I've lived in Anchorage, Alaska for 60 years I've driven on the ice and the snow since I was 14 Our cars broke down so I needed a rental I rented at RAV4 "or similar" on the Internet When I get down there, the car given to me some Subaru cross track I thought all Subarus four-wheel-drive it's not what I really wanted but I figured big four-wheel-drive. It would work. NOT! Worse car on ice on the planet. Within 10 minutes I've done two 360s going down international Airport Road I thought maybe it was me Later on, it did another 360 spinning out going down northern lights I got out and looked at the tires Summer tires no studs! WTF!!! I thought what the fuck!!! I have more experience than 99.9% of the drivers in Anchorage And I found this car virtually undrivable I managed to get back to Avis At the airport And returned it I was given a different car To find out that snow, tires and studs are an extra expense! Car was scratched by another person who left their insurance information. The damage cost $200 to fix. They charged loss of use and administrative fees which drove the cost up to over $600. They refuse to work with your insurance carrier or credit card company and go after you personally. They are not a part of Avis Corporation. They are privately owned. They will punish you if you don't purchase their insurance with extra fees and not working with your insurance company. They video your car before you leave. They are hard core and ruthless and will ONLY speak to or go after the customer. read more

Worst car rental experience of my 63 years. Rented from Avis Alaska not knowing they were a franchise not owned by Avis. I returned the pickup and when I checked out they took a picture of a chip in the windshield. 30 day after I returned it I recieved an e-mail saying there was a chip in the windsheild. I told them there was one when I picked it up and they said there was a second chip and that I would have to pay over $800 to replace it even though it was already damaged. Turned over to my credit card company and recieved an notice that Master Card had paid for it I still got e-mail from them saying it would be turned over a collection company. I wonder how many people they charged to replace that windshield? Wish I could give negative stars. read more

While traveling to Anchorage Alaska, there was no need to rent a car for the entire stay - we rented a car just for a single day in order to visit all of the attractions we wanted to see (Portage, botanical garden, etc ). We had reserved a car in advance, and upon our arrival at 8:00 a.m. the two gentlemen staffing the small Avis kiosk location were ready to help. The processed the paperwork, walked us just a few feet away to the car, did a thorough process to make sure there were no dings or dents, and sent us on our way as happy customers. They let us know that we could return the car either the next day, but most importantly they explained what our process would be if we return the car late that night after closing hours. Everything with the rental went perfectly! With a convenient location to the downtown area, friendly and efficient staff, and reasonable pricing this is a wonderful location to pick up a car for just a day or two. read more

BEWARE OF BAIT AND SWITCH!!! We have never been treated so poorly by a customer service representative. We reserved the "Manager's Special" which clearly defined a four door car that would fit our luggage and four passengers. When we got to the counter they said the managers special was an 18 passenger van! I kid you not! Who could imagine an 18 passenger van as a manger's special? At first we thought this must be some sort of joke, but it was not. They were serious! When we showed them the reservation that had perimeters around a manger's special, and it said it would be a four door four passenger car, they then incorrectly claimed that was a minimum only - their 18 passenger van was well within the perimeters of a manager's special. The woman at the counter then said "that's what you get for reserving the manger special" She said this to us! On top of it all we were paying a premium rate to even get the manager's special because it was peak tourist season. Next we walked to the counter at National Rental Car and got a small SUV for slightly more $ and much better customer service. DO NOT USE AVIS IN ACHORAGE! read more

We came Anchorage April 18 to the 29th to volunteer for an organization that provides free healthcare to people in need. While on the way to Fairbanks our defective sunroof glass blew out. we were on a paved 2 lane road with no other traffic. I verified this issue was rare but not uncommon. I called the Avis office and they did send another vehicle to us in Palmer. Avis said we were at fault and charged us for the sunroof. Several weeks later we also got billed for towing! Every time I challenged this, their people were rude and argumentative even though I have been an Avis Preferred member for over 20 years. I have always had good experience with Avis until this. I was told that this location was not part of corporate Avis but a privately owned franchise. I am advising the rest of my organization to steer clear of Avis Alaska. Always be sure you are dealing with the "real" Avis. read more

I joined just to post the review and warn other Avis preferred members. This is NOT an AVIS preferred location/site and they seem to be proud of that fact. More than 30 mins to get a car. They have no access to any "preferred" account info so stuck in mindless paperwork. This avis location is deceptive. Despite the avis logo, they are not really part of avis as they do not honor your avis preferred status, they do not expedite your checkout and they award ZERO points or frequent flyer miles for any rentals. This was very disappointing and please consider renting from other agencies that will award points. This was not indicated anywhere when I made my reservation on the avis website. They also did not have the full size car I reserved, I was "upgraded" to an SUV with significantly worse gas mileage, which I did not want but there were no other cars available. read more

