My mother always said and I believe that "we are all blessed to be a blessing to others." I judged the National Arts Competition (Theme: Unity through Art) today at the George Washington Carver Museum in East Austin, evaluating entries for creativity, content, and artistic ability. We received submissions from students at Bertha Sadler Means Academy for Young Women Leaders, middle school grades 6 through 8. We have also received submissions from 4th & 5th graders at Lee Lewis Campbell Media & Performing Arts Elementary School. This museum honors community, memory, and lived experiences. The museum started as Austin's first public library in 1926, later becoming the "Colored Branch" library when moved to East Austin during segregation. Then it evolved into the first African American neighborhood museum in Texas, which gives it a deeper sense of purpose. The exhibits are both informative and deeply moving. The storytelling offers context that connects local history to broader national narratives. The museum is well maintained and located in a historic Black landmark in Austin. Staff are friendly and informed, and rotating exhibitions provide fresh experiences with the permanent collections. In addition, admission is free, making the Carver Museum accessible for everyone. If you value history and culture, it's a worthwhile visit that educates and encourages dialogue in a respectful setting.

Bohls, this Queen Anne home sits in its original location, once the center of the Bohls farm. The museum displays many antiques, as well as, historical photographs, documents, and books. This museum is open for public First Sunday of the month from 1 - 4 pm and Tuesdays during Pfarmer's Market from 3 - 7 pm (March through December). They really stress the "having fun" part of it and don't tolerate bickering and uber-competitiveness. The karaoke leagues started out as just a singing competition but they have quickly evolved into mini theatrical productions. It's no longer enough to just get up and sing a song--people are coming in elaborate costumes and acting out hilarious skits to the music. Keep up the good job ACES!

You get to go out there, make new friends, and do things that you've always loved doing! People in karaoke really enjoy singing, dancing, and even dressing up! We all root for each other and it's a very supportive environment, you don't have to be a great singer to have fun. Whether it's RC Fowlers or Common Interest, they're both super fun places to sing. In Common Interest, we all have this big room just for the clan and we are grouped up in 3. It makes really fun to be teamed up and there are different themes every week. Volleyball at Hanovers on Friday and Saturday can't get any better, you get to enjoy drinks, chill back, and play some sand volleyball all in one place! Another cool part in all of these activities is that you don't even have to have a full team, you can just signup by yourself and you'll be placed with new people. That's pretty awesome if you're new in town or just want to make more friends! This is a must-join clan, you get to socialize with new people while also having fun playing volleyball, karaoking, bowling, and so many other activities.

Turns out, something got lost in translation...botánica refers to a spiritual or herbal shop, not an actual botanical garden. Still, the visit turned into a fascinating surprise. The moment you walk in, the scent of incense, herbs, and oils fills the air, instantly slowing the pace. The small shop is packed with candles for love, protection, and prosperity, along with herbs, oils, crystals, tarot decks, spiritual books, and ritual items. Nearly everything feels tied to meaning or personal reflection, even for visitors unfamiliar with the practices behind them. At first, the sheer variety can feel a little overwhelming, like wandering into a metaphysical treasure hunt without a map. But that sense of discovery is also what makes the space interesting. The store manager was kind and helpful, and the shop invites you to explore at your own pace...whether you're deeply spiritual or simply curious about the culture, symbolism, and beauty of the items around you. The items are very reasonably priced. Sometimes our path leads us to new learnings and experiences, which is a very good thing.
