Mushroom soup was ok, as well as the pulled pork sandwich. The smoked trout appetizer wasn't that great. Trout didn't have a smoky flavor. The worst part of the meal was the dessert. The raspberry apple pie was awful, it looked like it was made with gelatin and it didn't really taste like anything. Apple crumble was too sweet. read more

We love staying in Keene Valley and walking to this place for dinner after a day of hiking. The soups are killer and always my favorite menu items! I've had split pea, Hungarian mushroom and tomato bisque - all were extremely good. Beer on tap selections are limited but they have some top notch selections including big slide ipa, fiddle head ipa and Ainu brown ale. The specials have all been very good - chicken parm, tenderloin medallions for example. The chefs know what they are doing. I had the pesto penne and roasted butternut squash, both were quite good. I usually wouldn't order these at a restaurant because they tend to be overcooked, but I trust they will be nicely done here. My only complaint is the food can be a bit bland. I'd prefer more salt and spice. read more

First, I have driven past this place for many years always on my way to a work conference in Lake Placid. Now I'm semi-retired with more time to explore the beautiful Adirondacks! Myself and a friend decided to stop at this quaint Inn to have lunch. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by a waitress who was so friendly and welcoming. Her name is "Clyde" and she made my day so much brighter. In a world where there is so much animosity it was refreshing to witness sincere kindness. What happed to this place? It used to be so good! It took a long time to get our food. We saw people coming in after us that were served right away. The pork sandwich was all fat. We were going to get up and leave, but thought that would be rude. We paid for the over priced food and decided never to return. read more

Have visited twice already, so I'm ready now to note down my thoughts. Keep in mind I'm from NYC, so my standards seem to be overall very high. Eating out is nice, and the service is good the lady there is straight but nice. Food is said to be fully fresh and homemade, I find it a bit hit and miss, somethings are amazing and others not so much. The good: wings, pork chop special, chicken parm The bad: fish dishes are bland, chicken in salads is cold, overall everything needs some salt. I went here with my daughters for dinner. The food was mixed-service was poor. We stopped in as they were switching over from lunch and asked to make a reservation for later. The woman who was managing the first floor said they don't take reservations after 3:00 but we could stop by later. We stopped in around 6:30 and were told they had no tables and weren't sure if any would open up. We waited around a bit and after a while, the same woman whom I had talked with earlier eventually took us to a table just after I asked my daughters if they wanted to go elsewhere. We ordered an appetizer (chips with spinach and artichoke dip for $9) to share. It was tasty. The restaurant is known for its mushroom soup, so I ordered a bowl of it ($6) as I love a good mushroom soup! The waitress only brought me a small cup. It met the taste expectations and was excellent! The entrees were disappointing-the homemade chips and 2 small bread pickle slices that come with the $12 burgers did not impress my daughters nor I. The burgers themselves are standard pub fare and acceptable although not memorable. The $18 chicken Marsala sounded delicious and was fair; the waitress forgot to bring the salad out entirely. We decided not to even try to order a dessert and requested the check. It was not correct, but we decided to just pay it and leave. I had chocolate from a nearby restaurant in the car anyway, so we shared that later. I will not be returning here. However, if you decide to go, the mushroom soup is worth ordering. read more

We were driving in the area and stopped at the Mountaineer store and we asked the gentleman who work there if there was any good places to eat in the area. He started to mention one and then he stopped and said no the best one is to go to the Ausable Inn. We decided to go there we sat out on the front deck it was the absolute most beautiful day ever. The temperature was about 72 no wind absolutely gorgeous day. Their menu was really wonderful for lunch. They had shrimp cocktail that was to die for. They give you five huge crispy cold delicious shrimp cocktail and enough cocktail sauce and crackers. I also could not resist the scallops on the menu. Oh my God I have never had more perfect scallops in my life. They were pure white they were sauteed in a sherry sauce on greens and I had to stop myself from licking the dish. LOL they were so amazing. We love this place so much we came back the next day for dinner and again I have to tell you the shrimp cocktail was to die for and this time I asked for some horseradish so I could make it a little spicier and that made it even all the better for me.. I also had their special which was a stuffed Cod with crab and it was delicious. Then the desert... apple crumb pie like I have never tasted in my 71 years. It was the most amazing delicious unbelievable tasting pie. What was most shocking was how reasonable the bill was. This food is absolutely delicious and amazing and I would certainly suggest that if you're in that area to stop in there and definitely make a reservation for dinner as it's very busy. It's just so amazing to me that the chef-owner of this in the middle of nowhere restaurant using the same ingredients a lot of places have and use them to perfection. We have eaten in so many places in our travels this is definitely in the top two. We live in Rochester and it would almost be worth the trip just to go back to this restaurant for dinner that's how good it was. The lady and I were hiking up Noonmark that day and were going to camp there, except there was a group of 20 college kids totally dominating the campsite. Nah, dude. So, once we finished our hike we had to find a place to stay, but our first order of business was food (STARVING after that hike). Their kitchen closes really early, like, 8 or 8:30, which was a bit of a drag. Suggestion: maybe do a reduced menu until 10 or 11, then you can clean up everything but the bare essentials, etc.? Just a thought. Anywho, a waitress mentioned that they had rooms for pretty cheap. She sent us to Baxter Mountain Inn, where we had some excellent burgers, then we came back around. We came back after burgers and talked with Brantley, the bartender, who helped us get situated in a room. He let us look it over before committing to it, which was pretty nice. We decided the room was good; cozy and can fit the two of us, the bathroom was close by. That night there was only one other guest staying there, so we were cool with the shared bathroom situation. FYI, there are two bathrooms on the floor where all the rooms are. Bathroom was pretty much clean and smelled nice, always a plus. 'Cept another patron had left a washcloth in the shower which didn't get cleaned up. Not the worst but it looks like somebody didn't do their rounds maybe. Anyway, we get situated in our room and go downstairs to the bar, where there wasn't any seating at that moment. Brantley knew we were from out of town obviously, so he took some time to chat with us and give us some tips. He was really welcoming and friendly, so we felt right at home. A couple of spots opened up at the bar, and we sat down. Before you know it we're chatting it up with the locals and having a good time! We ended up hanging there pretty late and drank a considerable amount, ending up with a pretty modest bar tab. Anyway, would def stay there again for the rates and hospitality. read more

