If you find yourself in Greenwich, and want to pay NYC prices for fresh food, stop by Debra Ponzek's cafe. This location may be her first. I've always liked their hazelnut coffee, and today met my standard. The White Meat Green Goddess chicken salad offered small pieces of chicken in a dressing that surprised you with bits of tarragon and watercress. I didn't closely read the label of the chickpea side salad and was pleasantly surprised by the Roquefort cheese. It provided a tang to an otherwise "to be expected" side. The portions are small, yet together the two made a perfect meal. Most everything is self service and the empty hazelnut carafe was quickly replaced. The staff had few smiles to share, and maybe the gray day was the reason. Given that it's Greenwich, the staff may have been tired by an exhausting clientele. Sitting outside to eat and read is lovely, and there are tables with umbrellas that can handle quite a few for lunch. read more

I love Aux Delices. I am a frequent guest at the Downtown Greenwich location and rarely stop by into the Riverside location. I was in Riverside over the weekend with a friend and had the delicious chicken tortilla soup. It was so flavorful! I was surprised it was as rich as it was. Beware getting anything that's been premade or sitting out in the glass displays. I've gotten sick here right after eating their food when it was in those little glass windows. If it's made fresh or prepped by the kitchen, I usually fair better. They've also forgotten on more than one occasion what specific requests I made for my sandwich, so that's a little upsetting. So, A-Ok if I get something that the kitchen cooks. Not so much if it's been sitting behind the refrigerated display glasses. Their service also leaves much to be desired. I love Aux Delices on Elm St - the service is great, sadly the same can't be same for this location in Riverside. There is one gentleman who works the counter here and I've now had two bad experiences with him. He doesn't make the salad samplers correctly- the container was barely filled with a tasting of each salad but I only noticed once I had left. Today, I was standing at the counter of prepAred foods behind the only other customer in the store at the time who was ordering- a line formed while I waited and the gentles insisted I go to the other part of the store to the back of the line. I like to consider myself good in the kitchen but my pasta making skills are just mediocre, the chef made it entertaining and made sure we all were hands on. The counter staff may honestly be the worst and consistently Rudest service I have experienced in North America! To make matters more amusing,I'm not sure the owners know how incredulously rude the counter folk are, because they have now added extra tall food containers So that one can not even see them as they yell up at you insisting you order, etc! Having visited Aux Delices regularly for at least 7 years, the number of lack lustre reviews is rather surprising. Perhaps it has to do with the volume of business and that less favorable reviews are more likely to get written than favorable. Does the food send my taste buds dancing? Some does. Much does not. But what brings me back here year after year is the consistency and dependability. First, I love their coffee (not a Starbucks fan). And the food is all good. Some things are great. But I have never had anything bad or stall or soggy here. Often, I am having a late lunch, and even the pre-made sandwiches are good. Their turkey meatloaf is the best in town, to my taste. I have also attended functions catered by Aux Delices. Now most of that food DOES get my taste buds dancing! Have been to Riverside, Greenwich, and Darien locations. They are always clean, and staff is friendly and happy to make you a "custom" order (I usually make my own panini). Some of the pre-made/hot food items have been really good and others (like the chicken and potatoes) tasted average, which was a little disappointing for the price. Although I have been coming here for years every time I'm in Connecticut, I wonder if I'll be back to this location after today. the counter staff was so rude that I almost turned around and left but my sister and I were both hungry so we decided to order sandwiches. When we inquired about the ingredients in one of the sandwiches, the counter girl said "it's right there on the menu just read it". then we ordered our sandwiches but my sister's came out missing two of the ingredients that she had asked for. When she asked them to please put it on the girl said "well you have to pay for it" to which my sister said "no problem I'll pay for it, but I had requested on my sandwich to begin with, and by the way the girl who took my order was extremely rude". That girl -Nancy- who was going to fix this error said "well I'll teach her so just don't worry about it", also in a rather snippy way. That is just no way to treat a paying customer and especially for the prices that they charge -for good food but it's really not worth the price with the abuse that you get from the counter staff. This is the first time I have not left a tip in a restaurant in a very long time. The man at the counter also remarked "we're all having a bad day". The food here is fresh and consistent. Some dishes are good to great, others are just mediocre. They have a great selection overall, and the salads are all worthwhile. Many of the assorted salads behind the display seem carb-heavy, like cous cous and quinoa, and don't suit my current regiment. A few more vegetable choices would be appealing. The salmon with pepper chutney would have been very good, had the fish not tasted mildly freezer burnt. The brussel sprout and apple salad is excellent, as is the tuna salad, but the overload of capers adds too much salt. The coffee is excellent, and the seating is sufficient despite the consistent lunch crowd bustle. They have additional seating upstairs, adjacent to a gallery, and outdoor seating in the warmer months. The prices at Aux Delices can be steep depending on what you order, but food is fresh and selection abundant. Like the other reviewer, I was tempted by the $7 cube of fudge they display at the register. I declined after hearing the price. The only glaring problem here is the service. The folks behind the counter are quite rude and rush you to order. They are not helpful in explaining the dishes, and will ignore you if you do not push your way past the 10 other patrons waiting to order. read more
