Just got the 11-year-old baby back from the yearly overhaul and prep for state inspection. Once again, AVD gave us excellent and honest service. I will not trust my Passat to anyone else. When/if I do decide to part ways with the dear baby (first and only brand new car I've ever purchased)(made me fall in love with VWs), it's very likely I'll get another VW (*slams head against wall in frustration*)(why in the H are these cars like crack?). And when/if this likelihood happens, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be bringing it to AVD for all services. Shout out to Darryl. Awesome dude. They're all great guys at AVD. I've been taking my car to these guys for about a year and a half and they are great. For example, on one occasion, they were able to repair a broken light assembly for about $250 that would have cost more than $1000 for the dealership to replace. Another time they charged me almost nothing to fix a malfunctioning sensor on my convertible top. Yet another time, I called and described my problem and they told me to take it to the dealer because they thought it would be covered by a recall and be fixed for free (which it was!). These guys are straight up honest and great to deal with. Also, as others have mentioned, they are on the way to the airport and will give you a ride to the airport after you drop off your car. They are the nicest auto repair guys I've ever seen. We had some problem with a radiator and could not pass an inspection due to this problem. With only a few days left before the vehicle license renewal, they took us in, fixed on time, and even gave a ride to DMV on a rainy day so that we could do everything on time! Awesome people! I do not understand the positive reviews for here at all. I took my boyfriend's 2000 VW Golf in for some random, miscellaneous repairs in Jan/Feb 2011 so it could pass inspection. First off, the customer service was terrible and no one that worked there was friendly. The man helping me explained the repairs in a condescending manner which I found offensive- I was trying to learn about the car so I could take better care of it, but was just talked down to. I did not know the repairs would take 6 to 7 hours and there was nowhere to buy lunch nearby, so I ended up being incredibly hungry for almost the whole time I was there. If I had known how long the repairs wold take and the lack of food places around, I would have either brought lunch or had someone drop me off. The car did finally pass inspection after the work was done, which is the only reason I gave them 2 stars. However, the car was also making a popping noise when it turned. I asked about this and they said it was some part of the bumper hitting the wheel. They could not have been more wrong- what should have been a simple CV boot replacement for a few hundred dollars ended up turning into almost $1500 of work to replace the CV boot, axle, bushings, and tie rod assembly. I now go to Kenny Hill's because they have good customer service and actually fixed the car. In sum, they were rude and they gave me completely wrong information for what should have been routine maintenance on a car with high mileage. I have to go there soon to get something from the junkyard, but will never take it there for repairs again if I have any choice in the matter. read more

I've driven VW's for a while now - the last several cars I've owned were VW's, and I've grown attached to them. This means I've also been forced to acknowledge that they have issues and need repair. Enter my recently purchased used Jetta who decided, spontaneously, to surpise me with a locked-up tensioner that melted my serpentine belt and then promptly exploded, sending jagged shards into my radiator. (I learned this battlefield analysis after having it towed to the garage) It's hard to put my finger on exactly how to present this review. For the most part my experience with Austin VeeDub was a good one, and I briefly outline why it was...and why some parts weren't: Pros: The service team - they know their VW's and knew exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned the issues my Jetta. They were friendly and a solid group of guys. Cons: The office staff, the length of time it took to have information provided about my car, and the nit-picky wait I had picking it up. I arrived on a Saturday morning to grab my car after learning that the somewhat pricey repair had all but tripled due to the previously mentioned radiator issue and it took almost an entire week to receive updates (most calls made to them were made by me asking about my cars status) and for the final repairs to be made. When I arrived there were no other customers - and the office was empty. Two people sat behind the counter, one of which I assume was only the parts guy and ignored me completely, while the other chatted on the phone to someone about parts for a VW van, ignoring me completely. I politely waited...and waited. Ten minutes past and he finally put down the phone - no apology was given for the wait, and he practically demanded to know what I wanted. When I asked for my car he vaguely found my file and seemed completely disinterested in the process, despite the fact I was dropping the equivalent of an entire paycheck for me on repairs. He called for the car to be brought out and I went to discuss the repair with Adam (?) in service. Before I left my car I'd provided a serpentine belt (purchased when I attemped to fix the issue myself) and told them it was in the back seat. I learned it wasn't used, but Adam (?) was extremely helpful and explained they would give me a credit if I was unable to return the belt. Satisfied, I went outside to wait for my car. And waited. And waited. Ten minutes later Adam saw I'd been standing outside for a while and came out to apologize and let me know they had to move some other vehicles first. The gentleman (didn't catch this guys name) they'd asked to get my car said he was doing it and disappeared. I waited again. And waited. He reappeared, but not with my car - he was talking with another customer and laughing and talking while he helped the new guy who'd arrived at least twenty minutes after I'd been told my car was being pulled out. Almost a half an hour after I'd paid for my car it was finally pulled around and I was able to go. I was satisfied with the repairs and despite the bumps in communications, I was satisfied with how my car was handled...but I didn't appreciate the 'tude from the office or the excessive waiting when there weren't any other customers. I will likely return with my car (knock on wood) if needing repairs, but I'll likely be more blunt about it. read more

