Chronic garbage stench in the 1 & 2nd floor hallways (and sometimes inside our apartment) since spring 2024, and still happening today. They clean but they don't replace the broken compactor system. Residents have reported to the dept of health, then Avalon makes promises, but it never seems to be resolved. It was really hell. SO - don't live on floors 1 or 2. Plus... mice. They get extermination in regularly, but I don't think they can stop the mice. We also had a window frame that leaked with every heavy rain. Ruined a table, puddles on the floor, mold on the window blinds. Took a couple years for them to finally fix it. (Huge block of black colored mold was inside the wall when they opened it.) We also had 2 floods, totaling 3.5 months without a home. Lost half of our belongings, and had to clean up ourselves after the walls and ceilings were replaced. Lots of mold. The second flood (and perhaps the first) was a result of pipes not being up to code. They immediately fired the head of maintenance. Also, Avalon is a big corporation that unsurprisingly has no heart. My small business failed, and I had a period unable to pay. When I was able to catch up, Avalon did not want to let us stay. (After all they put us through!!) So we voluntarily left in June 2025. Overall Avalon in the Hingham Shipyard is a nice place to live, the residents are really nice, and the staff is nice. I miss all of that. But absolutely avoid the first two floors, and tour several times to be sure there is no garbage stench in the hallways. And demand everything be fixed immediately. Maintenance is always messing with something. Noise, noise , noise. There are apt. inspections all the time. If they aren't redoing/repairing something on the interior, they're working outside on the exterior or in the parking lots. They live to interupt your day and your peace! Then there are the elders with grandkids who drive you batty with them racing up and down the hallways and out in the lots. If you have an issue, you won't get a human to talk to--all is automated now. When you approach the reception desk you're told "You can do this online, you know?" And the rent jumps--$400 at a wallop! I'm lazy so I don't feel like moving yet since my partner died. However, I"m on the lookout for a better residence. read more

Nice location, nice amenities, nice place if you want to stay short term but if you have any intention of staying over a year good luck getting a fair rent increase. Here for seven years and seven increases, some as much as 20%. Could usually talk them down a bit but when they dig their heels in that's it, no consideration for the fact that we have been here for years with a 100% payment on time record and excellent credit score, doesn't matter, we aren't people we're just a business deal. This year was it, they wanted $400 more a month, negotiated to $250 and that was it. Sent in the vacate notice. Then watched as they listed our apartment for less than what we were asking. Nice. I'm not writing this to give them extra stars or get free Girl Scout cookies or anything like that. I'm honestly saying this is by far the best apartment community I've lived in (and I've lived in 3 states and two countries). I moved from Back Bay to Hingham @ the Shipyard in November 2020, and I'm so happy here. Hingham is a beautiful little town and the harbor is only 2 1/2 blocks away. My apartment is great: it's been totally remodeled, has hardwood floors, a ton of storage space, my own thermostat and washer/dryer. Plus I have a heated, private garage connected to my building. All for $1000 less than Back Bay. Jacy at the leasing office is amazing and always available to help. There are inevitable hiccups when moving, and she worked with me so I could get exactly what I wanted (even when I decided to change apartments at the last minute). She's really thoughtful and is great at her job. Maintenance is fantastic. They're efficient and know what they're doing. The grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. When we have a storm, the plows are out right away and all the paths and building entrances are cleared. All in all, these apartments truly deserve the 5 star rating. read more

Amazing poor first experience. I arrived at the shipyard at 3:50 for a 4pm appointment. The address was a little difficult for navigation, so I called for specifics. A fellow told me he was inside of what the shipyard was and asked me what state it was in. After 5 minutes of vague directions I had to hang up. I found it myself a few minutes later and walked in. It was 4:10. I was told that In would not be given the scheduled appointment because 4pm was too late. I'm speachless regarding this experience, however if this is a hint of the experience that others can have here run far away. I really am amazed at this poor service and lack of sense. Management poor to follow-up on a water billing concern for us. Our building and amenity areas for the community are in need of improvements - Furniture and décor in the amenity areas are out dated and/or damaged. Maintenance team are professional and friendly - expect your work orders to be completed within 24-48 hours. read more

My wife and I moved here over the winter, and it's been a cut-and-dry fantastic experience. When it snows, they plow immediately. When the sun comes out, they landscape. When my appliance breaks down, the maintenance guys come running. Property management is a tough gig, and the team here is very, very good at it. I would say it's like living in a hotel, but as a Hilton guy, no kidding, I like my apartment better. The location, needless to say, is tops. The shopping center nearby has a good blend of stores and restaurants, but we've really been enjoying the proximity to the ferry. Being able to hop on the ferry to the airport, or for an impromptu North End dinner, has been life-changing. One minor gripe, just so I don't sound like a total shill: The windows let in a lot of ambient noise. If someone outside is being loud, you'll probably hear it. That said, I've been in lux apartments that were twice as expensive and twice as noisy, so I don't consider this a big drawback - especially because the residents are all conscious of this, and very courteous. In all, I would absolutely recommend this property to others. read more

Before getting to the specifics of Avalon, the overall Hingham Shipyard development is AMAZING...stores, restaurants, Fresh Market, CVS, Movies and best of all, the ferries to Boston (some even stop at Logan Airport). As for Avalon, it is stress-free for sure. From your initial visit to the Leasing Office, Jacy and her team will help you locate an apartment/townhome in your desired budget. They have a crew of Maintenance staff on duty each day, so if you have an issue, it gets resolved promptly, including after hours, as someone is "on call" 24-7 for emergencies. The community has a summer BBQ and holiday party each year, with great food. The fitness center was remodeled a few years ago and is great. They have a community room that is huge. Plenty of free parking! I would not hesitate at all to return to Avalon Hingham if I was returning to the area. read more

