I've been going to this school for about three years, since the "bad old days." (just kidding)…read more So they just moved out of the room they were renting at the AACC, the one where you had to be careful not to crash into the glass display cases and the kids would track dirt on the floor so during class your shoes couldn't grip. The new location is fantastic! Easily triple the amount of room we had at the AACC and we don't have to worry about banging into anything breakable now. The ceiling is much higher so I don't worry so much about hitting it when I practice staff forms. There are also now stretch bars along the back wall and storage for all the things we didn't use to be able to have before: kick shields, targets, etc. And now that we're not on the tile anymore its a lot less intimidating to practice jumping techniques and break falls in the advanced and contemporary classes. The instruction is still the same as always. The material comes from Shi Xing Ying, a Shaolin Temple trained monk who now lives in Houston. The Austin school is taught by his student, Scott Pettengill, and Austin students who visit Houston can attend class there with the monk at no extra charge. I've mainly focused on the Contemporary Wushu they teach there. The only other game in town for Contemporary Wushu, I think, is David Scott's school and the UT Wushu club if you're a student there. Chris Tong (studied under Jeff Bolts, Madame Wang Jurong, and the monk Shi Xing Ying) is the contemporary wushu coach at ISWCATX and for the UT wushu club. If you come and take traditional classes he's a steal at just $30 in addition to the regular tuition, but if you take only the contemporary classes the rates are still more than competitive (especially considering how few people teach true contemporary) with everything else out there. His classes are still fairly small, I guess because they start later--around 7pm-- which makes it even more of a bargain since they end up almost being private lessons. Although I guess if I write this and it sounds inviting then maybe they won't be so small and then if I want a private I'd actually have to pay for it...but the more the merrier? I used to feel like such a klutz as a kid, I was a terrible basketball player, but I've developed so much more balance and coordination since taking Kung Fu, especially the contemporary class. I'm always spent and exhausted by the end of class. Its a great workout in a relaxed atmosphere from instructors whose pedigree can't be questioned.

My kid has been attending this school for a few months and we've been really happy. The instructors…read moreare very good and actually give out quality instructions. We tried another school before and the instructor never spent much time helping the kids who weren't doing certain forms or movements right how to do them properly. The instructors here will work with a student one-on-one if they see that the kid is struggling with something. They are patient but ask the kids for their efforts. They are strict with the kids (no goofing off!) but are friendly and fun at the same time. It's a very low key operation at a reasonable price. The instructor/student ratio can vary but most of the time it's 3-5 students per instructor.

If you've ever attempted something only to regret having not attempted it 10 years sooner, then you…read morecould relate to my feelings of learning Ving Tsun at the Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy. Every time I attend a class is like adding another frame in my own 'preparing to face the ultimate bad guy' montage for my personal kung fu movie. I've been studying there for almost 8 years, and have seen the changes in both my mind and my body. They don't come over night and it does take a lot of hard work and determination, but on those rare instances when a cup of coffee inadvertently slides off the table and onto your lighting fast hands, it fills you with surprise and pride in yourself, leaving you wanting more. Sifu and Simo Vyvial have been very good to me. They are kind, supportive, and patient, but by no means are they the easiest instructors. While VT strives to find your physical weaknesses, Sifu and Simo will find your mental ones. The system and the instructors will work tirelessly to heal and strengthen you for as long as you let them. There will be times when it gets really difficult...really difficult. But more often there are days when you can ask yourself "How did I just throw 10,000 punches?" I actually have no idea how I accomplished that...I just did it. The system they teach is transformative in a way because in addition to growing your strength and agility, it also hardens your resolve as well. And I think that's why I love this school so much.

