Please do not use this airline. We had just had the worst traveling in 50 years! And they are not even cheap!!!! Imagine a flight from Argentina to Florida seating on a tiny seat that DO NOT RECLINE with the rudest flight attendants that only serve you water, juice or bad coffee ONCE and a snack sized for a 2 year old. And pay attention all the bots and fake profiles they are using to elevate their online rating. read more

Pooly trained staff. Not a single person that "attempted" to assist with with my check in had sufficient knowledge of the appropriate documentation required for returning to US with my dog. I guided them to the CDC & USDA sites on-line and showed them my certified original documents currently required as specified on each site. The refused my documents because "they are not the form the were told to accept". I was shown a copy of the form they required and it is an outdated form from 2025. My Vet certified & US government approved documents are all 2026 form. Even worse than Avianca staff refusing to accept my valid travel documents was the fact that they carelessly gave me copy of the form they require and it was not a blank for, rather it was a completed form with data for a total stranger. Total breach of privacy! Shame on you Avianca! read more

My first and last experience flying with Avianca Airlines was a complete disaster. I flew internationally from Dulles International Airport to Colombia, and for a 5 1/2-hour flight, the only service provided was basic beverages and a cheese and meat sandwich that tasted like it had been sitting for days. There were no entertainment screens on the plane, which made the flight even more uncomfortable. Upon arriving in Bogotá, immigration lines were so long that it took nearly 3 hours to get through, causing hundreds of passengers including myself to miss connecting flights. Customer service was extremely disappointing. They placed many of us in a hotel overnight and issued standby tickets for the next day. Unfortunately, the return trip was just as bad. My flights were delayed without explanation and there was no bad weather involved. I missed my connection again, had to stay another night in Bogotá, pay out of pocket for hotel transportation, and was once again given a standby ticket. I will never fly internationally with Avianca again. For local travel, maybe. But for international flights, I strongly recommend choosing another airline unless you're prepared for delays, cancellations, and major headaches. read more

Very disappointing experience with Avianca. The connections were ridiculously long--one of mine was almost eight hours, something I unfortunately didn't notice when booking, but it made an already exhausting trip even worse. The seats did not recline and were so cramped that, even though I'm only 5'3", my knees were pressed against the seat in front of me the entire flight. The passenger next to me had to sit sideways for most of the trip because there simply wasn't enough legroom. On a flight lasting over six hours, no food was provided, and I was only offered a single cup of water. To make matters worse, the fee for an overweight bag was only about $20 less than the cost of checking an entirely new bag, which is a ridiculous pricing policy. Overall, the lack of comfort, poor service, and excessive fees made for a terrible travel experience. I will never choose Avianca again and would not recommend it based on this experience. read more

Check Truspilot. I lost a day of travelling to a new country because they didn't inform me my gate changed and couldn't tell me why. Do not use them. read more

Heads up to fellow travelers using Avianca at Dulles (IAD) -- had quite an experience today at the check-in counter. The agent tried to charge me for my carry-on bag, which is explicitly included in my fare. When I politely declined, she became visibly irate and difficult. What made it worse? She muttered under her breath "What? This man?" -- completely unprofessional and, frankly, disrespectful. A manager had to be called over, who confirmed I was 100% correct and did not have to pay anything. Know your rights before you fly! Avianca's own boarding pass clearly shows carry-on is included. I had one of the worst travel experiences with Avianca Airlines. Due to what appears to be their internal reservation error, my flight details were incorrect. I had previously called to confirm my departure time and was reassured everything was correct. Despite that, I later received a call from the airport saying my flight was about to depart -- at a time that did not match what I had been told. Because of this mistake, I was marked as a "no-show," and they automatically canceled my return flight. I was then forced to purchase two brand-new round-trip tickets, one for me and one for my daughter even though the issue stemmed from misinformation provided by their own representative. The most frustrating part? On our return trip, when I checked in, the system had us under the "automatically canceled" reservation -- the same one they told me I could not use. When I explained that I had already been forced to buy new tickets because of their error, the representative simply said it wasn't their fault and that if I wanted to board the earlier flight (which was five hours before the one they claimed was canceled), I would have to purchase yet another ticket. This experience felt extremely unfair and unprofessional. Instead of taking responsibility for their mistake, they repeatedly pushed the financial burden onto us. It honestly felt like policies were being used to extract more money rather than to resolve the issue. Travelers should be very cautious when booking with Avianca. Double-check everything, document every call, and be prepared, because if something goes wrong, you may end up paying for their mistakes. If I could give a 0 star I would. read more

