I've been taken care of by Michelle Bostick for several months now after a pretty gruesome tibia/fibula break with broken heel and foot bones that I received from a snowboarding accident. This was not an easy recovery as I now have multiple plates and many screws just below my knee. Michelle has years of experience and was respectful of my progress, my goals, and my limitations. She helped me formulate a recovery plan that I was not only comfortable with but I believe accelerated my recovery and made it as painless as it could possibly be considering the damage that was done. She pushed when it was time to push and she rested when it was time to rest. I couldn't be more comfortable with the hands I was placed in. Avant is not only staffed with excellent PT's. The referral coordinators are knowledgeable and friendly as well, greeting you by your name when you arrive and making sure you are checked in and scheduled out. I had a horrible experience getting virtual PT from this clinic. Scheduling was always weeks out, sometimes over a month, even once I was established. I'd have to be put on a wait list for follow up appointments if I wanted to be seen when my PT suggested, which seems like really poor logistics on the part of the office. My PT, Ryan, was often condescending and impatient with me. He pushed my boundaries and minimized my concerns despite claiming to have a lot of experience with the complexities and sensitivities of my specific chronic illness, EDS. Most of the things he had me try flared me up. Nothing we did helped. He told me there was no way I could be hurt from a jaw massage he instructed me to do (despite my expressed concerns that it might be too intense and hurt me), and then when I was hurt and in horrible pain for weeks after, he told me I was just "anxious" and victim blamed me, sending me inappropriate and triggering resources about breathing techniques and CBT for psychosomatic pain instead of giving real suggestions and taking responsibility for the care that hurt me. We could have gone a lot slower or done motifications, but instead he told me I had to push myself if I ever wanted to get better, so I tried to trust him and I experienced awful pain and distress for over a month afterwards. My new PT, who is actually experienced in treating TMJ for people with EDS, thinks I had nerve compression from that massage and agrees it should have been modified or skipped given my condition. The office also took literally five months to submit the right forms to the right place to get my insurance to cover my visits and I had to continually check in about it. To top it off, I received an email early on about how their office would no longer require masking as soon as the mandate was dropped and they used minimizing and ableist language about it like "We can't wait to see your smiles again!" PT offices treat many high risk clients like disabled folks and older adults, and most disability rights and health activists (and I happen to be one) agree that the dropping of masks in healthcare was harmful and done inappropriately and prematurely. Yet Avant PT celebrated it and dropped masks the moment they could even while major health orgs like MultiCare and Kaiser continued to require masks for patient safety. Finally, just today I received a promotional mailing list email (for a mailing list I never signed up for, btw) that they'd accidentally CC'd everyone on instead of BCC, so my email along with hundreds others were released, violating HIPAA. I can say pretty confidently that your money, info, and health are not necessarily safe with this PT office, and I made sure to tell the EDS org about this horrible experience in the hopes that no one with my condition experiences this again. read more

I went to Avant for a few months and have only positive things to say. I felt treated as a whole person, loved the hour-long appointments, felt it was worth every penny I spent (and I paid for it myself). Laura Shellooe was my PT, and she was undoubtedly the best I've experienced. Avant seems to have a focus on dancers and other athletes that need full motion, strength, and ability to return to life pre-injury. Ryan enabled me to eat crunchy, chewy foods again!! I have EDS and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my jaw as well as TMJ, and was put on a soft food diet for several years. The doctors I had seen before Ryan told me I'd be on a soft food diet for the rest of my life. Ryan explained that the jaw is different from other joints when they degrade, and that I probably could eat real food again! And he was right!! After several months working with Ryan, the continuous headaches are gone and I'm eating salad and crusty bread! Honestly I feel like Ryan gave me my life back! While my splint doctor had told me about the "jaw exercises you can do", a one page handout from the dentist office was not enough to make me successful. Ryan was able to break down the exercises into smaller steps: literally the tubing for one exercise started small, then increased in size. As a person with EDS I have trouble with proprioception, so Ryan's coaching was imperative to make progress. For example, he showed me the signs that I was moving in a slightly wrong direction ("see how the tubing points up?") so that I can self-correct when I do my PT homework. I saw the other review from Lani and feel bad that she had such a different experience from me with the same PT! Indeed, there is a learning curve for any new PT when working on me, they often have to try something, and realize they gotta dial it back next time. As someone with EDS, I've come to realize that's part of the process and acceptable as long as over a few months I'm improving. I felt Ryan showed a lot of care for me. He knew when to be concerned about a symptom vs "oh that's a one off, don't worry about it". He was patient when I over-describe some situation