Ahhh, Vortex. First, a couple of disclaimers:…read more 1. I'm not a musician/client myself so this review is from a layperson's standpoint. 2. I've only been to two or three recording/rehearsal studios in the area, so I'm not well versed in these types of businesses. Vortex is pretty awesome. Sure, there's no heat outside the individual rooms and as far as I know, you have to have your own heaters in the rehearsal rooms themselves, but there are a couple of areas to sit and relax - couches and a vending machine - so all in all, it's a pretty cool place. Add in the fact that there are restrooms WITH toilet paper, running water, paper towels and hell, even magazines, and you're looking at one of the better rehearsal spaces in the area (from a hangout standpoint, at least). Rent seems extremely reasonable and on par with other rehearsal rooms (for example, Studio 7, with which I'm intimately familiar and which doesn't hold a candle to Vortex). Everyone is friendly too, so another plus. Definitely a good place to hang out on practice night.

The amount of inappropriate and judgemental comments was ridiculous. After doing a few songs, he sent me the worst versions/takes, raw. When I asked "ok, so I have these recordings, now how do I get them finished?" He says "oh I don't know. I don't do that." So I just wasted some hours in this guy's basement while he insulted my personal life with conspiracies, and all I got was really raw crappy takes of songs that I could have easily done on my phone and no recommendation on how to move forward with the material that we did record.

They wanted a down payment to book some time which is totally cool. I was ready to use my debit card. I even said I would come hand deliver CASH to him to book the studio time since he said he didn't accept debit. Which if you ask me is weird, it's 2021, who doesn't accept debit or credit as a form of payment. He insisted I use Venmo, Cash app or Paypal. I told him I didn't have any of those. I asked if he would send me the studio address. He declined to do so, he just kept asking for the down payment. Setting up an account on Venmo, Cash app or Paypal requires you to input your bank account information. I looked into it, but it takes up to a week to have your bank account information verified for use. I told him this, but he wasn't buying it. I'm not sure if he thought I was lying to him.... He seems like a good guy. But I wouldn't trust it. Literally, I asked like 12 times if I could just drop off cash to him directly. He only wanted a form of payment that was via an app. I've never met this guy and he wants me to input my SSN into an app for him. Hmmmmmmmmmmm P.s. If this was a legit company, why would the owner be requesting $100 for groceries and not studio time on the Cash app. I hope you make the right decision and don't trust this quote on quote 'company'

He can fix things over the phone, and you can pay on his website. He has picked my computer up and returned it to me on the same day. His prices are fair and decent. His knowledge is excellent. I used to bring my computer to Staples, where they made it worse, sold me bad protection products that slowed my computer down to a snails pace. (Neal can tell you all the great FREE services to use that are equal to the spending Norton versions!). Then Staples would end up selling me a new computer because they would say mine was dead. Neal fixes my problems faster and for less than Staples. I am so blessed to have finally found a tech guy who I can trust to take care of my computer problems and who is wonderful!!

However, I was here for a concert sponsored by the JanSport Bonfire Sessions. While way out in the boonies, with entrances that are sort of hard to find... you have yourself a great venue here. In fact, I had no idea this place was a studio -- I thought it was some private property you could rent out for shows, corporate retreats, or a really lovely rustic wedding (a wedding WOULD be fantastic here, fyi). AN old-timey and picturesque barn greets you in one of 2 cleared grassy areas. Take a little woodsy path over a bridge on a pond (charmingly lit with tea lights and paper lanterns all through-out the trees) to the second, larger grassy area which makes a nice intimate place for a show, ceremony, what have you. A charming farm house (which was off limits to us music lovers) is on the other edge of the property. Several fire-pits are available for warmth/weenie roasting, bales of hay to prop your butt, and even with the stream/standing water the bugs are minimal out here. My biggest complaint was the small # of port-a-potties available, but im sure if you are renting this place out for your own studio/venue needs you would have access to indoor plumbing. All in all, Bear Creek served as an awesome venue for the show we saw -- and I see so much potential for this place beyond just the studio recording they offer.