I feel like this review will be preaching to the choir after all of these other great reviews, but Austin VeeDub deserves another 5 stars all the same. I could go on and on about the details, but to make a long story short, not only did Darryl save me over $800, but I left so impressed that I will never go anywhere else for service on my vehicle from now on, just from this one experience. After TWO other shops told me that I needed to replace my alternator on my 03 Jetta (both quoted me upwards of $800 for parts and service), I called up Austin VeeDub and got transferred to Darryl. Against all "smart shopping around" sense, I told Darryl what the other shops had told me and he said to come by so he could take a look. I was expecting to set up some sort of appointment, but Darryl said I could come right away (awesome) so I did. I literally drove up, met Darryl, he immediately popped my hood right in front of me and went to work. (awesome x 2) He tested the alternator and did confirm that it was failing, but then poked around for a couple minutes and discovered that some screw(?) needed tightening. He tightened it, tested again, and it PASSED. He insisted that he would not feel right telling me to replace the alternator from what he had seen. This was over a month ago and I have had no problems to this day. That being said, I don't think the other shops were TRYING to rip me off, but I do think that Darryl was just WAAAAY better at his job than any of those schmoes. Whilst under the hood, I also asked about my air filter. He took a look and said it was terribly filthy and should be replaced. He did it right then and it cost $18. (awesome x 3). I also asked about my check engine light being on... once again, he plugged in a computer and did a test right then and there. Said it was my glow plugs and that there was really no reason to replace them living in a climate like Austin where it's always warm, when he easily could have just said "Yep, you need to replace your glow plugs. It costs $XX." All in all, I probably spent about half an hour there. So when I went to pay, I was expecting some labor charges, perhaps even fees for the "testing", etc etc. which I would have been happy to pay. NOPE. Darryl charged me $18 for the air filter. THAT'S IT. (awesome x infinity). Needless to say, when something actually DOES go wrong and needs replacing, I know exactly where I'm going. read more

You know the story: Girl walks into the mechanic shop and her wallet gets taken for a ride. That is NOT the case here. I can not recommend these guys enough. It's not much from the outside, but do not let that fool you. These guys have been around for a long time and they KNOW their stuff. They are also the nicest people. I've used them a couple of times, one for body work and just today for a tune up/to check out the light that has been on for months in my VW Cabrio. I called at 10:30 and they told me to come on down. They have always been INCREDIBLY honest and straightforward with me telling me what NEEDS to be done, and what can wait a while. They always give you the option of new or used parts, and they're super upfront about which parts they're using. (No surprises when the bill comes either, they talk you through everything.) Today, I pulled in at 11:00, they diagnosed my car and fixed it on the spot in about an hour. I sat in their cute little air-conditioned waiting room and surfed the internet and read the new Ikea catalog. Time flew by. Now I'm on the road and my car is running great. They've saved my butt and I always feel good when I drive away. Not like I've been taken for a ride. Great, great place with exceptional customer service. read more