This used to be my favorite restaurant when we vacationed in Lake Placid but no longer! When we first started coming, the menu was very accommodating to my dietary needs but that is no longer the case. Luckily, two nearby competitors have stepped up and offer a wider variety of superlative food. We were there over Columbus Day weekend so it was obviously busy. The server did a great job managing our group of 11 for drinks and dinner. All restaurants struggle with enough help but they managed us quite well which we appreciated. Our group ordered a variety of menue items. The steak was good, and most of the other items were also good although not large quantities for servings. The one thing which was not good was the haddock - this is not a major place for seafood but a couple of our group had haddock which they felt was not good. We finally back tracked for dinner on Memorial weekend and might have had the best steak I've ever had in my life. A staple for those of us hiking the high peaks. Great for post hike beers with multiple microbrews on tap, full bar and an extensive menu. In nice weather you can sit on the deck and take in the ADKS. Today I had a guides chicken sandwich. Their homemade chips are great. I saw sweet potato fries come out but didn't see them on the menu, bummer. Tons of daily specials, today features duck wings and homemade baked mac n cheese. Didn't have either but wanted to. I have stayed here many times with both my hiking buddies as well as with my family, and have never been disappointed. Ellie and Keith (owners) have always gone out of their way to make us feel comfortable. The rooms are comfortable and clean, and perfect for the post-hiker who is not looking for deluxe (and expensive) accommodations. The fact that there is a restaurant and bar on the premises is perfect if your trail-weary legs are not looking for any further mileage after a day of hiking. As for the food, it's a matter of expectations. If you're looking for a "fine dining" experience, you need to head north to Lake Placid where there are a plethora of such options. I have always found the food at the Ausable Inn appetizing and appreciated. Can't speak for some of the claims of rudeness by some of the other reviewers - it's possible that along the way they hired some staff who weren't quite up to snuff on the customer service - but I have never personally witnessed this behavior during my many stays. All in all, if you want comfortable accommodations and a good meal at reasonable prices, with a location within walking distance of several popular trailheads, the Ausable Inn is an excellent choice. read more

Cozy, homey, and unfussy - this place is a bargain! I've stayed here many times for a quick one-night when dropping off kids at camp or visiting the area. Always a friendly reception, even if we arrive late. The rooms are clean and furnished with antiques, the beds are comfy enough, and the bathrooms are nice and updated, with plenty of clean towels. It's a charming, family-run, old-fashioned inn, not a boutique hotel (which, in Keene Valley, would be out of place). I've never been disappointed by their service. Thank goodness places like this still exist. And it's right across from the Noon Mark Diner. What's not to like?! read more

Very rude. We had a party of 10 on the eve of Thanksgiving. My step-father was treating all of us to dinner. When he received the bill, it just had the value of the dinner without any itemization. At his request, the waitress brought over her itemization list that wasn't very complete. He decided to go ask the bartender for a complete list from the cpu. The bartender was extremely rude and instructed my step-father to just pay his F'IN bill. Whoa. The owner wasn't accommodating either, saying they've had a lot of french Canadians lately that have been very rude. We are locals, however, all customers should be treated the same. I came here twice this past weekend for some post-hike refueling. A surprisingly ambitious menu with a strong back bench of classic American pub fare. The Polish-influenced dill-mushroom soup and chili were both fantastic, as was the chicken marsala. Burger was fine. Just fine. Cocktails were both well-made and cheap. I've eaten here a couple times and it was just ok. I go here because it's close to where I hike. Many times we get out of our hike late and they won't accommodate us even 1 minute after 9. Fair enough. Tonight we get there at 8:30pm and they tell us they can't serve us. They say they have become reservation only on busy weekends. Meanwhile they have an empty table but say more people are coming in. So 20 minutes later we pass by again. The table is still empty and even more people have left. They basically had no interest in serving us or accommodating us in any way and went on to start recommending other restaurants. Apparently they are so successful they don't need or want your business so I suggest you don't waste your time with these arrogant snobs. I forgot to mention to them that I'm an event host for a hiking group of over 10,000 people and myself and others run trips to the area throughout the year. I'm going to spread the good word to all my hiking friends. Thanks for nothing and keep your mediocre food and poor attitudes! read more
