Austin Double Standard Academy Here's what you need to know about this circus(gym). Once you become a member you'll be welcomed with a fake smile, fake title as a friend, brother, sister whatever. And every time you come to the gym you will feel that fake friendly environment. Take in consideration before signing up, that if they want to kick you out - they will find any reason to do that. Doesn't matter you right or wrong - nobody is going to talk to you, even look at you. "you out" - that's the statement. Very cultish gym where Mr Head Coach Randy() likes to be and act like a "boss", driven by an ego, and everybody is going to do whatever he asks/says. As I stated above if "commander"(I'd call it a clown, but don't want to be rude) gave a command to don't pay attention to your existence - almost all crew members like a good behaved puppies going to do so. Kicking out people, coming up with absolutely ridiculous reasons like " you as an individual make comments about females at the gym and it makes them feel uncomfortable, stating that there were witnesses". You confused, because there's no evidence, not even a single explanation of what happened, you don't understand what's going on. But when you want to find out the truth, actually sit down with everybody who's "involved" and talk - "we are afraid for our business, we scared that we gonna be sued, we don't have money(kinda shame to say in my opinion), we have to let you go." but at the same time we protect our students, we care about safety etc.(really? I feel it) and technically you have to violate the same rule 3 times to have your membership terminated but not at this circus(excuse me again, gym.) Oh, and probably gonna come up with other BS from the past, like you were working hard on the beginners while sparring or something like that. Or driving fast in front of the gym(attaching a screenshot, after checking tell me that you are man enough to use that as a reason). P.S. Head Coach Randy doesn't feel shy to knock people out in the ring, and once they down just stay and look at them, like there's something personal. Ego problem. (Don't even try to dispute that, it was in front of me, Ben did NOT deserve it. Sharing with everybody how Ben called him to spar last session and MR HEAD COACH had to show him who's the boss - ). Attaching another screenshot, which is probably going to be hard to swallow, but it is what it is, nothing personal right buddy? Since we talking about "making comments what makes people feel uncomfortable". :) (conversation was with a female from that gym). That being said you officially have a status of Austin Double Standard Academy! Congrats! If that's all okay with you - please more than welcome to sign up!

This is my first Yelp review- normally I like to hide in the shadows and let veteran yelpers do the heavy lifting. BUT, every now and then you run into someone, or someplace, deserving of a spotlight. AKA is that place for the following reasons (gets out soapbox) 1. Culture. I had just switched careers and moved to Austin, and aside from my new work colleagues, the AKA family were the first people I met, and will be lifelong friends, of that I have no doubt. Randy, the owner, treated me from day 1 like I had been going to the gym for years. No favorites, no nepotism, just honest, open, friendliness that has trickled its way down through the entire staff and all the coaches. Of all the gyms, martial arts and otherwise, that I've been to, AKA has, hands down, the best culture and community. It was, and remains to this day, a grounding, positive force in my life. 2. Facility. The gym itself is f*cking awesome. More bags than you can count, a ring, a cage, mats galore, tons of equipment, and if you're a meathead like me- there's an excellent functional training section with a power rack, kettle bells, impact balls, etc. Plenty of space to train; sanitation and hygiene standards are followed and enforced. One finer detail that sometimes gets overlooked is pricing- they have a few options, namely month-to-month vs contract. If you're just feeling it out, you can go month to month, but if you want to make a commitment or if you're like me and know you'll stay consistent because it's something you enjoy, you can sign a contract and get a significant discount. Also, they have a free trial if you want to test drive a class before making a decision. 3. Coaching. Like I said above, the sense of belonging, the friendliness, and welcoming culture Randy has created has trickled down through all of the staff. Randy runs the gym with his wife, Tessa, and the occasional appearance of their daughter. They are a family, and they will bring you into that family if you join. The other coaches extend that same feeling, and aside from being excellent at what they do, they are laid-back and cordial- offering private lessons and sometimes just giving you one-on-one attention for the hell of it. Can't speak highly enough of Adam, Eric, Jared, Nick, Ricky, Edgar, and Bubba. They are all wildly unique, talented individuals all working together to see you grow. Edgar is a mean salsa coach, too, if you're looking to stack dancing lessons on-top of ass kicking... Overall, I can't speak highly enough of AKA. If you're on the fence, looking for a gym, just got to town, or want to shake things up- DROP IN. You won't regret it. Did I mention it's free? Oh yeah, and they have kids classes, too. I don't have any rug rats of my own but it looks awesome and the kids are always smiling and having a blast. They have a structured, traditional feel to the classes but mix in plenty of fun and games to keep it interesting and stimulating for young minds. You might mess around and make one of the most impactful positive decisions in your life and your child's life at the same time...