that led to a flare up, and was able to kindly point out when I had a pattern that was making my symptoms worse ("are you sleeping on that side?"). He's also got a great sense of humor which makes the time fly by! Note: I come into the office in person. Virtual PT can work, but it's a lot harder and slower especially for the jaw (harder to demonstrate over video chat than a leg or arm). Like many with chronic diseases, I am still masking when I go out in public, but I don't mind that others around me are not masking, so the no-mask-required policy at Avant (now in 2023) doesn't bother me. Headline: Great experience and results with remote PT sessions. I contacted Bianca at Avant for some help this spring - Starting to get backaches and having posture issues (working at home - not much moving around). I was a bit trepidatious as I was much more used to doing in-person, but with Covid, I was not interested in that. So, we started a series of zoom appointments. Bianca would explain the exercises, assess how I was doing with them and change them up as needed. I was actually surprised at how well this worked. We worked on this for about 10 weeks and the transformation was amazing! No more pain in my back! No more fatigue at the end of the day! I would do remote PT again any time. The sum of it: Bianca is amazing at her craft. I developed chronic neck and shoulder pain for roughly 1.5 years, to the point I was unable to perform my desk job. Initially, I saw 2 chiropractors, 2 physicians, and 2 other physical therapists with minor improvements but still experienced fatiguing daily pain. I don't know where to start. Dr. Brenna Murray changed my life! March 2020 (as if we didn't all have enough going on), I slept wrong on my arm and developed what I learned later to be "long thoracic nerve palsy". I've never had an injury before of any kind - losing control of my arm was the most emotional and scary thing I've ever experienced. I went from a fully functional human to not being able to raise my arm above my shoulder. I couldn't even put 1 plate in a cabinet when emptying the dishwasher. I was terrified. I went to a chiropractor and massage therapist with minimal change until I decided to go to Avant. First, off, Ronnie at the front was wicked fast replying to my emails and super thorough and helpful with making sure I knew what to do, where to go, and how to get to their facility. She was a consistent smiling and friendly face up front and I'm so appreciative of her! Front desk staff can make or break a facility - Ronnie thank you for being so awesome! Dr. Brenna and I worked together from June/July until late November. Started twice a week, then once a week, then twice a month. She also referred me to a nerve specialist who worked me in and got me in SAME WEEK! I don't know a lot about nerve specialists, but the entire facility seemed SHOCKED that I'd gotten an appointment so fast. Thanks to Brenna and her connections! That's where I got the confirmed diagnosis of "long thoracic nerve palsy". LTNP is apparently on the more rare side, which also intimidated me into the belief that I may never get 100% better. Using that diagnosis, Brenna and I got to work. Mostly Brenna. Brenna has the perfect balance of friendliness, communication, intelligence, and passion for her craft. Her personality helped me feel comfortable in her care and trust her process. She helped me push myself safely and kept me engaged with my progress. There were days that I didn't think I was improving and I began trying to cope with not having function in my arm anymore (drama queen). Brenna reassured me that my progress might feel slow to me but that I was on track. Some injuries repair fast, nerve injuries aren't one of them. I'm writing this today FULLY HEALED! My entire experience was during the pandemic so I was super mindful of the cleanliness and level of integrity with regards to sanitation. Even down the the medicine balls, everything was cleaned between uses. They had appointments staggered so there was minimal traffic at the entrance or in the weight area. It helped me feel comfortable and allowed me to focus on my progress. Masks required and mandatory hand washing before entering the facility as well as a temperature check and a hand sanitizer station at the front desk. Avant was my last stop after trying 7 other physical therapy clinics (over a 13 year period) with back, shoulder, knee and ankle issues. While working with other clinics I was given 30 minute sessions, which I thought was normal. I noticed Avant offers 60 minute sessions as their norm. I realized as a result of this I healed and recovered much quicker than before. Avant's physical therapy sessions are jam packed with diagnosing, massaging and putting you through very targeted physical therapy exercises. After each session you're provided an updated custom home program accessible through their phone app. They have lots of great equipment (everything is also very clean, even prior to COVID). They also have a very large space with lots of room for people being treated. I've worked with multiple physical therapists at this clinic. I noticed everyone stays up to date on the latest information pertaining to different facets of PT. They also work with athletes/dancers, which is a nice perk because you get the same level of care as an athlete. One thing to be aware of is insurance companies will deny coverage after a certain amount of visits, so you want to make sure the clinic you work with is staying on top of your recovery process while providing all the tools you need to heal, get better and get back to living a normal life. I noticed Avant takes patient care and results seriously, while at the same time, they're also super fun to work with. The entire team is just friendly, upbeat and on top of it. I've dislocated my shoulder over 2 dozen times and have always been hesitant to get