This is the first review I've ever written and I'm not doing it because I owe Joe a favor. I'm not…read moredoing it because we're family. In fact, I have only lived in the Portland area for a couple years now, so I have no history with this area at all. I'm writing this review because if you're like me, then you don't know the first thing about mechanics, but you still don't want to get ripped off. This is where Joe comes in. The transmission on my car was acting funny (slipping gears) and then finally one day while I was driving home, the car downshifted and got stuck in 3rd gear. I was convinced I was going to have to buy a new transmission, so I began calling around for quotes. I didn't know about Joe's Auto Service until the guy at the local auto parts store recommended him as a good "transmission guy". I took my car to Joe, told him it needed a new transmission (costing around $3,000-$5,000). He hooked up a diagnostic tool to the car, took a reading, drove the car around the block, took me into his shop, ran some numbers and came back with an estimate of roughly $450. He told me it was a sensor that went bad that was causing all the trouble and it didn't need a new transmission. Starting to see why I gave him 5 stars? He fixed the sensor and the transmission has worked perfectly ever since (about a year). Whenever you find a mechanic that tells you your car doesn't need the more expensive fix, it needs the cheaper one, you've found yourself a mechanic worth hanging on to. Joe has worked on my car since that time (fixed a bad seal) and he will continue to be the one I go to whenever my car needs to be worked on. If you're on the fence about whether or not he's your guy, go in and talk to him face to face. If he seems untrustworthy or incapable of fixing your vehicle, go somewhere else. Trust me, you won't be going anywhere else.
