I stopped in very pressed for time, and Ayden got my truck in very quickly to check the brakes. The torx head rotor bolt had come loose causing a grinding when stepping on the brakes. He snugged it up and had me on my way lickety split! To top it off he said, "we don't charge for inspections". I was blown away. Kim was as nice as could be too. Never trying to upsell on repairs that aren't required and taking the time to fully explain and document each and every charge and detail. Bill at Auto Surgeon was very clear in explaining their cost estimate and the potential outcomes and conveyed the sense that what I wanted to do may just not be worth the cost. I appreciated the sound advice and honesty. The cost for the inspection and diagnostics was very reasonable and identified some things the local dealership had missed; so it was well worth the time and expense. As this was my first time trying Auto Surgeon, I was very glad to find a shop with good standards and well rated by other customers. So I expect I will give them a try again when another need comes up. UPDATE: 3rd time using Auto Surgeon now (Oct '22) and wishing I had given them a try years earlier. My car brakes had a grinding issue I was concerned about, so I took it to Auto Surgeon based on the great reviews. They promptly called me and told me the situation, and that I actually didn't have to do anything to the car quite yet. I was so thrilled!! Called and the person I spoke with refused to give me a quote for how much an inspection would cost over the phone. Said it "might be $150" but that he couldn't say for sure. Not sure why an inspection should have a varying price. I'm not going to bring my car in for an inspection where you can decide what you'll charge me after you've already done it and I have no choice but to pay whatever price you decide on the spot. read more

PROS They did a good job repairing my car. They also did an overview of items that may need to be replaced in the near future. These were things that were not as important at the time, but good to know! They were fast and did not pressure me to fix EVERYTHING right now, just what I chose. CONS They are expensive! If you are strapped for cash I would recommend looking at other places. Their labor costs were as expected, but the part cost was outrageous! They charged me over 550 in parts that I could have bought at Auto Zone for a little less than 300. Overall I am pleased with my repaired car. read more

I only had an oil change done, so I can't speak to their mechanical abilities, but what I can say is this establishment is honest. To me that's the most important quality in my local shop. This is how I know they're honest: Some last minute plans required me to drive my girlfriend's car to CA, and I know she does not do regular maintenance at the prescribed intervals, and the car sounded to me like it was making a strange noise. I have some basic car knowledge, but I wanted it checked out by a professional. Bill (owner) recommended a trip inspection where they inspect every major component for safety. I would never normally walk into a shop and say, tell me if there's anything wrong with this car, bc it's just asking to be ripped off if you're mechanic is anything less than honest. A lot of mechanics will MAKE SURE there's something wrong, whether there is or not. But I figured it was more of a gamble to drive this car 3,000 miles at 75mph than to maybe get ripped off. Bill had the car checked out, called me back, and said there is basically nothing wrong with the car! When does that ever happen?! It was overdue for oil, so he did the change, and then told me it needed a few other small things and said "I figured you want to change those yourself instead of paying me to do it". The only thing he really didn't like was the crappy Chinese tires put on by Carmax, and he spent time at the counter researching the best place to replace them once I got to CA! He also gave me some good ol' fashioned tips on finding a good mechanic, etc. Sorry for writing a novel, but I believe Bill went above and beyond for even a small job, and a good review is the least I could do. I've been taking my car to Auto Surgeon for the last 6+ years. They are always honest and thorough. The first time I took a car there it was towed after breaking down on the freeway. Auto Surgeon told me it would cost more to fix than the car was worth after they did lots of research about getting a new engine. After all that they didn't charge me for labor. What I appreciate most is that I never feel spoken down to. They respect the little knowledge I have of cars and offer to explain the issue. I have a very good mechanic that I trust in my home town (Kalamazoo). But I had a serious issue when I was in Lansing, and had to find a trustworthy and reliable place to take my car for what could be a very expensive fix, just so I could get home. I called Auto Surgeon and they got me in that morning. I described the problem, and they listened, asked a few more questions, and proposed a plan of action. They called me promptly when they found the problem, and gave me enough information to talk to my "primary care mechanic" to figure out a strategy. Bottom line is that I am able to get home, with a car that works, and I am informed and able to make good decisions about my car. Probably not the cheapest in town, but trust is worth something. If I lived in Lansing, these guys would be my primary care mechanics. It takes a village, even when you're out of town. Very glad I found them! read more

I NEVER WRITE REVIEWS. But I wanted to wait a few months to write a review, just so I didn't jinx myself or my car. But I've never had such a good experience with my car here. I was calling around to different shops for a certain part, and AutoSurgeon had the best price. Not only were they $200-300 cheaper, but they got me in the same day, and even gave me a ride back to work. It was in and out within just a few hours and after 3 years of issues with my car not starting randomly, violently shaking, going into "reduced-power mode" they were certain it was my throttle body. They switched it out, programmed it and it has been running like a brand new car for over 2 months now.I will be taking my car here with any further issues I have, thanks to Bill and his staff. We had our car towed to Auto Surgeon as it wouldn't start one extremely cold day. We were charged $100 for a "diagnosis" that the mechanic wasn't "even sure of" and couldn't tell us that it wasn't in need of just a simple alternator repair and didn't actually "know what to do with the car." We were also given a quote totaling almost $800 for a simple repair of a neutral safety switch which is typically a part that costs $80-$200 but would cost Auto Surgeon (us) almost $500 for just the part. Not being able to afford the $800 repair, we decided to forgo the repair, went to get the vehicle, and it started right up (still had to pay $100 for basically nothing). read more
