My five year old just started here a few weeks ago and I must say I've been very pleased. I was in jiu jitsu in my earlier years and I know the kids coaches can be a mixed bag sometimes although most all of the ones I had in the past have been great guys. The coaches at Village of Wolves have been some of the best kids coaches I've seen . . . so patient and kind with him especially coach Mike and coach Ivan but they also have the hard-to-find ability to be just the right amount of firm with him when they need to be with out being too harsh or using an angry tone and quickly back to business after saying what needs to be said and getting him back on track. They do an excellent job of keeping him safe and not letting him goof off too much for his and other kids' own safety but also not being too overbearing and giving him a little slack until it becomes an issue. Going here has really helped with his confidence and toughness. He used to cry or run to mommy for any little bump or bruise but now he's seeing that a little bit of discomfort isn't the end of the world. He can't wait to go every week. Female friendly gym, they have Sunday classes for ladies along with an open mat format for women. Awesome trainers here, competitors and a nice facility per my daughter. She's indicated she feels comfortable and welcome here. And that she enjoys training here when time and schedule permits since we have to travel into town. Would highly recommend! read more

I think most BJJ gyms have solid instruction. What sets a gym apart is the culture. We have about 10 black belts and everyone is super nice and laid back. One of the things I dont like about combat sports is when there is a bro culture, VOW doesnt have a bro culture. Every gym targets a specific niche with their culture. Some gyms go hard every roll, some gyms are more traditional, some are more modern. VOW culture flows from Ryan V. the owner. He is super laid back, always has a smile on his face, makes fun of himself, but is always researching and learning the latest BJJ metas. Not everyone will like these things, but these are my favorite parts of the gym: 1) No warmups except in the wednesday fundamentals class. Every moment of class is spent on BJJ techniques, not jumping jacks, pushups, and running in circles around the room 2) can get hard rolls or soft rolls. Some days I just want to work on specific techniques and I dont want an all out war. But some days Im prepping for comps and I want every roll to be hard. Both are available 3) casual atmosphere. There isnt much ceremony, you can stop if you want, if you are late it is no big deal, there is a lot of laughing and joking around. If you want to train someplace else they are fine, if you leave for another gym, they still like you. Some gyms have a very us/them culture. 4) Classes start on time. Sometimes they will go a little long, but classes start within 5 minutes of the scheduled start time. Ive visited gyms where we waited 15 minutes to start class. 5) Focus on modern and traditional games. There are a lot of instructors and some focus on very traditional techniques, while there are also specific classes for leg locks and the modern bjj meta. For the first 2 years I mostly focused on a very traditional game and now Im starting to work on leg locks, leg entries, and a wider variety of modern open guards. read more

Been training there for about 6 months now, the instructors classes are very informative and I'm learning a lot . The students who have been there for a while now are all very respectful and seem to go out there way to help the newer people which I really liked about the place. Open mats on Sunday are so fun I would definitely recommend this location to new people who are wanting to learn. read more

I came here for a free lesson and opted not to continue the program, not because the gym and its workers and members were sub par--they were all very helpful--but because I'm already working out pretty frequently at my bouldering gym and am not physically capable of doing both sports at this point in my fitness journey. The space is somewhat small, but it works. There was a real sense of community between the athletes there. People were very friendly and open to helping me, an absolute beginner, get started in the sport. If I wasn't doing bouldering, I'd absolutely continue at this gym. If you're looking to get into jiu-jitsu, this seems like a great place to be. read more

Incredible academy!! I've trained at 100+ academies due to traveling for missionary work, and this academy stands out beyond words. I worked with Professor David, and I cannot speak highly enough of this academy. He has such a passion for teaching, and took the time to really break down the academy and meet me where I'm at in my journey. Teachers like him are very rare. And the talent level here is off the charts. It's an academy full of gentle beasts. I cannot recommend this place enough. The facility is awesome! Ryan is a great coach with a deep understanding of grappling. He is patient and welcoming. Also, his ability to teach basic and advanced techniques is very easy to follow. I've been training with him for 3 years and I am always blown away by the techniques shown. Don't wait a long time to step into the mat for fear of a bad atmosphere or a room full of "meat heads". So far, I have been very impressed with this school. Honestly, I have had a couple of really negative experiences at other schools in town, so I have become very cautious about starting at a new BJJ place, but this place has hit all the right marks so far. The 2 coaches that I've trained with so far, Ryan & Rudy, both seem like genuinely nice, cool humans, and they are both really great instructors. I also really love the way that they structure the classes- the warm ups are functional for the sport instead of just running in circles around the room every day to start class. A lot of coaches will talk about how there's no ego allowed on the mats, but then they end up having the biggest egos in the room. Not the case at VOW! I haven't seen the least bit of that kind of thing from the coaches, which is pretty dang rare and super fantastic. I am just now recovering from a spinal injury that had me out of training Jiu Jitsu for about a year, so I'm extremely skittish about rolling (sparring) with new people, even with coaches. But Ryan & Rudy both made me feel really comfortable and were very helpful and careful when rolling. I'm so excited and grateful that this place exists. I can't wait to go back on Monday. read more

I highly recommend VOW BJJ, Ryan is a legit Black Belt and a patient teacher. On my first day I found an environment that was welcoming and friendly.
