I come to Alaska for the two months of heli ski season every year and rent a car for the whole time period. I've used a few of the different rental companies. I usually drive away feeling a little unhappy. First thing I learned : do not rent from the airport, there is a substantial additional fee. AVIS on B st took very good care of me two years in a row. The manager, Daniel really affected my trip in a positive way. He gave me the best vehicle for the best price and was really nice about it. The worst rental car place ever. I made a reservation and bought an insurance from Allianz global assistance. When I came in they did not allow me to rent a car. They said my drivers license alaskan and I have to buy an insurance through Progressive or any other company in Alaska. Seriously???? It was Sunday, 9 am. All Insurance company are closed in Sundays. They also did not allow me to buy an insurance through them . I've been rented a cars hundreds of time. This absurd first time in my life ever. I told them I used to live in Alaska but I live in NY now. After that they allowed me to rent a car with insurance purchased from Avis. But... she billed me $550. My online reservation was $128. She was trying to sell me an insurance for $422. It's a triple car rental price. This price is insane. Furthermore, if I had not said that I do not live in Alaska, they would not have been allowed to rent a car even for this inadequate price. read more

Avis you've almost single handedly ruined my vacation. The girlfriend reserved a car and first of all when we had gotten here you guys had no record of the request we have made. Second you guys require a credit card...not a debit card. Looking at terms and conditions online it doesn't say so anywhere. Looking at other posts I'm reading if you don't have a credit card, you can use a debit card but they'll be a hold for a high amount...SIR YOU DIDNT EVEN GIVE US THIS OPTION. You plain and simply looked at us and said sorry that's policy. So we had to walk 10 blocks with our luggage to enterprise to a place that actually wanted our money. Don't walk away, RUN!! Twice this year we've rented from the Anchorage AirportAvis location and both times we were surprised by the horrible customer service and staff attitudes. We've learned our lesson - don't go back!! While their cars are clean, you can get better service and not the attitude by simply walking next door! We've rented from Avis at other locations, and it was fine. Alaska Residents, beware: you must have a copy of your car insurance in-hand, or they won't rent to you. This has not been a requirement of other locations, nor at other car rentals that we've experienced. While we were able to produce the card each time, the way the staff handles this policy - could be a textbook case of what NOT to do! (BTW, we were told the reason its a policy is because AK has such a high percent of uninsured drivers. We went home and researched this issue and found that Alaska is about tin the middle of all 50 states when it comes to uninsured drivers. Maybe the company just doesn't want to rent to Alaskans?) read more

Rented a compact car for tooting around town for a month...total cost $487 on Hotwire. When we arrived we had an additional monthly rental discount dropping the total price to $407. We got a little 2016 Ford Focus that very clean. The attendant was very friendly and very accommodating. She also gave us a great tip on car rental insurance. I'd surely rent again here, especially that the rates will drop again next month (December). Best rates in town! Excellent customer service! read more

This review pertains to the Avis Anchorage Airport location. I received a letter today from the Avis Alaska Vehicle Claims Department along with an invoice suggesting that I am responsible for a small crack in the bumper of a car I returned for my business. However, I was never involved in an accident in that vehicle and I never saw that crack on the car. As an Avis Preferred Member, I did not inspect the vehicle with an agent prior to taking possession of the vehicle. However, even though I have a corporate account with Avis, I was required to execute paperwork prior to taking the keys. According to that paperwork, I was only required to report damage larger than a silver dollar (1 1/2" x 1 1/2"), but the photograph I received regarding this claim shows a small crack in the bumper that is smaller than that size. In any event: 1) I never saw this crack; 2) I did not cause it, and 3) I should not be responsible for $1090.60 in "damage" that allegedly required 10.4 hours of labor to repair. I have conducted some preliminary research on Yelp and I am concerned that other customers have alleged poor customer service and even fraud against Avis customers at this location. I have been using Avis for business for several years and this is the first bad experience I have had. Do yourself a favor and avoid the Avis at the Anchorage Airport. read more

I will never rent from these people again. I made a reservation a week in advance and got text up dates to my phone. When I got here the day of no car of the type I rented (the smallest Econo) was ready. The lady had to go to another lot and deice and get the snow of a car. By time everyone behind me got their check in and car I was still left waiting for mine. After a day in Anchorage I turned it in right before 4. I have now been sitting in the shuttle for half an hour. They will not leave until everyone is here. So now I am wasting my time waiting on someone else. My husband is part of the flight crew and we hoped to get back to the plane a little early to start the heaters. Nope we are just siting here. I will be renting from Enterprise from now on the slight savings with Avis hasn't been worth the hassle read more