In my lifetime, I have done many things. I've played soccer and lacrosse and run track events. I've…read morestudied different styles of martial arts, ranging from boxing to traditional jujutsu. I have never found anything as rewarding and powerful as the Ving Tsun Kung Fu taught at Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy. When I walked through the door two years ago, I was as close to broken physically and emotionally as I had ever been in my life. I had been through a big medical crisis, had my depression, anxiety and ADHD were through the roof. On top of it, I was drinking a lot and my cigarette smoking was at an all time high. From the minute that I walked in, I could tell that I was in a place that was very carefully kept and deliberately arranged. Everything about it was cultivated, from the placement of the resting benches to the wooden dummies standing by the doors. The instructor who was there for my introduction lesson was informed, kind and was able to push me beyond the what I thought myself capable of. Over the last two years since then, I've been training alongside some of the most wonderful people in Austin. The teacher at the school, whom we call "Sifu", which is Cantonese for "teacher", is very involved in the growth and development of every student, but has a teaching style that is more about inspiration and leading from behind than over-teaching. More often than not, we are helped to discover things on our own and figure them out, rather than simply going through rote drill after rote drill. Sifu does not have an assembly line: while every student of his is recognisably his student, everyone's Kung Fu is very different depending on their personalities, bodies, etc. To me, this is the sign of a master teacher. He has passed on Kung Fu while completely maximising the natural capabilities and advantages of each student. These days, I'm stronger than I ever have been in the past. I'm not on knee braces any more. I've quit drinking. I don't smoke any more. The calm that I've found from the training has helped me not need the medications I was taking for depression, anxiety and ADHD. I am in every way a much stronger person than I was when I first walked in. Kung Fu is generous to you. There are some things that give you exactly back what you put into it, a linear, 1:1 ratio of reward to effort. Kung Fu's reward structure is logarithmic. You will get far more of out of it than you put into it for the first several years, with it slowly tapering off as you get to the decade mark. I cannot enough stress what a wonderful place this is and how much what I've learned here has made my life better. Walk in. Take a lesson. You won't be disappointed.

Masters Williams failed to mention that there was a charge of $50 per person, until they were in the office and wanted $100 for both of my kids. My son paid him $50. Master Williams said "that's on me, I should've known you weren't good for it." I feel frustrated that no one mentioned the fee beforehand, but what I really have an issue with is how he spoke to my son. What he said was not only unprofessional, but extremely rude and uncalled for. As I was prepared to prepay the whole year up for both of them, if they wanted to attend this dojo. When I got to speak with Grand Master Willaims myself, he was extremely condescending, unprofessional, and I felt that he was not taking me or my concerns seriously. He mentioned that he's not hurting for students, but swindled & strong armed my son out of $50. He mentioned he was in law enforcement and "didn't respond to threats." I made it clear that this was just feed back on his interactions with potential new clients. He is unprofessional and I will not recommend this establishment for anyone ,especially kids.

She fought throughout Texas in 15 regional tournaments. She won 14 first places and the praises of every Grand Master whose students she defeated. The one tournament not won was because of a disqualification which was later determined by video to be incorrect. 2. Do you know my daughter won 2 State Championships in one Year! She defeated experienced black belts 3. She got to meet and to learn individually from UFC 4-5 different invited specialists like Adam "bar-None" Guerra, 20+ Grandmaster/ HOF master martial artists, and other "who's who" international fighters. 4. She even got to cross train with none other than Ann Wolfe at Ann's gym. Don't let some review by a momma who probably thought her looks could hook her some kind of discount!. The way Professor Williams has always been is to work with each parent if they need it- especially single mothers or fathers with children. I was a single man whose daughter was bullied by those who think they own the world, and Professor Moses restored to her a type of strength, confidence, and life without fear- while at the same time allowing her compassion to continue to grow. There has been, and will always be a "bitter Betty" use to getting things cheap or free; I probably shared in paying Professor Williams for some of their children's equipment; helmets, uniforms, gloves, and cost associated with attending a tournament, cost THEY could not afford or wanted to get for free. But he gave a lot of stuff free to kids, even when some of their parents were to cheap to commit fully to their children's growth. This Professor Holds legitimate belts AND rank and there are only a few people of his expertise level, skill set.