Flew Avianca for the first time on a recent trip from the US to Columbia. I will never fly this crappy airline again! The plane seats were the tightest I've ever seen in my life. Laughably tiny. My family spent the first 15 minutes on the plane literally laughing in disbelief at how cramped we all were. Literally nowhere to put your legs. I could smell the hair of the person sitting in front of me. On the 5 1/2 hour flight, they didn't bring us any food or water. That's right, not even water! Now that I'm back home, I'm being inundated with spam from them. I must have received 50 emails from this company since booking the tickets. The absolute worst. read more

This is the worst airline I've ever had to deal with - AVOID AT ALL COSTS Avianca delayed our initial flight by an hour, then after we had checked our bags, sent us an email telling us we had been re-booked for our connecting flight (originally 7am in Bogota) for a 4pm flight later that day arriving after midnight in Buenos Aires. Any reasonable company would offer compensation for a significant delay like this, but Avianca claimed this was not eligible as the reason for the delay was "weather". After a thorough review - I literally searched every other flight leaving Bogota the day of our flight (as our flight was coming from BOG to JFK), and not a single one was delayed due to weather. So Avianca lied to us to deny compensation. After much arguing, they agreed to provide a hotel voucher so we could get some rest, which was needed as Avianca's planes are incredibly uncomfortable, and that we'd just need to speak with a supervisor in Bogota as soon as we got off the plane. Needless to say - there was no supervisor there, and every employee acted confused, explained they couldn't speak English, and told us to talk to someone else. We ended up only arriving 26 minutes late to Bogota, so we got to our gate with an hour to spare before the departure time where the employees told us there was no possibility we could get on the plane and summarily dismissed us. The employees (of which I spoke to many) have zero customer service skills - they lie, deflect, and ignore and get defensive when asked direct questions. One woman (Edna Bocanegra) actually admitted that they are all liars and then when we asked for her name, attempted to hide her name tag and run away and was incredibly rude with us. She acted like she was a street thug and wanted to fight and gave us nasty looks. Avianca gave us the metaphorical middle finger even as we tried to be reasonable and speak with them. They lied to us, denied us boarding a plane we arrived to with a reasonable amount of time to board, and gave us half of a Subway sandwich as compensation for a 10 + hour delay. read more

