I used to get massages on a regular basis but fell off the massage wagon. A friend of mine highlighted that she has gotten massages once a month for the last 14 years. I was definitely behind the 8 ball on massages. My friend's long-term revelation was eye-opening, so I decided to get a massage today with Green Care Massage, which is located on W. Parmer, next door to Tomo Sushi. My massage choice was a deep tissue massage. Those polls are not for curtains!!! When my massage therapist asked me could she work on my back, I thought, I said yes. What she actually said was can I "walk" on your back. In my head, I was thinking why do her hands feel like feet...because they were feet! Snappity, snap, snap...I was getting a full on Ashiatsu massage (also known as back walking massage or barefoot massage). If you are not aware, Ashiatusu is a technique where the massage therapist uses their feet to apply deep pressure while holding onto overhead bars for balance and control. The word "Ashiatsu" is a Japanese word meaning (ashi=foot and atsu= pressure.) Apparently, my back was so tight I needed Ashiatsu first. My massage beginning to end was incredibly effective and rejuvenating experience. From the moment the session began, it was clear the massage therapist was highly skilled and knew her craft. The deep, slow strokes and focused techniques worked through my knots and tight muscles, especially in my back and legs. While there were moments of intensity that you would expect with deep tissue work, it was never painful (pressure...no pain). Afterward my body felt like it had exhaled and breathing fresh air.... well worth the time and money. I could feel the tension evaporating with each targeted movement. It is important note, I felt soreness in my neck and back during the massage that I did know existed previously. After the massage session, I noticed a significant improvement in my mobility and range of motion. My usual stiffness had disappeared. I do not know if I will get a massage once a month, but I certainly will not wait too long before another one.

I am late giving Robert his much-deserved review. I am grateful that for the last 4 years, Robert…read morehas been training me weekly in Thai Mat bodywork. I have had the honor of receiving many hours of work from him and there is no other work, therapist, or instructor like him. He is AMAZING. The way he teaches, speaks, explains, & provides his education is clear, concise, and easy to understand. Robert is teaching a different way to approach client's pain by using your body weight, proper body mechanics, and unleashing all of your God given tools to apply the work as the client needs/wants. He has guided me to rewire the way my mind looks at helping clients and their pain. He has taught me how to properly communicate with my clients, in order to meet their needs. The "lay on the table and take whatever I give you" mindset does not fly with this style of work. Each client's body, pain, and preferences are different, & with his guidance I have learned how to address issues individually and how to meet clients where they are. He has taught me to think outside the box and to get creative. When I met Robert, I was in a lot of pain doing table massage for my clients. I came to him to help my hands to stop hurting and then I quickly realized how powerful and impactful his work is. This work isn't just for my clients, this work is for me too!! I have been in multiple rear-end car accidents and this work was the only work that has ever FULLY relieved my neck pain. What started off as a resolution for my arm pain from giving massage, ended in an obsession to receive the work. I now only receive Thai mat bodywork, as it gives me much longer pain relief plus, I feel better knowing my therapist isn't injuring themselves working on me. This style of work and his training has changed my life. I now do not experience pain doing my job, which consists of 2-4 hour long sessions. Also, I am now able to help my clients get out of pain for longer, to receive the pressure they desire, effortlessly. If you have been considering training with Robert, pull the trigger. This is the most satisfying and life changing work that exists. Robert is changing this industry and only wants the best for all of us. I only have the best things to say about Robert and I have all the respect in the world for him.

That was until I took an Intro to Reboot class with my fellow Massage Harmonies last week... What's Reboot you ask. Exactly... Inspired by Thai Massage, blend in a discerning western bodywork perspective, throw in some Jujutsu and Yoga and you get this magical deeper than Deep Tissue art form. Now, I'll warn you ... I'm biased! I fell in love with martial arts many moon ago, then learned Thai Massage at The Texas Healing Arts, now I perform A LOT of Therapeutic Bodywork and Deep Tissue and I our class felt like a family reunion. So, yeah my mind was blown and my heart exploded!!! The workbook is one of the best updated manuals I've seen. Download it for free on his website! DO IT NOW!!! The amount of post workshop info and links he gives is phenomenal. His verbal instruction and in class demonstrations are easy to follow as you listen to best jams (seriously the dude's musical range is extensive) in this rad little peace palace of a studio at his and his wife's casa. Their dog Blue is super decent to chill with on lunch break too. And, the food!!! He fed us fresh from his kitchen the most scrumdiddlyumptious curry for 2 of the 3 days of our workshop. The third day we all went out to an affordable and deliciously local Mexican restaurant down the road. Yum! Another pleasant surprise was all the real talk about marketing and business. He broke down all the platforms being used today and encouraged us to engage and experiment. Social media is the future and the future is now. To understand this man and Reboot you MUST EXPERIENCE it and him in all of his wonderfully weird glory. As an essentially Austin native, knowledge seeker, and customer service snob I must say - I'm impressed. Thank you, Robert! Looking forward to hangin with ya at yoga on Wednesdays, Thai Jams on Thursdays and Fridays at Lauterstein-Conway.

If you are looking for a massage therapist that falls in between the cheaper, sometimes questionable, strip mall therapists and the more expensive day spas all over our wonderful city, try Karmassage. Also, if you are a massage regular, I especially recommend Karmassage, because Brandi is affordable, personal, and someone who keeps up with your therapeutic history. I've had the 60-minute deep tissue and hot stones, and felt amazingly relaxed and rejuvenated afterwards. Once, I became so relaxed in a hot stone massage that I kept falling in and out of a heavy doze! That was definitely one of my best sessions! Most recently, I went in with a lower back strain (probably exercise-related), and Brandi concentrated on this area before going into the full body work. The next morning the pain was nearly gone, and I felt much relief. Pros include no lobby waiting, online appointment scheduling (including gift certificates), personable yet professional, preference for room temperature, calming music, all organic oils and lotions, personalized therapy, close attention to problem areas, physical as well as nutritional guidance, and outside reading suggestions. The latter is reflective of the fact that Brandi is very dedicated to her patients feeling empowered to educate themselves so that they can foster their own healing practices. She also always asks about injuries, soreness, and areas of concern prior to your session. And she is open to conversing during the massage (and is a great conversationalist) but will maintain a quiet room for you too - it is your preference. Cons include limited hours during the summer, northwest location (if you're a southie), no other services outside of and shirodhara and deep tissue massage therapy with the following add-ons: hot stone massage, customized clinical aromatherapy, and thai herbal massage. Ultimately, the "compassionate touch" that Brandi credits her business to have and the high quality of massage therapy keeps me coming back. I've never felt like just someone on the schedule here, and always leave feeling like my session was worth every penny, a nice reward for the mind, body, and soul.

It was like visiting an old friend and I remembered just how awesome of a person she is and that I should not have let so much time go by without visiting her. A mistake I will try to not repeat even though I have to leave Austin temporarily. She is able to provide the most gentle touch, as well as deep therapeutic pressure for those stubborn knots that don't work with anything else. I have always felt that her skills make me feel relaxed even though I need her stronger touch throughout the session at some points. Her massage room is super cozy and will help you feel completely at ease. Oh, and one final note for those that are more self conscious or don't like to bare all of their goodies! Susanna let's you undress to your level of comfort and always provides a blanket to keep you covered regardless of how bare you go! Don't worry about leaving all oily either.