Rented a car for two weeks and was told I could return the car after they closed using their drop box. I wasn't told that I would be charged an extra $121.00 if I returned the car after 3 pm. In addition they rented me a car that was dirty and shook violently when exceeding 25mph. After many phone calls they agreed to refund me for the day I was charged. That credit never showed up and they were unwilling to do anything regarding the car that was in disrepair. I was also charged for insurance I didn't want or need. Bottom line is that this particular Avis was dishonest. I will never rent from Avis again....Actually said they would give me a credit that never happens read more

Got a shiny brand new car for three days. The reason for this five star rating is mainly because of one employee's extraordinary service minded work during for them an hectic hour. When we returned our car we had to wait for about 40 minutes since we were not all alone doing that. However, Ryan took super professional care of us in a service manner which you seldom see. The kind of service where you see that the employee's actually caring for his job and his business' brand. Thanks Ryan for making the last day in Anchorage a such good memory! I was treated terrible by people in the office and over the phone. They did not honor my original agreement when I got into the office and decided to charge me double the agreed price. This is my second time attempting to rent a car at the Anchorage airport from Avis. The first time I did it online, I received confirmations, and I thought I was okay. I get there and apparently they discriminate against you if you live in Anchorage. If you live here they demand that you prove you are insured. You can live anywhere else and they don't care. I vowed to never rent from them again. It had been almost a year and I have my car insurance app on my phone. They were $9/day less than anyone else. I thought I would give them a try. I get to the counter, and I show them my app. My app only shows I have insurance if I have paid for that insurance. I had two fully insured cars with the rental coverage showing. They still wouldn't rent the car. I had to email what the app showed to them. Naturally, the app doesn't have that feature. The only thing that would appease these people would be if I had the paper card. Since I work away from home for long periods, this is not a possibility. My agent would have been happy to email my insurance info to them, but they are not worth my time. I will never rent from Avis anywhere in the country as a result. read more

You DO NOT want to rent from any of the Avis branches in Alaska. They make a physical copy of your credit card. They send the carbon copy of your card to their Anchorage branch where it is supposedly used to verify they are charging the correct card for the rental. That is asinine - they get both the drivers license and credit card info at the beginning of the rental. That is when they should be verifying the "correct" card is being used for the rental. No other rental car company in Alaska does this. Why am I telling you this - my credit card was compromised twice - shortly after an Avis rental and Visa security agrees this is likely the cause of the breach. read more

Yes, it was as good as it gets. I reserved a compact car a month or so before I arrived on a cruise ship, when I got to the Avis downtown agency my car was waiting for me and in minutes I was on my way. We drove to Seward and other places. When I returned the car in I was greeted by a friendly hostess and within minutes had the car turned in. The cost was as quoted and no hassles. Do not use Avis Alaska! They will scam you. False repair charges as well as inflated costs. Their appeal process is a joke. They are the ones scamming you, but they also decide if their charges are valid or not. I will never use Avis Alaska again. I had a reservation and when I arrived was told the amount agreed to and the car agreed to was a mistake that I would pay for with higher rate for smaller car. Then when I spoke with another manager he was smug and arrogant and unapologetic and implied that my business was irrelevant because I had not rented from them before. During the 2014 Christmas holiday I rented a vehicle with Avis. The vehicle they provided was more than adequate and the charges were posted immediately to my credit card. I rented the vehicle for 8 days (I opted out of any special programs) and I returned with with no hassle. I made sure that everything was paid and square before leaving the renal agency. Within a month I started receiving a bill for "unpaid amounts" on the rental. When I called them about this it turns out that it was a charge for an extra hour or rental time. You notice above where I said I made sure that the account was paid in full? Apparently it wasn't. You see I rented the vehicle (according to their system) at precisely 7:39 AM. I returned the vehicle at precisely (again according to their system which I am doubting at this point) at 8:59 Am 8 days later. Now the very nice lady on the other end of the phone explained that there is a one hour "grace" period in which to return the vehicle, which means I was 20 minutes over (again according to their system). I was never told about an hourly charge when renting the vehicle, I wasn't told about it when returning the vehicle and I certainly wasn't able to easily find anywhere on the paperwork where it said I had to return it within an hour of the rental time otherwise additional charges would be incurred (I did find a place on the paperwork where it lists the return by time as 15:59pm). This is a shady practice, they are liars and cheats, they WILL NOT tell you the truth about their billing practices until it is too late. DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS. This has also been reported to the BBB and the Alaska Chamber of Commerce. read more

