There was more disappointment than Delight here. A friend's got the sour dumplings, which was the same broth as my noodles with duck meat, except in order to make it sour I believe some vinegar was added. My broth was tasty but nothing out of this world. Both the soup dumplings and the fried dumplings or disappointments to my friends, who said that the meat and chive mixture was pretty bland. Food is Good, Service is Better We really love the "little eats" here such as the "Chinese hamburger" and the handmade dumplings (hard to find in Philly). There's a lot of love and effort that goes into the food of this place. This is one of my wife's favorites as her family is from the same region of China so it's the same food she grew up eating (this is a big deal if you understand Chinese culture). We typically come here once every 2-3 weeks or so but we always get the same thing as the wife craves the nostalgia. As someone who doesn't have the nostalgia, I still really like the food but I really love the service. The people run into at the counter are some of the nicest Chinatown workers we've run into. I also got the hand drawn noodles the other day to change things up. While I think I prefer Nanzhou Hand Drawn Noodles on Race, my wife and sister both liked this place better because you can tell there's more skill into making this dish here - there's a lot less MSG so a lot more time and energy to make it taste good without that flavoring so it's really a matter of preference (and a piece of life advice, avoid MSG if you can - but do as I say, not as I do!). read more

Solid noodle spot in Chinatown! The reviews for a lot of authentic Chinese places are focused on things like friendliness and swanky restrooms, but these just aren't the focus sometimes. Fu qi fei pian aka cold beef tripe is my favorite app and this place does it well. Noodles warm and big portions, chewy with that hand pulled texture, and lots of oxtail (meaty portions too) were included in my meal. Apps are big enough and priced well to share. So let me add to the mixed reviews. I love the Lam Zhou style of noodle and frequent a place in Manhattan Chinatown. These noodles aren't great but aren't bad. Dumplings again are fine. Sour soup dumplings (not soup dumplings but dumplings in soup) seem to be the same but with vinegar in the sauce. Sliced beef was good. I got the brisket and that was solid as well. Unless they mixed it up. So all in all, I'd give it a 3.5. I would try other places in the area. Is it better than your Americanized Chinese? A million times yes, but I have to rate it against what it is. read more

I want to know what this business REALLY sells because no way can they make rent at a prime location by selling sucky food. I was headed to Spice C but it was closed on Wednesdays so I searched for "hand drawn noodles" and found this place. With a name so promising, I decided to test my luck. Oh man the hand drawn seafood noodles' broth was so bland, not much flavor. Noodles were good texture but the clams had sand/shells chunks hitting your teeth, didn't taste fresh. There's no pickled mustard greens like authentic hand drawn noodles usually have. Fried dumplings do not look as advertised. It's very doughy and fillings lack flavor. Disappointed. Well they do have 2 good qualities - good service and cheap pricing. But if the food isn't good, that can't bring back customers. We randomly walked in without any expectations. We got a lamb soup noodle, a pork bun, a cold meat dish and a stew thing served in a stone pot. We have to say the flavor is really good, we loved the Chinese hamburger (pork with bun) so much, it's super affordable and really authentic. Crispy bun with flavorful and juicy meat. The noodle soups were great for a dark cold night, they warm you up with authentic feeling of northwestern Chinese cuisine. I think if you're going to go here and not ordering the shaved noodles with beef broth, you're doing it wrong. It's really good and close to what you'd get in China. Also, the prices are great. Cash only I think tho. Went here with my family who's from the region and tried a lot of things from the menu. The noodle soup is pretty great and I think the shaved noodles are better than the pulled noodles because it has a bit more bite and an interesting texture. What you get is a pretty straight forward soup and you can add vinegar or chili oil to punch it up slightly. Other stuff: The Chinese hamburger is braised meat in a flour arepa style bread. There's a couple of weird porridges you could try if you're adventurous. Dumplings might be different than the most common types of dumplings at most restaurants, so it'll taste different. This place is two blocks from the convention center and Jefferson Station. They actually open at 8:00, offering some typical Chinese breakfast dishes (congee, etc). This review is based on lunch time. I had beef tendon noodle soup (sliced tendon so soft that pieces melted in the mouth, not the usual chunks), cucumber salad with garlic (cucumber dices with pieces of garlic, no sesame oil), and dumplings (pork and napa). Everything was very authentic and tasteful. The noodles had the elasticity that you find from handmade pasta. The soup was very rich and the bowl was big. The dumplings were good and the price was half of what you would find in California. I agree with the other reviews that service needs improvement. Whether you speak in Chinese or English, they could be more helpful and courteous. There were two waitresses and one was working most of the time. Minus one star... They only accept cash. ******* I went back for a breakfast this morning. 5 stars! They offer this healthy pumpkin congee (they say that the congee made by Cantonese is too salty and it very likely contains MSG). Theirs have a natural flavor from pumpkin and millet. I've always heard about these "Chinese burgers" but have never seen it on a menu in Philly and was excited to try it. For those who are unfamiliar these so called "burgers" are just steamed rice buns stuffed with a braised meat (beef, pork or lamb...this place didn't offer a choice though). It's then grilled a bit, kind of like a panini, to give it some structure. For my first time eating this, I thought it was ok. The meat wasn't super seasoned so I ended up adding chili oil, soy sauce and a touch of black vinegar which made it taste much better! My husband thought his oxtail noodle soup was ok - nothing spectacular. The last dish to come out was the pork and chive dumplings. These were the worst things I have ever eaten. The filling tasted like cardboard. I couldn't even finish one. After we had had enough, we wanted to just get our check and pay...well server #1 was too busy watching TV to even notice us...for a very long time! Doesn't look like much when you walk past but I was starving and looking for something filling so I went with this place when I got to Chinatown. I got the lamb stew noodle soup and wow it was soooo good and authentic, felt like I was back in China. The noodles were perfect, the flavor was spot on and the meat was so tender and cooked to perfection. By far the best lamb noodle soup I've had in years. I am surprised at the mixed reviews, as I think this place is great. I love their shaved noodles - they are delicious! Their chow mein has so many fresh veggies, and the tofu is delicious (great for me, as I am a vegetarian). Service has always been very attentive. And the best part? Only about $8 for a huge plate of fresh, delicious food. I can (usually) stretch it into two meals. My boyfriend loves the meat dishes. This restaurant is a nightmare, their cashier is a total b----. Do not recommend. Here's my story. I am traveling to another country on the second day, so all I had is a credit card on me. When I told the cashier about that, she starts to get contemptuous on me. It was something like "you sure you can pay with that card?" "you have money in that card?" This may be the worst restaurant meal of my life. Ordered brisket ramen. Noodles were tasteless and the broth was greasy and tasted way too strongly of cilantro. But the meat was the worst. All gristle, vessels, and connective tissue. Literally inedible. When I complained to waitress she argued with me. Also had Chinese hamburger-dull and tasteless. Same with chive dumplings. Service was slow and bad. Was seated near the kitchen and every time the door opened got a whiff of alley/garbage smell.
