Any reasonable company would offer compensation for a significant delay like this, but Avianca claimed this was not eligible as the reason for the delay was "weather". After a thorough review - I literally searched every other flight leaving Bogota the day of our flight (as our flight was coming from BOG to JFK), and not a single one was delayed due to weather. So Avianca lied to us to deny compensation. After much arguing, they agreed to provide a hotel voucher so we could get some rest, which was needed as Avianca's planes are incredibly uncomfortable, and that we'd just need to speak with a supervisor in Bogota as soon as we got off the plane. Needless to say - there was no supervisor there, and every employee acted confused, explained they couldn't speak English, and told us to talk to someone else. We ended up only arriving 26 minutes late to Bogota, so we got to our gate with an hour to spare before the departure time where the employees told us there was no possibility we could get on the plane and summarily dismissed us. The employees (of which I spoke to many) have zero customer service skills - they lie, deflect, and ignore and get defensive when asked direct questions. One woman (Edna Bocanegra) actually admitted that they are all liars and then when we asked for her name, attempted to hide her name tag and run away and was incredibly rude with us. Beware, Avianca will randomly change your flight without you agreeing to it. I booked a flight for May 12 and they did not notify me that it had changed to the 11th. I did not receive an email a phone call, nothing. It wasn't until the 11th when I I was having issues with the check in (for my flight which was supposed to be the 12th) and saw it had the wrong date on it, surely it must be a mistake since I was never notified. So I spoke to an Avianca representative at the airport (cause that morning I was flying out from Medellin to Cartagena) and they confirmed that my flight was indeed leaving the 11th (that same day). While at the airport, I called for assistance and the first representative was very helpful she immediately tried to find a new flight for me and calmed me that this would be resolved with ease since I told her I had purchased the flight insurance (during this call I learned of the many flight times that were available for the next day, so switching me to a new flight could have been seamless). Unfortunately I was mid travel and boarding a different flight at this moment that the phone call was cut off. I called again once I arrived at my hotel and the next representative was a so unhelpful. He was rude in his tone and did not have a sense of urgency at all, when I am supposed to be flying out the next morning. After being on the phone for almost 1 hour he said they will open up an investigation and call be back before the end of day with a resolution. They never called me back, I slept with anxiety of being stuck at a country with no accommodation, losing money on the already booked accommodation in Santiago and not getting refunded for the flight even with the flight insurance. This situation full of uncertainty ruined my last night of my trip in Colombia. I woke up early the next day to call Avianca and demand that they resolve this issues and NOT HANG UP AGAIN since they kept saying "we will look into it and get back to you." I had already had 2 phone calls, both 1 hour long where we reached no resolution. I was adamant they resolve this issue and at this point I was desperate to get on a flight, I had already paid an extra night at the hotel (money lost) and lost my original flight, the Avianca rep said they would not be able to refund me or give me credits and I had to repurchase another $300 flight to Santiago. Worst airline ever! We purchased a direct flight. Months later, they changed the flight to have a layover in a different country and lengthened the travel time by 3 fold. That was unacceptable to us. They would not refund us. Their website wouldn't work for refunds (isn't THAT convenient), so called all of their customer service numbers which just directed us to WhatsApp and answered only by AI, and that told us to use the website...the non-working website. It's the worst company ever! 1. Horrible costumer service in person. Over the phone not so much, but you need luck for someone to answer you (or you can wait on the line for more than 2 hours). 2. No service on board. Not a single glass of water even for a 6hrs flight. 3. Horrible seats. Don't waste your money with a seat upgrade. The seats are all the same, the difference is that on PLUS you get a head rest. 4. Horrible customer service in person. In Brazil and Colombia, we had terrible interaction with personal. They are extremely rude. They will not listen to your explanation or reason. They will simply do whatever they want. (In our case: We were flying in 4 and had 4 carry ones. They asked us to check 2 bags. I tried to explain that I had medication and clothes for my 3-year-old, also valuable items on the carry on. They completely ignored me and just answered "You need to check 2 bags and you cannot have 4". They didn't even look at your face when you are talking - I am pretty sure they were not even listening. I tried to explain for the second time and the woman started raising her voice to us. So, my only option was to accept and give them 2 of my carry on and hope nothing would get stolen. 5. They require a return flight. Despite the fact that there's no information on their website or a warning when buy a one-way ticket. If you don't buy a return flight you won't be allowed to board. They claim that is a U.S. requirement and that every airline company does it which is incorrect because my family (citizens and tourist visa holders) had come to the U.S. multiple times with a one-way ticket and never had an issue. (In our case: we arrived at the Sao Paulo airport with check-in ready and their manager would not let us board or check our luggage because my mom (tourist visa holder) would not have her return ticket. The manager was very rude, disrespectful and impatient. We were trying to understand the reason for the requirement and where was the information on the website, but he was super arrogant and basically Telling us that "we were in his hands", and he would not let us board without the ticket. He even put a note on our reservation. So, we had to buy a return ticket in front of him. We didn't buy Avianca of course which made him even more upset. I was honestly afraid he would do something with our reservation!) I don't recommend Avianca. I know it can be cheaper but it's not worth it! You can't trust or rely on them. let me just start this airline is full with thieves... I made a change on my flight everything was confirmed, I got a confirmation email, it was reflecting on the app everything was great. I show up to the airport and they couldn't find me in the system. I called costumer service and they told me they didnt know why it happened they didn't offer me a new flight I had to pay 1400 for a new flight when I originally had paid 345$ which I bought the flex one and now they're telling me I can't even get a refund ?!?! they do this on purpose to get money out of people ! it happens to me last year with my luggage when I paid almost $150 dollars for luggage and it was not showing up on their system I had to pay more at the airport! this airline has to get SHUT DOWN! they don't take accountability for their mistakes and they gaslight the costumer!
