3.5 stars for Avalon Pockets as of right now. I've been to Avalon Pockets twice now and will note that
1) They're in "soft open/preview" mode right now. Their menu is super limited until their official "grand opening" next month.
2) I visited during their first week open, so some hiccups and issues are to be expected.
Both of my visits to Avalon Pockets were similar - with great food but questionable service that they really need to fix quickly.
The current preview menu basically includes four options of wraps: gyro, lamb kabob (which is not served as a kabob), falafel or grilled veggies. Each comes with various topping options like tzatziki sauce, hummus, lettuce, onions, olives and peppers. For a little more money ($1 or $2), you can get the combo which includes the wrap, a drink and "Mediterranean Fries" which are just thick cut potato chips. They also offer a kids meal which includes the food and a toy of some sort.
*Update* The combo only included the "fries" during the grand-soft-opening. You can now choose either the wrap itself for $5 or the wrap and a drink for $6.
The food portions are perfect for lunch, but would definitely be too small for a real dinner. I've had the gyro and lamb kabobs and my wife has had the falafel. All three were enjoyable without being particularly exciting.
The "fries" have been a mixed bag. The first time I went in, they were nice and crisp with a perfectly salty seasoning. The second time, they were soggy and bland.
As I mentioned earlier, the service is where they really need to focus right now - especially speed.
My first visit was during the week at about 1pm. When I arrived, there were already a few people seated and waiting for their food. I stood at the counter for few minutes being pretty much ignored by the staff of two. They saw me, but didn't acknowledge me at all. I wasn't sure if I was meant to just sit at a table and wait or wait at the counter. Eventually, someone came over and took my order.
The restaurant is very small - with about 8 or 9 tables crammed into the dining area and there's a tv playing music videos (which I believe are Turkish). The decor is pleasant if confusing: a painting of what seems to be a french bistro, some country setting paintings and one of what seems to be Venice. I sat and waited for my food - facing away from the counter. The tv and music were up so loud that I didn't even hear them calling my name to come pick up my food at first. I had waited about 10 minutes for my food.
I returned with my wife at about noon on Saturday. The dining room was packed with people waiting for their food. Once again, we stood waiting to be acknowledged, but not as long as the first visit. But while we were acknowledged quicker, we had to wait longer as no one was able to take our order just yet. While we waited to order, more people started arriving and lining up behind us to order.
Eventually, we ordered and sat down waiting. People were getting so tired of waiting just to order, they were leaving. I'm sure that if some people hadn't already ordered, they would have left too. It seems that they were pretty backed up even before we got there. By the time we finally got our food, we had been there almost an hour.
Avalon Pockets has really good food - and it's very fresh, but they really need to figure out how to get it out quicker - and to handle customers quicker. read more