They will change your itinerary constantly before your flight to a horrible schedule (my 6 hour flight from DC to Vancun via Miami changed yo DC to El Salvador to Cancun and took 10 hours). For all those who deign to flight this company, avoid at all costs. Below is my complaint email to Avianca after ALL flights (multiple planes, only on this carrier, were cancelled from Lima Airport. Other carriers flew out last night, despite Avianca Claiming it was a single aircraft issue, then claiming it was an airport wide issue). Dear Avianca: I am a US lawyer writing to express my deep disappointment and frustration regarding the recent cancellation of my flight, Flight Number: AV74/AV210 scheduled on June 3, from Lima, Peru to New York, JFK. The flight was inexplicably cancelled due to what the representative claimed were "external factors", causing significant inconvenience and unexpected costs to my travel plans. The story we got began: 1) there was a plane malfunction affecting our aircraft; followed by 2) there was an external factor at the airport itself affecting our flight. Whatever the reason, the shifting stories by your employees indicate to me a problematic lie to customers to avoid compensating them for the inconvenience. As a loyal customer, I had made all necessary arrangements and incurred various expenses in anticipation of this trip. The abrupt cancellation not only resulted in financial losses but also caused me considerable stress and inconvenience. I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, but it is the airline's responsibility to adequately compensate passengers for such disruptions. I kindly request compensation for the following: 1. **Full Refund of the Ticket Cost**: The amount paid for the cancelled flight. 2. **Reimbursement of Additional Expenses**: Costs incurred for accommodation, meals, and transportation due to the cancellation. Meals: $30 dinner 6/3 $30 meals 6/4 Tolls to and from airport: $10 6/3 $10 6/4 Gas to and from airport $40 one way 6/3 $40 one way 6/4 Unearned wages 6/4 (caused by travel interruption): $500 Hotel for the day of travel incurred by avianca: $50 All costs are in USD. 3. **Compensation for Inconvenience**: A gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience and stress caused by the cancellation. Avoid avianca!!!!!. I had been flying avianca for years, and I am Gold status frequent flyer, they cancelled my flight and gave me absolutely no compensation for terminal expenses and non refundable expenses. My next flight had to be 10 h + later than the original one. I needed 4 days at my final destination and I've gotten no help for this change. It's been a complete headache. read more

Beware, Avianca will randomly change your flight without you agreeing to it. I booked a flight for May 12 and they did not notify me that it had changed to the 11th. I did not receive an email a phone call, nothing. It wasn't until the 11th when I I was having issues with the check in (for my flight which was supposed to be the 12th) and saw it had the wrong date on it, surely it must be a mistake since I was never notified. So I spoke to an Avianca representative at the airport (cause that morning I was flying out from Medellin to Cartagena) and they confirmed that my flight was indeed leaving the 11th (that same day). While at the airport, I called for assistance and the first representative was very helpful she immediately tried to find a new flight for me and calmed me that this would be resolved with ease since I told her I had purchased the flight insurance (during this call I learned of the many flight times that were available for the next day, so switching me to a new flight could have been seamless). Unfortunately I was mid travel and boarding a different flight at this moment that the phone call was cut off. I called again once I arrived at my hotel and the next representative was a so unhelpful. He was rude in his tone and did not have a sense of urgency at all, when I am supposed to be flying out the next morning. After being on the phone for almost 1 hour he said they will open up an investigation and call be back before the end of day with a resolution. They never called me back, I slept with anxiety of being stuck at a country with no accommodation, losing money on the already booked accommodation in Santiago and not getting refunded for the flight even with the flight insurance. This situation full of uncertainty ruined my last night of my trip in Colombia. I woke up early the next day to call Avianca and demand that they resolve this issues and NOT HANG UP AGAIN since they kept saying "we will look into it and get back to you." I had already had 2 phone calls, both 1 hour long where we reached no resolution. I was adamant they resolve this issue and at this point I was desperate to get on a flight, I had already paid an extra night at the hotel (money lost) and lost my original flight, the Avianca rep said they would not be able to refund me or give me credits and I had to repurchase another $300 flight to Santiago. If I learned any lesson here is to fly LATAM in South America. The customer service with Avianca was trash and the experience was so upsetting read more

Worst airline ever! We purchased a direct flight. Months later, they changed the flight to have a layover in a different country and lengthened the travel time by 3 fold. That was unacceptable to us. They would not refund us. Their website wouldn't work for refunds (isn't THAT convenient), so called all of their customer service numbers which just directed us to WhatsApp and answered only by AI, and that told us to use the website...the non-working website. We emailed support, and they told us to use website even though I told them the website didn't work for refunds. SCAM airline. read more