I was skeptical about taking my Jetta over to Austin Vee Dub. The reviews were just a little too cheery and positive. Mechanics don't naturally evoke this kind of response in people. My initial experience with AVW was not terribly positive, that's why they've lost a star. I phoned to talk to someone about my Jetta's aircon and see how long and how much it would take to have it diagnosed. The first time I called, no one answered. The second time I called, I was transferred to service and no one answered. The third time I called, I got voicemail and left a message. No one called me back. Finally, I got through to Adam. He informed me that half his staff had decided to take vacation all at the same time and it would take at least a week before they could even open the hood on my car. Luckily, I ride my scooter to and from work and could be without my car for a while. The guys at AVW were able to find the problem in my air conditioning that 3 other mechanics couldn't track down and had it fixed... FIXED within the week. It wasn't cheap as chips, but it was definitely cheaper than what it would have cost me at the local VW dealer's service shop and they likely would have just created something else for me to fix down the road. (I didn't have problems with my air conditioning until I took my car to the Dealership last December.) So, yes, these guys really do deserve the praise they get here. read more

My neighborhood mechanic was capably doing some minor work on my car, but didn't have the tools needed for a larger repair. He recommended Austin Vee Dub and I'll never go anywhere else. Since I just registered for yelp*, I wanted to spread the news after they did some work for me last week. Ask for the service manager "Daryl"...he's been there about 20 years. There's a funky waiting room with a couple of Apple computers and a TV w/ DVD if you have to stay out there (located off 183 by ABIA) and they have the "Statesman" delivered. Ive had several disappointing experiences with these guys time after time. Ive had maybe a couple of experiences where I felt satisfied with the work. The problem with this shop is that they are the only shop in the Austin area that specializes in working with Volkswagens so they take advantage of that. It has been my experience with these guys that they do a half assed job on any issue that has come up with my vehicle. I have wasted a lot of valuable time and money dealing with this shop. I would definitely not recommend this shop to anyone they have been nothing but a headache and has resulted in nothing but frustration for myself and my family. However their parts department and auto body department had good. read more

They have a vast selection of used parts..... but.... Here's what happened: I had called and agreed on a price over the phone with a used parts rep and went there the next morning. Suddenly the price DOUBLED what we had agreed upon. When I told them that it was not what he had quoted me the day before, he got defensive and asked me if I was sure that I had not called another place. I replied that I was sure, and his 2nd response was that maybe I talked to someone else there, but the price was still going to be double what I was quoted. A rather uncomfortable situation. I thought that was fairly lame to have me drive across town just to get insulted. Needless to say I left, and got the same part on eBay for 1/3 rd the price. I also have lots of work to be done on my VW, but unfortunately the way their used car parts department treated me will stop me from using their service department. read more

I was totally mislead by the reviews for this place. If you are looking for a job well done, you should keep looking. Looking for a mechanic is a nightmare, but this wasn't a good experience either! After I called ahead and got the worst phone service I've gotten in a long while, I took my car in to get the AC fixed. This was one of many red flags. Before they even looked at it, they diagnosed the problem as the most expensive thing possible. They told me they would call me with the formal diagnosis the same day, yet no one ever called. I called the following morning and what a surprise, it was the most expensive thing that needed to be done. Shocking. One month's salary, ouch! Three days later the car was ready, or so they said. On the drive home from the shop my car was making a crazy rumbling sound. When I called them back they denied all blame and told me, "These things happen. Stuff just breaks." Um, no. My car is making a noise it has never made before, but after time in their shop it sounded like someone left a phone on vibrate in my dashboard. Even after they messed up the job, no one ever apologized. No one ever admitted culpability. When I checked out for the second time in one week, they said there was no additional charge. Gee, how sweet. No charge after you put my car back together wrong and never apologized. The lights on my AC dial never came back on after getting work done at Austin VeeDub. After a stay in their shop they contend that wasn't their fault either. Never again. read more

