Walk into Avec55 and after first being impressed and charmed by the décor, you will then mesmerised by the superlative food. A small restaurant, its interior is informally modern in style with a few eclectic adornments scattered here and then to give it a more warmly personal touch. The great attention to detail can be seen in the careful, stylish manner in which the tables (all of which are at a decent distance from one another) are laid.
And then there is food, which both mirrors and surpasses the setting. A small menu that caters to meat, fish and vegetarians alike, with each dish - be it antipasti, primi, secondi or dessert - elegantly displayed on the plate with a masterly, painterly eye. As for the taste: the combination of fresh quality ingredients in each dish, and the balanced proportion in which they are used (the secret of all good cooking), allows each its place, together creating a light, balanced, delicate explosion of flavour on the tongue. Like the food, the wine list too is small, discerning, and reasonably priced It is hard to pick out one or two outstanding dishes ( we ate there twice, during our brief visit to Tivoli) as the menu changes seasonally, and depends on with what is on offer that day, but the tuna tartare, among the antipasti, the sea food risotto, and the swordfish stand out in particular. As for the desserts just take your pick. The service is kind, friendly, extremely helpful and unobtrusive. To cap it all ,these culinary riches are offered at a price, which is beyond reasonable.
Haute cuisine in a relaxed setting, in any big city, Rome, Milan, London, people would be queuing up for a reservation at this extraordinarily talented chef's restaurant. As it is, a visit to Avec 55 is a must if you are in Tivoli, and well worth the trip if you are within driving distance of it (and that includes Rome). We certainly hope to return. read more