surgery or see a specialist until one day it popped out when I pumped my fist in the air too hard. My two good friends immediately recommended that I see Kate and it was one of my best decisions to date. This was my second time doing recovery work with Bianca and I couldn't have been happier with the results. Given the pandemic I was a little apprehensive in tele PT at first as I thought I needed someone to diagnose my injuries face to face. But my gut said go for it and it paid off! I've had knee pain while hiking downhill for years and finally made an appointment for Avant. Background: I have been having lower back pain that radiated down my left leg and had gone to see a chiropractor to correct and adjust the issue. The symptoms would re-occur if I went more than a week without getting adjusted. After a long time (6 months?) with no progress, my chiropractor highly recommended I go to Avant to see a Physical Therapist. She thought that it may be a muscle imbalance. My experience at Avant: I started going to Avant and Bianca was my PT. I received an initial assessment and found out I had a huge muscle imbalance in my glutes and legs causing my hips to tilt to one side (which is what my chiropractor tried adjusting). I saw Bianca once a week, then, later every 2 weeks and just had my last session with her today. Before I started going to Avant I would get lower back pain that radiated down my left leg and get really tight in my hamstrings and IT band. Bianca and I did different workouts every session and she constantly changed my workouts as I progressed. Bianca was professional and absolutely the best. She pushed me and believed in me the entire journey. The at home workouts were easily accessible on my phone. I was even able to do them at work. The Med Bridge App reminded me how to do my workouts and kept me accountable. I did not expect to feel better just in 3 months. I am now able to run without any leg or back pain. I can now workout with confidence. I ran my first 6 miles ever two weeks ago and 3.5 miles yesterday. I signed up for the Seattle half-marathon in December! Ashlie helped rehabilitate my lower back. This is my first experience in Pysical Therapy where i've recovered in a substantially life-transforming way. I have recurring pain in the lower disc area after a car accident ten years prior. I chose Ashlie because I was experiencing marginal improvement at my then-current physical therapist. It felt rushed and I was feeling defeated, so my back doctor provided me with names of local PT's with specialized back injury expersite. Reviews for Avant referencing Ashlie as a specialized Therapist were also pivotal towards my decision to begin a working with her. Best decision, hands down. On a scale of 1-10, my pain had been at least an 8, but our treatment sessions brought me down to 1! Ashlie was very positive and supportive, and offered solutions to my ever-changing needs. It was a really comprehensive approach to healing, including helping me better understand the relationship between my body and mind regarding pain and healing. For my back, her recovery program utilized Biofeedback instruction, muscle strengthening excercises, manual therapy, therapeutic yoga and somatic breathing intruction, along with a personailzed Plan for the future. If I had just one word to sum up Laura and Avant Physical Therapy, it would be AWESOME. Luckily, yelp gives me more space than a single word, so here are a few more to back that up. I went in to Laura with a shitstorm of injuries. Displaced foot bone in one foot, ankle pain in another, knee pain, hip dysplasia, poorly healed level 2 shoulder separation, rotater cuff impingement, torn abductor and double strained extensor. Many of the injuries have had PT before, and they did help temporarily, but it never solved the root cause. After seeing the most amazing Sports Med doc (Dr. Yen at Minor and James - who I found on yelp), I came to Laura for PT because of yelp again, and it was totally spot on. As an extreme sport athlete, I have seen my share of PT throughout my adult life around the country. I have had some really good physical therapists, and some crappy ones, but without a doubt, Laura is the best there is. She takes an extremely wholistic approach, and with her deep understanding of the musculature and skeletal structure, she can really thinks about the root cause of an issue, not just the symptom. The work is slow and methodical, because she's going for a permanent fix not a band-aid. It's thorough, systematic and I believe, will save me from future injury (or worse, surgeries). Avant- is an absolutely amazing clinic. I got my physical therapy from Corissa after being in significant pain from herniated disk and time I was really sad. She cares, knows her stuff and helps you come out of pain and beyond that makes you stronger. She challenged me and supported me, pushed me to become fit. I still use her physical therapy exercises on daily basis in my gym which has made me stronger and I feel much better. Everyone in the facility cares about you, is super helpful and polite. Bianca at Avant literally saved my feet and my ability to walk. I'd had a year of medical problems that left me in pain every time I walked. No better PT in Seattle! I used to see Laura, and then saw Bianca, and these ladies are miracle workers (and AMAZING human beings)!! Starting out with PT, I was nervous because I had no idea what to expect and I didn't love the feeling of being a little helpless and weak. Laura helped me to gain so much traction with strengthening my neck, and she was so supportive and had so much knowledge. About 9 months later I had given up on strengthening on my own so I went back to Avant - and they welcomed me with open arms! All of my insecurities melted away when I met Bianca, who was so knowledgeable and immediately invested in me and my body's development. I had