I was in Austin Texas for some education, just flew in. Found this gym Austin Kickboxing Academy on yelp, dropped in for a class. They were great! The gym had a gritty unfinished look that just reminded me of a "Rocky" style old school gym. I loved it! Friendly, Excellent vibe! Great instruction. I'll go back again for more. Heavy bag work was legit. I recommend stopping by. Great, detailed instruction.

Kickboxing training compliments my bicycle training! The stronger I am with kickboxing, the stronger my stroke power on my bicycle.

Every session is a great workout, but more importantly, you leave feeling like you're building real technique. It's clear he's learned from some of the best in the world (Ask him about it!), which shows in the way he teaches. I'm glad I found him when I moved to Austin -- highly recommend his 1-on-1 sessions to anyone looking to improve fast with the right foundation.

I've been severely out of shape since Covid because the gyms shut down, and I didn't feel safe going into a gym once they did open up. I was at my absolute heaviest weight I'd ever been, and getting back into shape seemed daunting. With Olivier's help, I am now building muscle, upping my cardio, and shedding weight. He focused on technique above power, which was really important to me because I came in knowing absolutely nothing and of course I don't want to get injured. Now if anyone were to put me in a threatening position, I know I can knee them in the head, teep them, and/or give them a nice punch to the liver. I feel more confident in my abilities, and I feel like I have a healthier, better body.

The instructors and owners are all welcoming, friendly, and likeable. The classes are well-structured and logical. How the teachers are taught to teach shows -- there is real effort in the environment they want to create / curate here. The trainers demonstrate clear expertise in every area. More importantly, though, the way the gym is run is the right way, in my opinion: it's VERY clean and sanitary and all the participants are trained to keep it that way. It's a don't-be-that-guy/gal kind of thing which everyone enforces, and this is a very good thing. Dirty gyms are not just gross but unsafe. This one is probably clean enough to do minor surgery in. But there are / have been vanishingly few injuries or accidents, that I know of. Safety first. The calendar / schedule is super consistent, and the billing is clear and transparent. Everything is right there on their website. The owners really don't hide the ball on anything - including why they do things the way they do them. It's not the cheapest gym in town, but it's worth it. You will love going enough that the cost will not matter. This is a safe environment - both physically and psychologically / interpersonally. There is a class for everyone, from the raw, non-athletic beginner interested in practical self-defense to the serious martial arts type. I wish I could go more often than I do. Highly recommend this one.

I was told have too much pride by a student there in the mist of him yelling. He also called me out saying letting me get in there with him. I replied your 100 lbs heavier than me. He continued on and on and approaching me even calling me a bitch. That is when the coach started to intervene and say you might as well shut up because there's only so much of him that I can control his exact words as I caught the drift and he continued on saying that I teed off on one of his guys as I hit him with a body shot and he was the second guy I faced, but they were trying to drop me with headshot so I see no issues as that's what the Coach was calling for them to do to me and I went to his body. But as soon as I disagreed and said, I did not tee off on him he took off his glasses and said you're really starting to piss me off proceeded to jump down from standing ring side grabbed me, shook me up as I was out of breath still trying to walk out the door because he was kicking me out I couldn't even make it to my stuff and pick it up in a timely manner as he was stalking me tell me I wasn't moving quick and then again proceeded to snatch me up and push me out the door as soon as I could pick up my bag, I agreed on leaving and this action was totally unnecessary and humiliating as a fighter as I just let him do his thing as it's his gym and I felt like I was in position to get jumped. I called the police so a police report has been filed. As if I even tried to stop him from assaulting me, I know there would have been greater conflict as once he took off his glasses and didn't try to reason I started to realize there was no bringing him back. I have not been training long or any really in a boxing gym and would have loved to know what I did so wrong especially since I did not start the confrontation and ultimately this is just unsettling and I don't want anyone else to be in the situation that's why was a necessity for me to type this to go ahead and move on as the Coaches name was BRIAN MOSS and even after calling the police they just wrote it up as assault by contact which most likely nothing will be done, but that gave him opportunity to file trespassing against me and I am not allowed in that gym for at least a year this is now conflicts with me doing a smoker and other training so coming out of the situation I actually lost more. Sorry about the grammar and punctuation. Just wanted to get this out of my head so I used the voice to text to complete. Hope I can give some insight on unity combat club to anyone who cares.