Terrible first experience and waste of time. I called Avalon on Thursday of last week to discuss my options for a 6-month least as we are in between home buying. I gave the woman on the phone my requirements and budget and was told that this would be feasible for a six month rental. I walked into the leasing office today and within 5 minutes of being there, was quoted a price that was $1500/month more than what was discussed on the phone (keep in mind my budget was not out of the question to begin with). I toured the Avalon Apartments at The Hingham Shipyard yesterday. What a total disappointment. Shoddy construction. Looked like a cheap hotel room with hollow doors, cheap plywood kitchen cabinets, cheap industrial lighting fixtures and what looked like a used refrigerator. All for a minimum of $2600/month without utilities. The town of Hingham should be ashamed to have allowed such shoddy construction. Wonder who was paid off !!!! DO NOT GO THERE. SAVE YOUR MONEY. YOU WOULD BE BETTER IN A TRAILER PARK !!!! read more

I've lived here since 09 & I can't say enough about how great it is - Jill, Tricia & the rest of the staff, maintenance included are top notch! Love my commute to Boston & when my nieces & nephews visit "my pool" they have a blast. If I have a complaint (which is rare) it's handled. We moved from NY to Boston and toured apartment after apartment in Braintree, Quincy, Hingham, and Hull. We actually drove past Avalon at the shipyard because they were the top of our budget, but couldn't resist the look. Staff was very accommodating to us every time we came into the office. Love, love, love our apartment! We are in a 2 bed with loft, honestly the only noise we have heard is, if we are in the bedroom we can here neighbors toilet paper roll, lol. We have never heard anything else not even the toilet flushing. Never here neighbors coming or going. Amenities are great, exercise equipment does have breakdowns but there is always an empty machine to use. Location is wonderful! Walk to ferry, walk to eat, walk to the movies, walk to grocery shop, walk to marina. Maintenance staff is excellent in ther response times, always courteous and friendly. Worth the price. read more

Just transferred to Hingham Shipyard from Avalon Cohasset and feel this was the right move financially for me. I was given great advice and great service during this transfer. Pros * Convenient to Hingham Ferry * Relatively new apartments * Friendly service at the Welcome Center (as opposed to corporate) Cons * Construction is low quality. * Very thin walls (you can hear your neighbors TV program and alarm clock clearly). * Very drafty windows (we had to crank the heat in the 1BR apartment to stay warm in the winter) * Gym equipment is often broken. * Most importantly -- TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE with the corporate office. 1. They used small print in my move out documents to try to change the terms of my flexible lease contract. This would have resulted in me paying an additional 2.5 months of additional rent. When I disputed and held them to the original contract that I signed, they told me they'd "help me out" and but that I shouldn't "spread the word." 2. I was told by the Welcome Office that I could avoid a post-move out cleaning charge if I cleaned the apartment myself. I scrubbed the apartment clean, patched holes, and left the apartment in very good condition. Nonetheless, I was charged $210 anyway. 3. Corporate told me to not pay with cleaning charge while they investigated my claim that the apartment was left clean. Apparently they never dropped the charge/ sent me a follow up bill - instead I got a notice from a collection agency that my $210 payment was past due. Overall, Avalon made my move-out experience overly complicated, more costly than expected, and they have not been customer-friendly. To any folks considering living here - read your contracts and bills carefully and be prepared to shell out more money than expected at the end of your lease. read more

Hang on to your hats...this place is a joke. I have been here for a year and learned the following: 1. This is not "luxury" to the residents, however one might say "luxury" to the people in a different income class. Many families from the Coast Guard live here for 1/2 of what the normal residents pay. Yes, I did a great deal of homework - interviewed many of the tenants to learn that the "exhorbitant" rent helps subsidize others cost of living. 2. The grounds are not well kept - garbage unit was closed for several weeks in which it overflowed and needed to be placed in a nearby dumpster. Many of the plantings are dead and have not been replaced since living here (yes, I asked for them to be removed upon my arrival), the gym equipment does not work (yes, again after being here for one year and asked for attention - was told several times they needed to order a part), cigarette butts everywhere you walk, etc. 3. My unit leaked during the winter - 3 times. The grate covering the airconditioner fell on me while sleeping because it wasn't properly secured. The windows are not well insulated. 4. Check, check, check other residents fee structure. There is no method to the madness. They claim that it's due to "market rates" however I have many friends in the residential and commercial real estate business and they said "not true". Avalon takes advantage of its close proximity to the commuter boat and restaurants (the shops are terrible) and when you add it all up, you can get much nicer for a heck of a lot cheaper. 5. The unit was freezing, space around door jams, doors don't close all the way, garage door not well insulated. I called maintenance during the winter and they ended up bringing me 2 electrical heating units. Yes, my electrical bills were through the roof. 6. If you happen to have guests over, there is no parking whatsoever. 7. My neighbors on either side smoke. I could not only hear them walk throughout their unit, I could smell what they cooked, when they smoked (and I'm not just talking cigarettes). When I called management, they said that there was nothing they could do. I understand this is a common problem - everything permeates through the walls - smells, sounds, etc. 8. And last but not least, there have been 3 break-ins including my unit. read more

We have been there 6 months now and have nothing but positive things to say Its a well designed community that works really well. The apartments and landscaping are attractive, parking plentiful, great gym, swimming pool and common area grills. Very dog and kid friendly, quiet and a four minute walk to the Hingham commuter ferry. We had a couple of maintenance issues which were handled quickly. The staff (Jacy) and company are friendly and professional. Its been a pleasure living here. read more