It's the worst company ever! 1. Horrible costumer service in person. Over the phone not so much, but you need luck for someone to answer you (or you can wait on the line for more than 2 hours). 2. No service on board. Not a single glass of water even for a 6hrs flight. 3. Horrible seats. Don't waste your money with a seat upgrade. The seats are all the same, the difference is that on PLUS you get a head rest. 4. Horrible customer service in person. In Brazil and Colombia, we had terrible interaction with personal. They are extremely rude. They will not listen to your explanation or reason. They will simply do whatever they want. (In our case: We were flying in 4 and had 4 carry ones. They asked us to check 2 bags. I tried to explain that I had medication and clothes for my 3-year-old, also valuable items on the carry on. They completely ignored me and just answered "You need to check 2 bags and you cannot have 4". They didn't even look at your face when you are talking - I am pretty sure they were not even listening. I tried to explain for the second time and the woman started raising her voice to us. So, my only option was to accept and give them 2 of my carry on and hope nothing would get stolen. 5. They require a return flight. Despite the fact that there's no information on their website or a warning when buy a one-way ticket. If you don't buy a return flight you won't be allowed to board. They claim that is a U.S. requirement and that every airline company does it which is incorrect because my family (citizens and tourist visa holders) had come to the U.S. multiple times with a one-way ticket and never had an issue. (In our case: we arrived at the Sao Paulo airport with check-in ready and their manager would not let us board or check our luggage because my mom (tourist visa holder) would not have her return ticket. The manager was very rude, disrespectful and impatient. We were trying to understand the reason for the requirement and where was the information on the website, but he was super arrogant and basically Telling us that "we were in his hands", and he would not let us board without the ticket. This is the absolute worst Airlines I have ever dealt with. Do not use Google to search for their number, they have changed their phone number. The number that's listed points to it a scam agency trying to get your information. Be sure that you are talking to the Avianca airlines if you decide to use them. As for my experience, it was the absolute worst. I have been trying to get a refund for my luggage that they charge me twice, all I'm getting is the runaround. Also, on my flight to Bolivia the captain allowed his wife to come up in the front cabin and stay for four hours. This has to be illegal or against the rules. I flew business class, the food was a joke. I would absolutely stay away from this airlines. How they suck people in is they lower their prices. let me just start this airline is full with thieves... I made a change on my flight everything was confirmed, I got a confirmation email, it was reflecting on the app everything was great. I show up to the airport and they couldn't find me in the system. I called costumer service and they told me they didnt know why it happened they didn't offer me a new flight I had to pay 1400 for a new flight when I originally had paid 345$ which I bought the flex one and now they're telling me I can't even get a refund ?!?! they do this on purpose to get money out of people ! it happens to me last year with my luggage when I paid almost $150 dollars for luggage and it was not showing up on their system I had to pay more at the airport! this airline has to get SHUT DOWN! they don't take accountability for their mistakes and they gaslight the costumer! Terrible if i could give it zero stars i would, June 24 i had a flight booked that made a stop in Guatemala city to go to flores. I got off my flight at 4:30 in the city, My next flight was at 6. at 4:50 the Rude lady in red told me and my sister we were too late for our next flight ass the door closed at 5 it was 4:50, good customer service would've had us at the gates by 5. She was very rude calling us dumb and stupid for missing the flight when really they shouldn't have been allowed to let us book this flight knowing what time the plane would land and time needed to get to gate. We later had to wait until 7pm that day to fly to flores, ultimately ruining the plans we had for the first day. 10/10 DO NOT recommen, I am very disappointed with how i was treated i expected more from you guys. read more

