Mid to late March 2020. They're filming an episode of Walking Dead on the beach town/ Island of Avalon NJ. **Scratch!!!** Not really. It just feels like it. For someone who enjoys my own company I'm starting to feel the weight of social distancing. As I write this I'm nine days in. I don't get it, I prefer talking with folks via this gadget in my hand. So why on this Island does often being the only one for miles around feel this lonely? A bit scary? 'rona I hate you. The first day I walked the streets I saw NO ONE. NOW, the one or two folks who sometimes pass me jogging as I walk is a refreshing change of pace and I act extremely friendly. I say act because although I'm all giddy with happiness at seeing other people, I'm hesitant to get too close so it's always a six feet quick hi and bye. The people here are friendly though. Sometimes, well maybe once I forgot where I was. I forgot about the pandemic threatening the world and I felt as if I was in a village in Tobago (Trinidad and) and what a peace that came over me. I'm not a beach lover and I haven't actually touched Avalon's sand as yet. I've been on the bay side but I haven't walked the beach. I do enjoy my morning strolls on the boardwalk though. Awful experience. Went during early august. Me and my fiancé were barely knee deep in the water, not in the surf area remotely, were around a few other folks enjoying the water. This (im assuming a teenage) life guard kept blowing his whistle at us to head his direction. So we did. He did it again, at that point I noticed a huge crowd infront of him, playing in the water. I really was fine where I was, I did not wanna deal with the huge crowd of kids and people. A few other people were around us too, knee deep. But he was targeting me and my fiancé for whatever reason?? We move closer because we just dont wanna make a scene. Then the lifeguard whistles again and condescendingly waves at my fiancé for us to get in the huge crowd of people. Mind you, we were not in a restricted zone. There were others around us who were wading in the water barely knee deep. Why was this lifeguard targeting us and being a dick? Would not recommend, unless you like getting attitude from condescending trust fund frat boys who roofie on the weekend who have nothing better to do with their lives. read more

Avalon is a slice of heaven with a beach and everything else required for a great vacation. It has everything for all ages , except the incredible boardwalks that ocean city or wildwood offer. There are great places for happy hours and nightlife for the younger generations. I rented a house here with friends in our 20's and had a lot of fun. There are some nice restaurants with many opening in the past few years. It is quiet and peaceful with beautiful beaches and bike lanes. Definitely a great option the the crowded towns like ocean city and cape may. read more

Was able to find parking most days of a busy summer week within 3 blocks of the beach access. Regular ice cream truck stops at each beach entrance. 2013 tags were at $6/day $12/week. There's no support for that.Day-beachers take themselves instead to Ventnor, Margate, Atlantic City, Wildwood, & Ocean City. For Avalon, Sea Isle, & Stone Harbor: you have to have real money to live here. But you can enjoy all this, even at the $$$ price. Cuz Avalonians turn their homes back to the realtors each May. $20,000 dollars per house. Who pays? Young Philadelphians. 20 bozos @ $1k per head. Sleeping on the floor like a fraternity, getting stupid and sleazy. Playacting to each other that they are beach-savvy. But this is the striking difference between Avalon families vs rootless young urban 20-sumptins who season-rent the town so maniacally. One half of the relationship never grasps that they are dilettantes. The year-round adults down here handle boats and sails every day. But renters--of any age--all revert to a strange form of overgrown toddler. Cramming food, guzzling suds, grabbing tits & ass, babbling. It is probably safe to say that *this* generation of Philly brats will never morph into future Avalon homeowners. When you wander through the temporarily-vacated castles, you can often discover delicacy and grace in the home decor. Clues sometimes indicate homeowners with real class. By the very evidence of the town itself (how it is laid-out & maintained) the owners here have clearly lived long enough--invested enough energy in life & relationships--to acquire some real values. These must be individuals who live simply & tastefully. Ocean-devoted souls who savor tranquility, responsibility, domesticity. Surely, admirers of seaside life--else, why choose this beach to erect such expensive homes? Anyway. Memorial wknd is the shot that starts the race. The latest wave of dizzo's charge down Route 42 with their new toys; new clothes, godawful Top40 EDM; & gab about Batman movies. In 12 hrs, their stoned, drunken, drugged bodies are splayed wall-to-wall in these pride-and-joy mansions thanks to weed & beer blowouts. Hash, cigs, kegs, pizza, ecstacy, beer luges, vodka, bongs, bands, dancing, blowjobs, and vomiting. As twelve long weekends wear on--the same gossipy incidents which happen every year--always recur over again. At least one jealous brawl (two guys fight over some Barbie-doll), someone is kicked out of a bar, someone else fined, someone else drunkenly sheds off all their clothes, a little copulation is interrupted in the dunes, a pig roast, someone falls off the end of a dock. Absolutely the best beach ever, go here! I've lived here my entire life and my parents/grandparents before me. The beaches are much better than Sea Isle or Ocean City (larger and less crowded) and perfect for a weekend getaway or an entire summer vacation :) Avalon will never disappoint - locals are friendly and the restaurants (Cafe Loren is the one I recommend) are charming. I love Avalon, NJ! And Stone Harbor! There is nothing more relaxing than hanging out on the beach, soaking up the sun, and either napping or reading your favorite book. Beach tags are pricey, yes. It can get crowded, yes. Especially on holidays and weekends. But it's still a lovely place to go to escape from the boring everyday routine. 5/5 ! read more