nerve pinching under my armpits and it was getting in the way of a productive, comfortable workday. After my ACL knee surgery I needed extensive PT to rehabilitate. I wanted somewhere close to my house so I could leave work for the hour, do PT, and come back, I got really lucky because Avant was super close and I had an amazing experience. Everything from right after surgery to now (a 9 month journey) has been a great experience! Even in the midst of a pandemic and the winter blues the staff was incredibly friendly and so encouraging. Little victories were celebrated and when things were hard they helped me push through. They have great PT tools (blood flow restriction and EMS) to help expedite progress. I have been to a spinal specialist, chiropractor, sports medicine doctor, and another physical therapist but nothing compares to the care and attention Bianca Saad provided me during my 6-week rehab program @ Avant. I'm a competitive crossfit athlete, broke my back twice in 2016 (a compression fracture in my L5 + a high-impact fall fracturing the L3 through L5 transverse processes), and have always struggled with back pain (obviously some times more excruciatingly than others). My experience with Avant and my therapist Bianca was stellar! What I loved the most about my care there was that Bianca used her skills and expertise to assess the root cause of my shoulder pain and methodologically prescribed personalized exercises every week. She modified the exercises based on my progress, access to equipment at home and lifestyle. One would probably expect this from any PT clinic however I had been to 2 different ones prior to this and in both cases was sent home with a set of generic exercises on paper with no follow up. When the pandemic hit I needed to see Bianca for a second round of therapy. Avant offered telemedicine which allowed me to have my appointments via a video web conference. These sessions were very well conducted in that Bianca was very clear in her instructions and we accomplished what we needed despite not being together in the clinic. In my opinion it did not diminish the effectiveness of having an in-person appointment (for this type of case). After 6 weeks of treatment and by doing the prescribed exercises, I no longer have the shoulder pain and carry out activities comfortably. I recommend Avant if you have any type of pain or discomfort and to at least let them do an assessment on you. The overall intake, appointment booking process and payment was easy as well (Thanks to Ronnie!). Couple of months back I injured my right knee while practising martial arts, krav maga to be precise. I was unsure of the pain so decided to schedule an appointment with my doctor. He referred me for a physical therapy and basically gave me a list of centres across Seattle where I can enroll for the same. Going through the comments over yelp and google, I chose Avant physical therapy owing to it's awesome reviews and user comments. Well 2 months into this program and I am glad that I made this prefect decision of enrolling myself in this elegant, highly friendly and professional environment. The therapy ended today and I am just awestruck by the shape that I am in right now compared to the limping one that I was in a couple of months back. Kudos to my trainer Bianca Saad, she is hands down the best instructor you can get around Seattle. Bianca was instrumental in my COMPLETE recovery, her method of training the mind and body as a perfect symphony is totally unquestionable. She would patiently listen to your complaints, pay attention to details, carefully observe and correct your body nits, EXPLAIN how and why the body mechanics works in a certain way and finally help in connecting all the pieces together to make you fit as before. Thanks to her, I have joined my martial arts routine back, planning to take swimming lessons soon and recently had an awesome Alaskan trip where I could do things like ice climbing, glacier walking, hiking effortlessly. I am extremely elated with the fact that how quickly I was able to recover with Bianca's help. I had a wrist injury from tennis that resulted in recurring sharp pain. I visited Avant about 2.5 months after the injury and at that point I did not feel pain doing normal activities but only from playing tennis. This made it hard to diagnose the issue but Ashlie's massage therapy and exercises were still very helpful. I especially appreciate her having me do the blood-flow restriction therapy for the rest of my treatment, which really helped. I had one session per week. After five sessions, my wrist had recovered enough that I was able to start playing light tennis and I did not need anymore therapy. Ashlie was caring and attentive in all our sessions and provided me with the exercises and treatment that led to my recovery and for that I'm very grateful. read more

Bianca Saad's support as a pelvic PT was invaluable during my pregnancy. She addressed all my challenges and drew a brilliant connection between a previous foot injury and my pelvic pain. I am a sports medicine physician in the community, and Laura Bannister and the Avant Physical Therapy team are terrific I frequently recommend them to patients because patients simply get better when they see the Avant team. Everybody at Avant is pleasant and a pleasure to work with. More importantly, from my perspective, is that they are technically excellent physical therapists. I think one of the most challenging processes in evaluating a clinician is knowing how they are technically. From my perspective as a physician, Laura is the best. Beyond their excellent interpersonal skills and technical abilities, the Avant team is unusually good at communicating. They are quick to contact the physician if the patient is progressing differently than anticipated (either better or worse), and I think this is another hallmark of their excellence.