Total rip off. They would not let us get on a flight because we were missing a vaccine document. I had refundable fare and was promised by the check in agent if I contacted their help desk within 10 days I would get a full refund. To this day Avianca says I should have done it there before the flight and refuses to refund $2572 except $104. I battled for 6 months with them stating I was working off their employees statement. Complete hectic, chaos at the check in counter of Dulles International Airport. My luggaege did not arrive at my final destination. I arrived Saturday afternoon and my luggage made it to the hotel Monday evening. Allow 3 hours to check in. Not a pleasant trip. I had 1 hour 45 minutes before my flight. The line moved so slow. Finally, after an hour, the lady at the counter checked me in and said run to your gate. Impossible to run because I still had to go through security and catch the shuttle train. I made it to the gate and I ran. After sitting on the plane for 35 minutes, they made an announcement that they were waiting for a mechanical part to start the engine, it was nothing serious, all very normal, and we would be departing within 15 minutes. After another 25 minutes, we departed. Honestly, all the captain had to say was they were doing pre flight checks and we would be leaving a little behind schedule. His announcement terrified us. Luckily, it was a smooth flight. Arrived sort behind schedule. Once we landed, they made the announcement to allow those with connecting flights to depart off the plane first so we could make the connection. In Brazil, they don't listen. The passengers did what they wanted to do and it was chaos getting off the plane. I had a connection and nobody would let me pass. There was yelling, pushing, along with the anxiety of trying to make the connecting flight. Made the connection. My luggage did not. 3 days later it arrived. What I don't like about Avianca, people did not seem very happy to have their job. Customer service was bare minimal or just satisfactory. I remember when boarding the flight, the stewardess' were so deep in chit chat with themselves, they were not really greeting or welcoming the passengers. Ughhh. They could improve in so many ways. read more

Imagine being in an unfamiliar country with no form of transportation, no family, nowhere to stay and your flight gets delayed because a bird accidentally flies into the engine. You're promised room accommodation over the intercom, but once you try to rebook your flight the attendant retracts the initial promise of a room. Again, no transportation, no family, and nowhere to stay. Each time we try to plead our cases we're told, "Well, it's not our fault the plane flew into the engine." This airline is the worst. The employees aren't compassionate. The airline simple doesn't care about its passengers. Avoid trying to take Avianca as much as possible! read more

Avianca gets 1 star because I can't give them zero stars. We bought a ticket for our son who is twelve years old to to fly from Colombia to the US on a direct flight to Dulles. He was visiting his grandparents for the summer. On their website they offered services for unaccompanied minors, but to our surprise when we called to schedule the service they said that they no longer offer that service for minors. When we did the check-in the night before they assigned him a seat in the last row of the plane. We upgraded his seat to first class thinking that at least he would have better attention. That did not happen!! At the gate they made him throw out a bottle of water that he bought after passing security. My son had to endure an entire flight of 6 hours without so much as a cup of water. They refused to give him anything because he did not have a credit card. I don't understand how people that are in a service industry be so inhumane with a kid that all he wanted was water. read more

Has to be the worst airline I have ever been on. We flew 5 hrs to Colombia and they didn't even offer us water. On the way back they damaged my daughters suitcase, to the point she needs a new one. Uncomfortable seats that don't recline. We flew first class and it was a waste of money. Only difference is the seat is wider nothing else, no other perks. read more

Good luck getting a human on the phone at Avianca. I was on hold for 45 minutes before I could speak to someone concerning a COVID test submission. The flight experience was also sub-par at best. I flew in business class, which is the same as coach, except fluffier seats. No in-flight entertainment on a 5 hour international flight. One cup of water and a questionable sandwich handed out at the beginning of the flight. Unless you are compelled to fly them for some reason, I wouldn't recommend. read more

I have had a very terrible experience many times flying with Avianca. Over the years my family has visited E.S over 30 times. Every single time there has been a problem, most of which is not enough for the situation to be listed as a problem. One time they had insulted a pregnant woman infront of our faces because of her carry on "not meeting specifications". Their customer service is absolutely horrendous. My family and I have had an encounter with them once and that is why we have stopped flying. 2 Female Flight Attendants were very rude to my family as they had verbally abused my mother. One of the female attendants started to record my mother with no permission. My family started to record these 2 ladies and as soon as they saw a camera infront of their face they had stopped using such vulgar language. The 2 Avianca Attendants had flipped over their badges to avoid confrontation straight to the airline. Please do not fly with this airline. read more