I rented a car at Juneau Airport. The car was improperly impounded. I spoke with the manager as well as the front desk several times to let them know that them know that they had to pick the car up being legal owners. I live outside of Alaska. Almost a week later and the manager still is yet to call me. My company rents many cars in Alaska. We will be putting Avis of Alaska on a no contract list. I will be pursuing legal action with the Juneau location. Don't rent with this location. read more

Aisou was the only reason that we wouldn't leave a lower rating. This location seemed very unorganized which made our day in anchorage more hectic than it had to be. The prices were great which makes up for much of the trouble, but we waited for an extra half hour for the shuttle, and were given a car that hadn't been warmed up or scraped of ice. This meant that we needed to spend another 20-ish minutes getting the car warmed up and scraping ice so we could safely drive. Aisou (i'm hoping I am spelling his name right) was very helpful and reassuring during the whole thing. He was friendly and talkative and went above and beyond in so many ways (helping carry our bags, taking time to help scrape the ice, chatting with all customers in his shuttle and making everyone feel at home) I wish they would stay opened past 5:00pm read more

This is the worst Avis in Anchorage. You may get ripped off Brandee Zic is no longer the station's manager. She was an earth angel. Be advised MOST car rentals in Anchorage require a credit card NOT a debit card for rentals. If you use your debit card be prepared to set aside $500 for a hold fee and you may not get it back when you turn in the car. It could be three days or up to three WEEKS before it reposts to your bank. Don't go here! If you do; get a signed copy of the vehicle check-out /damage sheet when you return the car. I had a reservation through Priceline for $600. My flight went late and we got in after they closed so we had to pick it up the next morning. I called the number on the reservation and spoke with an agent to let them know. The agent said it was fine and just to give then the flight number in the morning. When I arrived, the agent at the location said I called Avis corporate and they are not part of corporate. She went on to tell me they would only give me an upgraded vehicle which she and the manager went into the back to discuss (how much can make off this woman and her 2 kids stuck without transportation far from home?). The difference between Michael's experience and my own are as follows: 1. I requested that the parking lot attendant leave her warm and cozy booth to look at the damage that I found and listed on my sign-out sheet. She reluctantly came out and looked at the sides and front of the vehicle and stated, "This is Alaska. We are only interested in large damages." Then she refused to sign my sheet. 2. Avoid this company like the plague! They are truly a scam. Now you have two of us a few years apart who have been victims of fraud. Below is Michael B.'s Review: This review pertains to the Avis Anchorage Airport location. I received a letter today from the Avis Alaska Vehicle Claims Department along with an invoice suggesting that I am responsible for a small crack in the bumper of a car I returned for my business. However, I was never involved in an accident in that vehicle and I never saw that crack on the car. As an Avis Preferred Member, I did not inspect the vehicle with an agent prior to taking possession of the vehicle. However, even though I have a corporate account with Avis, I was required to execute paperwork prior to taking the keys. According to that paperwork, I was only required to report damage larger than a silver dollar (1 1/2" x 1 1/2"), but the photograph I received regarding this claim shows a small crack in the bumper that is smaller than that size. In any event: 1) I never saw this crack; 2) I did not cause it, and 3) I should not be responsible for $1090.60 in "damage" that allegedly requiredThe 10.4 hours of labor to repair. I have conducted some preliminary research on Yelp and I am concerned that other customers have alleged poor customer service and even fraud against Avis customers at this location. Good afternoon, I am writing about a rental situation I had at one of the Anchorage locations. We rented a vehicle for 2 days. The return time was 12pm and we returned it just after 1:30 which was late. The issue is I had multiple calls in the morning to this location and the manager at the airport about the return that we were running behind and could we make the return in Kenai. I was told no, that the vehicle was already rented that afternoon at the original pickup location. Not what I was hoping but understandable of course, so we made it back as fast as possible so the next renters would have the vehicle. Upon arrival the gentleman at the desk said very little and proceeded to inspect the vehicle, returning to the office without saying anything. I went in to ask if everything checked out and he simply gave me a thumbs up and asked if I wanted the receipt emailed.  I responded that was fine. I asked again if everything was OK and he responded yes, fine. In the parking lot waiting for our ride I noticed on my phone the email receipt had charged us for an extra day. I went in to discuss the situation and was told because we were late we were charged an extra day. This had not been mentioned in any previous exchange. Even if that is policy, he made no mention of it. I was told he "assumed someone had told me previously". Not the case. I said we would take the vehicle for the additional day and was told he had already checked me out and that was not an option. It is clear to me now he knew exactly what was going on. The vehicle was rented again to someone else, thus billing the vehicle for 2 days in one day. We would have just kept it another day and saved the 6 hour drive but did not want someone else to be without the vehicle. This was a very underhanded and shady way of dealing with the situation. I understand this is a privately owned location and not Avis Corporate.  Looking at the reviews for this location it sure seems like they make a practice of things like this. I would like to help ensure other folks can avoid falling into this same trap or others mentioned by previous reviewers. read more