Had an excellent experience renting from Avis. They had the exact kind of car I requested available at the time I requested. It was also a clean car. This is surprisingly difficult for many car rental companies. But that's just good business. The above and beyond was in the customer care. Not only were they friendly and helpful--again, good business--but one of the agents did me a great service. We accidentally left our garage opener in the car. Dropped off the car around noon; I called them about 3pm explaining what happened. We were flying out of state the next day to move and had no car. I asked if they could mail it to our new home, and the agent (Sarah? This is why I should review right after: to not forget important details) kindly offered to drop it off at our house after her shift ended, saving us a lot of hassle and finagling to get the opener back to its proper place. This was excellent service, and we really appreciated it. This, on top of the fact that they were the most affordable rate for Alaskan summer rental (a time when it's hard to find any rental inventory much less for a decent price) made me a very happy customer. read more

This is small Avis location staffed by a few people. The staff isn't particularly friendly and made me feel like I was imposing on their time. They also boxed me in so that I could not leave the lot right away while they were prepping other cars. Later, the oil change light lit up on the car that they gave me and I had to return it. Since they didn't have any more cars at this location, they made me drive to the airport instead to exchange the car. At first they were going to charge me the gasoline fill up fee since I didn't bring it back fully fueled. I complained to the manager since they were the ones making me take time from my vacation to drive from one location to another to swap out their car. He eventually agreed and didn't charge the fuel fee. Even the return process wasn't hassle free. Given the great experience that I had with the Avis in Fairbanks, I was very surprised by the difficulties that I had at Avis in Anchorage. read more

Somehow it was contracted til the 17th only. They ended up charging us another $500.00+ dollars and told us too bad, Shoulda read the agreement. Horrible experience. I had booked my car several weeks before my pickup date. When I went to the counter, apparently there was a notation that my AWD was not valid. I called corporate and they insisted that it was valid. In the end, I was told that as local franchise, they have final say and corporate cannot really do anything. SO my advance booking rate of just over 300 dollars was now 613 (I was considered a walk-in customer, since local franchise owner decided that in summer season, he did not want to rent the car at such discounted price). Total bait and swiitch operation. I will never be using AVIS, since corporate essentially washed off their hand saying local owners can decide whatever they want regardless of what it says in advance booking. read more

I had the exact same experience as Michael M did in 7/2014. I rented in April of 2016 from Avis Anchorage Airport. Month later received a bill in mail for $ 1,500 for body damage repair. What a surprise!! I did not hit anything or involved in any kind of collision. . The receiving attendant at the airport said nothing about any damage. They sent me a copy of his report, completed after we left car, indicating paint chip on wheel well. That was also the only picture they provided to me. There was no mention of any other marks or damage on the report.The paint chip was smaller than the 1.5" X 1.5" damage they want reported before you leave the airport. I don't honestly know if the chip was there when I rented the car but if it was, it did not meet their requirement of body damage greater than a silver dollar and I would have not gone back to the office to report. It was not body damage, but a paint chip. Included in the repair was over $ 500 just for a front grill part so I asked for a picture showing the grill damage since that was the most expensive part of the repair, not the paint chip.. They could not provide anything else. I contested the claim, and they said, " The Board reviewed my request and this is a valid claim". Who is to say the damage was not done after I returned the car either by Avis employee or another car? Again, the receiving attendant said nothing about damage on our return of car. If there was damage to vehicle on return, the attendant has an obligation to make the renter aware of it on return so it can be identified and seen by the renter. I have filed a complaint with Avis Corporate, knowing the Anchorage Airport location is not a Corporate Avis business. I have rented vehicles from Avis over the last 20 years and this will be the last time I use them. read more

We picked up our car at the Anchorage Airport and it was as ordered. Aside from the usual dings, everything was great.............or so we thought. After driving a total of 12 miles from the Airport to our hotel, we noticed an unusual bulge in a tire. I called Avis and they said to take it to the downtown location, which was only a mile or so away. Hoping it wouldn't blow en route, we did so. When we arrived, the girl looked at the tank level and said it was 1/8 tank low. Well, if driving 12 miles (which she verified with the beginning and ending miles) ate up 1/8 tank of gas on a mid-size car, there is something seriously wrong. Although I pointed this discrepancy out to her, she still insisted on charging us $8 for a gallon of gas. This is adding insult to injury on our inconvenience with the rental in the first place. If this is the kind of customer service Avis provides, I will never rent from them again. What ever happened to their old slogan "we try harder"? read more