I wish it was possible to leave 0 stars. It's almost impossible to speak to anyone in customer service or receive any kind of help or response. I have been on hold for 6+ hours and still no answer. I have called on different days at different hours and have been on hold for a minimum of 2hrs and nothing. I have tried to create a voucher and when I try to check on the status of the voucher it is not found in the system. I drove about an hour to try and speak to the representatives at Dulles Airport and they were no help. All they said we could do is go to avianca.com or call. I understand we are in a pandemic but this is ridiculous. I do not recommend this airline to anyone. read more

The Dulles ground crew at check in changed my seat and said my original seat was broken. On the plane, a couple had the seats together so not sure how they fixed the seat on the old plane before take off. Flight crew does bare minimum and the quantity of the beverages they dispense is very small. They will not offer refills again. I would fly them again if the flight times were good and costs were low. Other routes might have the newer neo's then I would fly them with less hesitation.

I enjoyed trying a range of Austrian wines, and they were kind enough to give me a second entree. But the hard product - the seating - was lacking. I slept worse than I'd have slept in economy - the seat was hard and uncomfortable, and the temperature in the cabin was swelteringly high. The short haul Schengen flight from Vienna to Athens was pretty standard, and is often the case with intra-EU flights, the "business class" was just economy seats at the front of the plane with the middle seats blocked - no extra legroom or roomier seating. Again, the food was delicious, I was surprised at the quality (and quantity) of the meal on such a short flight. I'd definitely avoid Austrian on a transcontinenal flight in the future. In fact, my return flight was originalluy on Austrian, but I changed to United. Say what you will about UA, but the international Polaris Business class is still one of the best transcon options until you get into First Class territory.

So we go to their customer service and get the tickets, come back in line and AGAIN we're told wait somewhere else until another 30mins to get in line for boarding. So we couldn't even sit down by the gate cause they had it blocked off and only let a few in. Wait what??!! So we board and no air vents for individual air flow. I thought I was going to passed out from being hot. As for the meal? You get what they have! No choice!!! It was more Vegetarian than anything. So if you fly with them or connect with them through United, now you know.

It's actually been a long time since I have flown through (or to) Washington DC and gone to any…read moreairport in the DC area. I recently had a layover at DCA when traveling from Phoenix to Toronto on American Airlines. I enjoyed the layover and found the airport, its staff, and the airline lounges all to be very convenient and helpful. I learned on this visit though that locals and frequent flyers typically call it "National" or "DCA" while out-of-town visitors call it "Reagan." I used all three interchangeably so I'm not sure what that means for me. The clubs and lounges in DCA Airport are much better than usual and there are more of them than usual. I have two travel premium credit cards: the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard offering complimentary Admirals Club access (including the locations near gates C24 and in concourses B and E) and the American Express Platinum card offering other lounge access (including the Centurion Lounge near the B gates and the Delta Sky Club near B15 if I was flying Delta). Other lounges include the United Club near B11 and the Capital One Landing in the main connector area. The Admirals Club near the E gates was incredible and a newly reimagined lounge. My AMEX Platinum also provides travel credits along with complimentary CLEAR and Global Entry membership. There is also the USO Center in Terminal 1. The DCA airport's website (https://www.flyreagan.com) shows ways to enhance your trip or even how to make the most of your summer with a summer travel guide. There are 87 shops and restaurants in the airport with new ones always being added. If you're going to be parking at DCA often, sign up for their PassPark Rewards program (https://parking.flyreagan.com/passpark-rewards). Airport amenities in addition to airport lounges include charging stations, free WiFI, a concierge, baggage carts, and interfaith chapel, kids play space, nursing rooms, pet relief areas, and more. It really does feel that the airport staff put a lot of intentional effort into making sure everyone feels welcome and that there's something at the airport for everyone. I certainly won't mind a layover at DCA in the future!