Terrible, rent from anybody else, period. I reserved a car through the FBO (private aircraft side) at Anchorage using my WIzard number, which has our corporate code attached to it. Once I arrived, I had to fill out the rental agreement as I was told they did not take Avis numbers at that location. Little did I know that I was getting a Toyota 4 Runner for nearly $400 a day. Apparently Avis Alaska didn't bother to tell the FBO this either. When the FBO called after our arrival trying to find out what the deal was with our Avis number and corporate rate, they were put on hold. After 20 minutes I just told the nice girl at the FBO to just hang-up. Later I inquired with them, I was told that had I made the reservation on the Avis website, that we would have gotten our rate....but wait, I thought you weren't Avis. Now they won't adjust it to what it should be. My company rents hundreds of cars per day from Avis and this is how we get treated. I hate to see how they treat the average renter. Seriously, go anywhere else and if they are sold out, do yourself a favor and take Uber or walk. read more

Painful and slow service at checkout counter in Anchorage airport. Beware, they will go after you as much as possible for any damage they can find. I got a flat tire doing my rental in May. When I returned the car, after changing the flat myself, on site personnel said I would not be responsible as there was no apparent damage, the tire failed. I was traveling alone this week to Anchorage for a medical appointment. I had to take some antihistamines that make me very drowsy for this appointment. My plan was to drop the car off before I had to take the meds for my appointment that afternoon, and use Lyft for the rest of the day. When I was speaking to the shuttle driver about this, he offered to shuttle me to the hospital instead of me having to spend more money. This was much appreciated and unexpected, plus the friendliness of the all the employees can't be beat! Thank you Avis for going above and beyond!! Avis Anchorage is the reason I just cancelled my Avis First Business Class account. Not just stopped using them, but felt so uncomfortable with Avis that I needed to close out my entire relationship with them. I've even had my corporate credit card reissued. A month after I rented a vehicle from them, they permitted a rogue towing company to slam my account with a bogus $120.00 charge. Repeated attempts to rectify the situation have been met with, alternatively, rudeness and silence. Stay away from these con artists and horrible people. read more

Just wanted to share that they screwed up my reservations to begin with When I got to the counter the young gal informed me I needed to pick the car up in town. I showed her my reservation confirmation showing it was an airport pickup and she showed me her computer screen showing it was downtown pickup. After a couple go rounds she fixed it and I took the car. She seemed annoyed that I was taking up her time even though there was no one else around. The car they gave me for my two weeks in the area was upgraded (as it should be- hello, 5 star gold member!), and it was pretty brand new This is a three star BECAUSE...it absolutely sucks that they do not honor any rewards programs aside from Alaska Airlines. I don't ever fly that airlines (and I prefer not to anyway). They don't honor Avis points, US Airways points or discounts despite being a partner...or even Hawaiian Airlines. The branch/sales manager, Chris, really helped us out when the vehicle we had rented was readily available. He and his staff were friendly, helpful and very customer-service oriented. Side note: Unbeknownst to me, I accidently left my expensive Maui Jim sunglasses in our rental car (I assumed they were swiped at the airport). We received a call from Michel, the Support Service Manager, letting us know that she had my sunglasses and wanted to get them returned ASAP. I modified my reservation a few days in advance and when I call to confirm the day of that my vehicle is ready, I was told that they wouldn't have mine available for another 12 hrs! We were getting dropped off at the airport because we wouldn't have transportation the next few days. Can you imagine how depressing it is to have to sit in an airport for 12 hrs, wasting an ENTIRE day of our vacation. To add insult to injury, I spoke to the customer service supervisor, who transferred me to reservations, who said they couldn't do anything and told me to contact customer service for assistance. I must have been lucky when I came in here because I had excellent service. I made a reservation online and showed up at the car rental center to pick up the two SUVs I had rented. Both SUVs were parked in the front already warmed up and ready to go. It only took a few minutes to complete the paperwork and head out the door with the keys. Easy and convenient. read more
