I was in Long Beach with my mother while visiting her significant other. I needed a few piercings fixed in my ear. I entered tattoo shops on my Apple Maps and they popped up. When I called, the guy who answered (Eli) was extremely nice, warm and welcoming. I liked his vibe and felt his authenticity over the phone and that's what made me choose them. When we arrived Shellsea was extremely friendly, educating, patient and very gentle. I didn't feel a thing! The whole vibe in the shop felt like a family reunion! She even helped my mom's boyfriend. I have over 30 tattoos, various shapes and sizes. Out of these tattoos 90% have been from this shop (including coverups & new art). Been going here for years and have not realized Ive never left this place a review! Such a bad customer haha. I just send people because they're that good. I started off with a strict theme for my tattoos and the more I started coming to this tattoo shop, I eventually became a "collector". Meaning I have now gone to ALMOST every artist for art work and not just one artist. My main artist is Ben, first and foremost. However; I show my support by getting work done from other artists there. Every time i am there everyone is very friendly, vibes are positive, quality of work is top tier. If you aren't happy with something they do not charge to fix it within 30 days. Everyone including the customers are super friendly and very relaxed place to be. The apprentices are the best of the best. They are very generous, patient, attentive & extremely welcoming. All artists are phenomenal and excel on their specialties! I was greeted with water/coffee. You name it. I speak highly of these guys because they love what they do and always exceed expectation. Can't forget to mention how clean the place is. They take very high pride in keeping work stations cleansed, sanitized and organized. They wipe after every sitting, they take care of there's. The first love of my life, my nephew and godson, Jesse, had written me a note when he was 8 (1995) saying I was his favorite aunt, and of course I had kept the original all these years! July 2013, I had that note tattooed on me 4 days after Jesse was killed. He was only 26! To say this note was priceless is an understatement, which meant this tattoo was just as valuable. After several years, the letters started to blend together and the note was no longer legible. Someone in Colorado had attempted to fix it by outlining the words in white......no help!!! My girl and close friend of Jesse, Shellsea Kit, recommended I come down to the shop, and said if anyone could bring this tat back, it would be Mark Moss! BUT.....he's booked solid few months out so..... Mark not only listened to my story, he embraced it as his own! Before I left, he mapped out the "Tattoo Restoration", knew Jesse's birthday was a few weeks away, and managed to get me in 2 days before his birthday! Mark became family that day, restored my tattoo to original form so I wouldn't have to spend another minute looking at illegible writing, and gained a fan for life!!! I love this place, the artists, and their work. I came to Shellsea with a sigil drawn up by a dear friend and I'm so, so happy with how it turned out. She recommended I get the sigil done on both shins and was super accommodating and took her time with the placement so that it would sit evenly despite the fact that a previous injury made it a challenge. Her linework is super solid and I will definitely be getting more in the future. My advice for painful areas? I had my full sleeve/chest piece completed here over the course of three years. Different parts of my arm per year. My artist Ben is awesome. I left it up to him on what to design from the start leaving just some things I wanted incorporated. He went above and beyond what I wanted. I love the sleeve piece he has completed for me. When I walked in this shop for the first time it smelled like weed and the artists were making a stop to get alcohol during business hours. I got my first tattoo here so I thought this was normal for a tattoo shop. I asked the artist Shellsea if she could do a realistic moon tattoo on my wrist. She confidently said she could do that for me. I noticed she didn't really sketch the moon out and I made a comment about that. Shellsea said she didn't need to sketch it out. After a few minutes of nervously tattooing the moon, she said I needed to come back for a second appointment. I was then offered a shot of alcohol which I politely declined. I'll post a picture of the tattoo I received along with the touch up session I received 3 weeks after by the owner of the shop. The owner of the shop refused to sketch out the moon or add details of the moon that were missing when I pointed that out during the session. I asked for a refund, however, they refused to give me one. I hate leaving bad reviews but I had no choice in this scenario. The full names of the artists I went to at this shop are Shellsea Kitt and the owner of the tattoo shop Ben Sua Mene. I hope they both respect their clients wishes in the future and take the time to fully sketch out their art before starting to tattoo on someone's skin. I'm in the process of removing/covering up this tattoo and it is a painful and expensive process. No one deserves to pay $100 for this tattoo and not be refunded. read more

Ooookay this has been a long time coming. Got a Tinker Bell tattoo from a guy named Jesse....not trying to get anyone trouble, but I definitely need my tattoo fixed. I came here last year for the Friday the 13th special....July 13th 2018....almost a year now. Anyway....I liked that the place had a system for the crazy day ahead. I got there around 1-2pm and was told they would call me back if I didn't want to wait the 4-5 hours. Perfect! The two people that were at the counter were polite and helpful. When I didn't get a call back after 5 hours they said they were JUST about to call....I got there 10 minutes later with my 2x2 Tinker Bell example printed out...which was a big help considering the chaos that happens in Tat shops on a Friday the 13th, but not that big of a help because about an hour later is when they finally connected me with Jesse. Not complaining it was a busy day and 1 hour of standing is nothing compared to the 5 I sat at home and waited. I meet Jesse....not very personable, but that's cool I didn't come for a friend I came for an artist right? When I get to his station he has an open beer can and another one....bigger....lined up waiting to be opened and sipped next I guess....I don't judge.... quiet Jesse puts the stencil on....its lines are smudged....I ask if he wants to redo it....he says No I know what Tinker Bell looks like this is enough for me to see the basics....okay!.....as soon as he starts he digs into my skin......sigh......as I watch him tat I am wondering why the lines are pointy...why the lines are really thin in some places of her arm and thicker elsewhere....as the lining is complete I mention to him it's looking kinda funny.....he backs up to get a full view and from the look on his face I could tell HE knew he Fucked up.....sigh.....he asks for the picture and without acknowledging the obvious fuck ups on the lines he tries to fix them....this is where I should've stopped him....I didn't.....sigh....I was trying to be a good client as I'd like to find a regular artist, I have many tats and understand what artists go through especially on days like this. When he is done I try to convince myself it'll heal and look nicer. NOPE! After complaining to enough people that see the tat I was told I need to write a review regardless of the time frame as this is on me for life. Next tat I'll make sure to not be so nice about it....I have full rights to check the artist NO MATTER WHAT! So there it is my very disappointing experience at Authentic Roots...sigh. read more
