An intimate Turkish restaurant on Park Avenue, Lale blew me away! To start, you have to order the lavash. We ordered two for a table a 4 because it's just that good. It's always amazing to see how much puff there is! We got a plate of haydari and a plate of babaganush to dip and enjoy with it. For my main, I got a plate of chicken Adana which came with rice and orzo blend along with pickled vegetables. The chicken was tender and flavorful. Pickled red cabbage is always my favorite and theirs was delicious. A classic dish done superbly! Lale is a tucked away gem on popular Park Avenue! Felt like such a treat. After weighing a few nearby options, we decided to give Lale a try. As we came in pretty early, we had no trouble getting a table but the establishment is quite cozy and packed in quickly. Make a reservation if you want to dine during peak hours. We enjoyed a variety of excellent dishes and pleasant service during our evening. We of course started with a lavash and a couple of dips. The hot hummus was by far our favorite! That's a must try! The ezme was a close second. Very flavorful with a touch of heat! I also have to rave about the falafel. I always find falafel to be hit or miss because often times they can be dry. Came here towards the end of lunch on a summer Thursday afternoon around 2. There was one waiter who was clearly overwhelmed. There was table that was done indoors and it took another half hour to clear. We said we'd wait outside and browse the menu meanwhile. We've been to Lale twice and really enjoyed the food and service! It's menu offers some unique Turkish items that I've never seen at other nearby Turkish restaurants. Our favorites have been the hot hummus, lavas, sausage pide, and Lahmacun, which is my personal favorite. It's ground meat blended with fresh peppers, tomatoes, parsley and herbs on thin crust dough, served with seasoned onions with parsley. It's like a small pizza taco flatbread. We enjoyed our meal with sidewalk seating...a sampling of spreads, lavash, and the mixed grill....pretty much exactly what we order at the other place. While the other place maybe does just slightly better on the service side ("let me tell what each item is") the meats tasted just slightly better here at Lale. The farmers salad was so good, but I'm not a huge fan of parsley. The chunky pieces of tomato, red onions and cucumber, salt & pepper was delicious and so fresh. Main dish was the Doner kabab dinner. The side of basmati rice and the freshest of little side salad. It also has some sauce that adds flavor but the meat stands on its own. The meat is tender and full of mild flavor. The flavor profile is perfect and not over salted. It really was good. Desert- please, if you get anything get the Kenefe. My friend thought this was a treat and it was. A special cheese wrapped in shredded filo dough with a simple syrup on top served warm. The whole meal was an experience and it was lovely. We sat outdoors really close the the street. The word "lale" translates to "tulip" and, after my first visit, my two lips were smacking with delight after enjoying a lovely Mediterranean luncheon here. Originally interested in the Turkish sausage pide (sold out) I was convinced to try the pastrami pide instead. How delicious! The thinly-sliced, dried pastrami was excellent and, even with the dough, light enough to be disguised as an appetizer but filling enough to serve as an entree. I dined alone and enjoyed the whole restaurant to myself, which gave me time to talk to my lovely server who told me food is made to order fresh at Lale - my side salad was testament to this. But last time we invited some friends and we all came away disappointed with the main dishes. They weren't bad but there was nothing special about eating them in a restaurant. Over Labor Day, the restaurant was staffed with one young man as a server who tried his best to accommodate all the tables but naturally, it was difficult to do. We waited a long time for silverware or a plate. The food also gave my friend and I stomach aches for 2 hours after dining which was strange because we ordered the cold apps and mostly vegetables.