I was having a battery issue with my VW Golf, and I took it in to two different shops who both couldn't pinpoint the issue. I finally decided to give Austin Veedub a try. They fixed it within 24 hours and didn't even charge me for diagnosis or labor. I was already really happy with the service, and on top of that the battery was under warranty with one of their retailers, so I paid a grand total of ZERO dollars. If you would like to hear more about my personal story, then read on... I had a 2001 VW Cabrio up for sale because I was moving to Chicago and no longer needed a car. I was letting a possible buyer test drive my car, and he told me he had NO problems driving a stick. Then before he could even pull out of the parking spot, he stalled my car a good 4 times... and then my car shuts off... Knowing absolutely nothing about cars, I have it towed to Austin VeeDub (decision made completely on yelp reviews). I told Daryl my story and even though they were really backed up with work in their service department, he fit me right in! The bill only ended up being around $100, thank goodness! Then I asked if they could also take a look at my air conditioning. It had stopped blowing cold air and I had been quoted $600 to have it fixed some place else. Daryl, still super busy, took his personal time to run a few tests on my air conditioning. I told him about my other quote of $600 and everything, but he determined that my air conditioning did not have any leaks and it only needed to be recharged, and then he didn't even charge me for the diagnostic and recharge of my air conditioning. They would not even work on my truck even though I only wanted a simple tuneup. Made me wait around to be told this. Offered no explanation or suggestions as to how to help. Showed up early 8:25 on a saturday in my austrian pinzgauer to get a carb tuneup. The mechanic came out to look at it b/c it is very unique, and talked about what I wanted, said they weren't open till 9, was very nice and positive about working on it. We left till 9 and waited 15 more minutes to talk to the service manager, who told me simply "we can't take it in" with no explanation of any kind. read more

Yes the head mechanic is a nice guy to customers. Bottom line, I have a car i'm still trying to fix. They let me do a 'off the books' replacement with a used part from their junkyard of cars (they have a yard full of old cars they buy from wrecks, etc to use for spare parts). they charged me $750. they didn't fix the fundamental problem, it broke again. i just got a 'generic' piece from muffler king to replace the same part for $250. So he ripped me off for $500, doing something he knows is illegal and that i can't go back against him now that it broke again. read more

Brought my 2007 Rabbit today for a 20K mile checkup, dropped off right at opening (8:00 Friday), Darryl quoted me the price and printed out for me a list of all the service they would perform. He called at 10:30 to say it was ready. Having moved from Florida recently and used to dealing with an (admittedly, not-so-bad) dealership experience, I consider the price ($225) fair and reasonable. There is alot of wonderful things I have to say about this place. I had been given the run around about fixing my car before I went here. I after several bad experiences trying to get a head light fixed on my Jetta I was sent to Austin VeeDub. And told to to talk to darryl the service manger. He walked out to my car fixed the problem. Changed the bulb and reprogrammed my clicker which the dealership told me would take all day and be $250. I was in and out in less than and hour and spent less than $20. These guys are fantastic. I am so glad that I found out about these guys they are great. Don't go to the dealer. Save your money and go to Austin VeeDub you have better service and a will save a lot of money. read more

I was a bit worried when I called on Tuesday, hoping to make an appointment by the end of the week to get my Jetta worked on, and Brett, the service manager offered Monday as the first possible time to come in. I was crushed. I have the week off from work, and I needed the service done (my drivers side window was stuck down, and my futile attempts to keep rain out had already cracked my leather seats). I think Brett heard the desperation in my voice, and said if I could bring it in and leave it, he'd try to squeeze it in. I immediately brought it over at 4:30 on a Tuesday, and Brett arranged for a ride home for me from a very nice gentleman that worked there. Wednesday morning about 9 am I got a call from Brett. The car is ready! "Wait, what?" I thought. I haven't even had a chance to call and beg the progress of my repair yet. I just dropped it off! I was hoping for Friday. Hoping with no guarantees. So, delighted, I went to pick up my car. The bill, you ask? 40% of what I had casually discussed with the parts guy and Brett. (BTW, another shop in town had given me an estimate of OVER $700 for the exact same repair that I was charged UNDER $200 for) As if that weren't enough, the duct tape that I used left an awful residue around the window (remember those futile attempts to keep rain out? I tried duct tape and packing tape, and both took and unappealing toll on the paint), well, the residue was GONE when I got the car. I dont know how or why they did it, but that small act of awesomeness just got them a customer for life. That is outstanding customer service! read more