Avalon is a great little town but steer clear the beaches, the beach patrol thinks they are secret agents. Don't take frisbee you'll get arrested, I witnessed a group of 13 year olds get harassed for throwing . I rented a surf board and sat it down by my towel. Then ran into the ocean to get used to the water. A lifeguard ran up and told me I couldn't swim when I asked why, the yelled call the lieutenant. The lieutenant and beach patrol captain Murray Wolf showed up stating that the police have been called and that I needed to stay put. At this point I was packing up my things and started exiting the beach. Once I got to the parking lot the Captian was already on the street in his truck stating that if I leave every cop in the area was gonna be looking for me. Seconds after a cop pulls up and hears both sides, the cops proceeds to tell me he's citing me for refusing to get out of the water. A friend of mine filmed the whole thing and showed the cop that I was walking out of the water before the lifeguard even got to me. At this point the cop said he a had no grounds to write a citation but said that he needed my information because the beach patrol still wanted to send me a violation. I asked for what they said failure to have a beach tag, so I pulled mine out and assured him that I had one, but they stilled wanted to charge me but couldn't tell me what for all they told me was that I would be receiving some in the mail. I bought beach tags and rented a surf board that day never was I told that i couldn't swim, there wasn't a sign any where that advised people the beach was closed for swimming. That being said the beach patrol think they are the police but they are actually driving people away from Avalon....I'd recommend stone harbor or cape may where the lifeguards are respectful and talk to you like you are a human being an not criminal read more

Amazing beach! The sand is a nice white color with beautiful views. Right on the beach is an arcade and restaurant for kids to enjoy, there's also several restaurants, ice cream shoppes, and mini golf within a couple minute drive! I highly recommend you come here for your beach trip, only downside is there is a $5 dollar charge (but they usually don't notice you come in shhhhhh) read more

This beach is very nice, clean, and relaxing. If you love hearing whistles every 15 seconds I would say this beach is for you. Oh and don't even try to go in the water. The lifeguards will blast their whistles at you and make random hand movements when you are in the ocean ankle deep. Ok so how about playing a game or two by the water. Nope, I tried having a catch with a football near the water and after 10 seconds the lifeguards came up to us and told us to stop. This was the worst experience I have ever had at a beach. It's sad that I can't even enjoy a nice beach with nice waves because of lifeguards not letting us go in the water. If you want to have fun I DO NOT recommend this beach. If you want to relax I do not recommend this beach. If you love laying down on the sand and hearing loud whistles while your trying to relax this is for you. read more

I have been to most of the beach towns in Jersey, Maryland and Delaware over the years. My favorite in the the northeast is Avalon. I love Stone Harbor and Cape May as well. For me the beach is about escape from the hustle and bustle and crowds and noise of urban life. So these places slow life down and they thankfully lack the crowds. read more

Been to many beaches in the U.S. and this is undoubtedly tops. And yes it's New Jersey! Wide white soft sandy beach. Beautiful dunes. Plenty of parking. Small boardwalk. Lots of room on the beach too. Yes, you do have to go in the water in front of the lifeguards and yes they don't let you go out too far. Don't like that? Then stay till they leave and after 5:30 do whatever you want. And to the reviewer complaining about the beach tags and the cost ... I have news for you ... Cape May has them too and the cost is the same. And Wildwood is just a few miles south and totally free. read more

Don't come here if you plan on swimming the life guards will wave you in when in knee deep water and continue waving their arms in signs you won't understand every 10 seconds until you just get out of the water not only is it annoying but it's like playing a game of charades when the lifeguard is waving up, down, side to side, and too lazy to actually come and tell you what you can do and not do and if you plan on taking a nap on the beach have fun hearing an annoying lifeguard whistle blow every 10 seconds. All I can say is AVOID THIS PLACE for vacation. Go elsewhere. Unless you enjoy annoying a** 15 year old lifeguards who can't do their job correctly and panic at the sight of someone actually going in the ocean. read more

I had a home built by Walsh Builders because their reputation was so good. I think the people who gave these recommendations must be on the Walsh payroll! Extremely poor quality roofing materials were used in our home. Every time there is a storm we have damage. Our roof has cost us a large sum of money in the last 10 years both repairing the roof itself and the leaks inside which have ruined carpets and furniture. The outside light fixtures are also cheaply made and have had to be replaced. The company also installed fiberglass deck flooring which is awful! After 2 years it looked as if the deck flooring was on a 30 year old home. Unfortunately, all 3 decks have this covering and we have already had to replace one deck flooring and are in the process of replacing the other 2. The worst part of all of this the lack of communication on the part of the company. Long before the warranty was up, they failed to return any phone call or emails. Right before the warranty was up, a worker arrived to repair nail pops. This was also done very poorly and there are still many nail pops. It is impossible to get in touch with anyone who can help us resolve these issues, especially the roof and decking whic have cost us a large sum of money. My advice... Don't use this company for new construction!! read more
