James Miller Room - Ten layers of Valrohna

As we were staying at Turnberry for a friend's wedding, we decided to add on an extra night and…read morecelebrate our wedding anniversary. There are two restaurants to choose from - the James Miller Room and 1906. We went for the James Miller Room as their 4 course menu looked really interesting and unusual. When we arrived, I was a little surprised at the size of the room. It's described on the website as intimate and I'd definitely agree as it only seats 10 people. It's just next to the main dining area of 1906 so you can still peer into the restaurant (if you really want to). Even though the room was small, it wasn't cramped and you couldn't hear the other tables conversations (unless they were talking loudly and you were eavesdropping!) Service here was the same exceptionally high standard as the rest of Turnberry; friendly, pleasant and chatty without being stuffy or pretentious. When we looked over the menu it had changed from the one online a little and I actually squealed when I saw a starter 'banh mi' - one of my favourite foods! This was obviously a fine dining version consisting of head cheese, foie gras and pickled vegetables. Graeme went for the St Brides Chicken Curry. I really loved my banh mi, and to be honest I would have been over the moon if it was the main, not the starter as it was the kind of dish I didn't want to end. I had a taste of the chicken curry one I'd finished it as I could smell the spices and I knew it'd be very strong tasting! It was, but not in the firey way I expected. For main I had West Coast lobster with carrot, fennel and granola and Graeme had the rabbit with boudin blanc and pomme fondant. Again, these dishes really impressed both in appearance and taste. I really loved the strong, meaty flavour of the sauce with the rabbit and we got extra bread rolls to mop up the left over juice. Then we moved onto the cheese course - Scottish artisan cheeses. Presented in a tower with truffle and jelly and some crispy bread, this was really delicious and a real winner. We were then invited into the kitchen to meet the head chef, Justin Galea. I was pretty excited about this as I love going "backstage" of restaurants and Justin is from Melbourne, my hometown. We ended up talking for ages and it was great to hear about the focus on local foods, some foraging and keeping a calm, positive vibe in the kitchen. We also got to see the chef's table which I really want to do - they design a menu for you on the day and you get to see the action. I had the Posset for dessert - raspberry, nuts and lemon while Graeme went for Ten Layers of Valrohna with pistachio icecream. His was rich and decadent, too strong for me but right up his alley. The posset had a really refreshing tang which finished off the meal nicely. All up, this was a lovely experience and a real treat for a special occasion. The four course menu was £65 per person, and we also shared a half bottle of wine for around £30.

The Drift Inn - Superb mussels, and that's the starter pot.

A five-star view, with caveats…read more First off the Drift Inn is without a doubt the best place to eat and drink in Lamlash. We've tried the competition and frankly the Drift has the best beer and Scotch selection, food, and atmosphere. Inside it's a restaurant, outside it's a country pub with lots of well-spaced outdoor seating. It has the basics food-wise down pat. Huge fish and chips and excellent mussels - in the latter case just the right size between tasty and chewy. A great wine and beer selection and excellent service. The one down side was an overly-promised starter. Spending 15 quid on a few tiny bits of food artfully arranged stuck in the craw somewhat. But what the hell, they're nice people and the rest of it was superb.

I loved this pub and the food was probably the best we had on Arran. It's in the lovely town of Lamlash and really easy to find. We parked along the road and then walked down as we were there quite early and it didn't open til midday. There's a beautiful view over the water to Holy Isle and you can get a ferry over if you're so inclined - we decided to just appreciate it from afar. The pub itself is kind of nautical/rugby themed and really cosy inside - there's a fireplace and lots of seating as well as some couches and a kids area. I ordered a bowl of Cullen Skink (Scottish haddock soup) as well as the Angler's Platter for one (Creeler's hot and cold smoked salmon, seafood and soft cheese mousse, fishcake and homemade bread). The soup was just delicious - I don't eat Cullen Skink enough and when I have one as good as this, I wonder why - thick, jam packed with fish and really tasty. I loved the platter too - the fish cake was the highlight for sure, but everything on it was so tasty and I loved how local it all was. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed grazing here for a while. They have a great booze selection but as I was driving I didn't have any - next time we visit I would definitely see about getting the bus or a taxi here from Brodick so we could get stuck into the gin! Note: they have gluten free bread, breadcumb and batters are available upon request.

Everyone was super nice, friendly and efficient. Ordered the lamb dinner, and beef short ribs. Both dishes were cooked to perfection. Got a Romanian red wine--never had Romanian wine before, but it was good. Great atmosphere, cute restaurant--loved the whisky display! We also went to their sister restaurant around the corner, Kelp. Amazing seafood! Same situation: it was crowded, we didn't have reservations, but they made room for us. Kelp was definitely a highlight of the food in Scotland. Beyond excellent! If you are in Glasgow, I would highly recommend both places.

There's options around 15£ but typical plates are 20-35£. We were so hungry we forgot to take dinner pics; we had the Slow Braised Short Rib (uh-freakin-mazing!!) the Chicken Breast (juicy & cuts with a fork) and the Venison Stew (tasted like Filet). Drinks were delightful. Service was stellar (and they were FULLY booked on a Thursday at 8pm; but we shared the 2 tiny hi-top tables near the bar and had an amazing dinner). Dessert was worth going for all on it's own!

What a little jewel I found!…read more The Mill Inn is located in Coulter 5 min down the road from Biggar and 45 min from Edinburgh. It is easy to find as it is pretty much the only restaurant/bar in that area. It also has its own beer garden and in the summer this must be a plus. I believe that this building was once an old Mill and you might think so from the name it got today :-) Inside the floor is covered with typical Scottish designed red carpet, dark furnishing, wooden benches and beams. There is no doubt the restaurant downstairs has its charms. On the other side of the room, away from the dining tables there is a small bar with lots of different whiskey choices. Upstairs you will find additional seating and a small whisky bar with lots of different whiskey's on offer and for sale. The most expensive one costs £1500 Highland Park and last week they sold a £3000 special edition of some sort. No worries, you can also buy affordable whiskey from well known brands. Our voucher deal offered a starter and main course for a very good price. We ordered Shrimp salad and baked brie as a starter. The brie was soft and filling (you get two pieces), served with cranberry sauce. There was no brie spared. As a main we ordered Chicken Fajitas and it came with 3 sauces (salsa, sour cream, guacamole). Not only this, the chicken was served still on a hot plate, sizzling in delicious spices hot and mild, garnished with peppers and onions and a delicious sauce of some sort, which made the taste even more delicious. We also decided on coffee and with it they served a small piece of fudge, which was such a nice gesture. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. It is a very busy place and best you book a table before turning up unannounced. I will be back ! Whoop

One of the worst dinner services I've had in a LONG time…read more The food was barely mediocre. My lemon sole, a special of the day, was utterly tasteless, and didn't have the slightest hint of lemon. Not even a lemon wedge. And it was raw in the middle. Yuck! The worst part of our experience was the absolutely horrendous service, which was so incredibly slow that it was obnoxious. Waitresses buzzed past our table in their hurry to other tables, while we sat for an eternity. The only explanation I can think of is that my husband is Black, and we've encountered this issue before at restaurants. In any case, the service was downright inexcusable. I wouldn't ever go back.