Where to start. First, we usually take most negative comments as a way for a disgruntled customer to release their frustrations out for everyone to read. Second, yes, it is very hard to get through to service when you call. That is a problem because the phone in service never quits ringing. We took our vw jetta there twice this month (dec) for service before a 1100 mile trip to virginia and Darryl could barely get us checked in before someone in the front office was squawking on the two-way radio for him to answer the phone. He stays very busy...no wonder he drinks blue monsters all day long. Third, as for our service, we took our jetta in for a transmission fluid/filter change. Now the tranny shifts as smooth as the day we bought it. This was done upon request of my husband thinking the tranny was slipping, but it wasn't. So we returned thinking it may be a busted cv axle that was causing the "whining" on the front end. Turned out the technician drove the car and realized and immediately knew that the power steering pump could be low on fluid. Topped off the fluid (at no charge) and before we got home there was no more noise. If they wanted to they could have stuck us with a bill for a cv axle repair. While we were talking to Darryl and the technician we realized that we were way past due for a new timing belt. Yes, the tune-up price may have been higher than most automotive repair shops but at least all pulleys, tensioners, rollers, serpentine belt, water pump, etc were replaced. Now making an 1100 mile trip in a car with 134k miles is no sweat. As for the few negative comments...they must be so-called "Do It Yourself" experts. Mechanics love you guys and price things double when they have to clean up your messes or don't want to work on your junk because of your "know-it-all" attitude! :) Just take it to the real mechanics at Austin VeeDub to begin with and you won't have any of those major issues. read more

I can't begin to imagine why anyone gives these hacks a positive review. I assume it's mostly people that don't know the first thing about their cars. Here goes" Either Daryl is the most dishonest mechanic in Austin or the most incompetent and ignorant. When I first got my Vanagon years ago, and I didn't know anything about cars, I had Vee Dub perform some initial work and make sure everything was in good order. About six months later, I had learned a LOT more about my Vanagon so I checked the repairs they supposedly did and found they had replaced NONE of the parts the charged me for. None. Later on I had had some oil pressure problems that indicated the need for an engine rebuild so, foolishly I called Vee Dub. Daryl claimed that "Vanagon engines can't be rebuilt because parts aren't available anymore." That news must come as a shock to the many Vanagon engine rebuilders out there. I rebuilt my engine myself last spring. Now I do all my own repairs. But I recently I called them about doing a four-wheel alignment, since Kenny Hill VW only managed to make things worse. Daryl once again displayed his utter ignorance/incompetence when he claimed that "you can't align the rear-end on a Vanagon." Page 44.4 of the VW shop manual clearly shows the procedure for aligning the rear-end. The procedure Daryl claims doesn't exist. If you want to take your chances with a shop as horribly misinformed and dishonest has Vee Dub, go right ahead. I understand that Daryl treats women way better than men, so consider the age and sex of anyone posting s positive review of this crap-factory. Stay away. Seriously. Avoid these guys. read more

Don't be fooled by the other super-expensive VW place in town! Austin Vee Dub is DEFINATELY the best..... These guys are the most honest shop I've ever dealt with. I haven't used a shop in years, because I worked on all my own cars. I just have been screwed too much. Then I got a beautiful 1986 Jetta Diesel. I cant work on that, so I started going to the OTHER place in town, which is VERY expensive. I figured, you get what you pay for, so it'll be worth it. Then I got a recommedation to replace all 3 of my motor mounts. That seemed unnecessary to me, so I went to AUSTIN VEE DUB for a second opinion. Turns out NONE of them needed replacement, and they refused to charge me for just looking at my car (they put it on a lift). I tried to insist..."lemme give yall $50 or something" They earned a lifelong customer, I havn't taken my VW anywhere else since, and I wish I found them earlier. COULDA SAVED SO MUCH MONEY, AND I DO MEAN SOOOOO MUCH! read more

My dad always said to never trust a skinny chef, or a mechanic with clean hands. Neither of these apply here. These guys were great and super friendly to work with. I came in with a little body work repair and Juan was insanely quick fixing me up. I was pressed with time but Juan put me as a priority and got the job done the same day. Plus not to mention that I felt the price he estimated was very fair. Nick was great to work with at the desk, and at no point did I felt less than a valued customer here. He was helpful and knowledgeable about the process, and did a great job of keeping everything in line for me. The atmosphere was great, and everyone I came in contact with was friendly and helpful (even at 8 AM)!
