I have had much better results, organically, as opposed to dumping chemical fertilizers on everything. There is something to be said about adding beneficial strains of bacteria and fungi to your soil. Plants seem to respond so much better. I'm always on the lookout for new products. From soil ammendments, plant starters, fertilizers and products to improve the compost tea I brew. I found a real gem here! Firstly, Joe, the proprietor, is about the nicest guy you could meet and do business with. He has a passion for organic gardening, agricultural, and turf methods. The first time I stopped in, I ended up staying for about an hour, because he has so much great information and loves to share the results of the products he stocks. And, he answers email awful quick, if I have a question. Great guy! The products sold are all organic. I picked up about 40 pounds of earthworm castings, some crushed crab shell, a new plant starter called Vitazyme (works better than Superthrive IMO), some hydrolyzed fish and seaweed fertilizer, and Joe threw in a sample of a new product (to me anyway) called Quantum Growth. It's a probiotic, teaming with microbes, that I believe can also be used in Hydroponic setups. I just scratched the surface of the products they carry. You can view all of them on the website. I plan to try several other items they carry this summer to test the effectiveness. In all, I highly recommend this place if you are into organic gardening methods, just want to learn more or on the fence about going organic. Joe is an absolute wealth of information, and he's happy to pass it along, if you're interested in or learning about the benefits of organic gardening and turf care. So glad I found this place! It will be a regular stop this summer and fall for sure!

Located on the Post Road, Lloyd and his wife Gianna are passionate about providing their customers with the highest quality products, whether it be sourced locally or from around the world. The entire store is truly a treasure-trove of unique finds and community spirit! Lloyd helped us make up a box of goodies to bring home and told us about Harry's Berries, and we're obsessed! We also saw red bananas for the first time, which are softer and sweeter than regular bananas. They even had pink pineapples! There's so much more to see and enjoy from Double L - pop in and say hi to Lloyd and Gianna the next time you're in Westport, you'll fall in love with this market!

The main food options are in the second room, and it includes very well-stocked shelves. I was amazed and overwhelmed by the number of snack items they had. There is also a full wall of where your own, loose products like granola and nuts. I arrived in the middle of a weekend day, so there seemed to be not as many vegetables left. For example, I got the last carton of cherry tomatoes. There were also not as large options of vegetables, but I assume that is because most of the produce is local. The second space has a large variety of household and health products. I wonder how popular that part of the store is. One thing I did not like, though, was the prices were not always obviously posted or on the product itself. That always makes me a little worried, especially in a store that is generally on the more expensive side.

Russ works as the CEO of a successful sign manufacturing company. While vacationing in Vermont, the Hussmanns stopped at a country store to get some ice cream and they noticed some maple syrup-making supplies for sale. Russ decided to take up maple syrup-making as a fun hobby. He bought six taps and a 'how-to' book. Maple sap is made up of about 2% sugar and must be boiled down to at least 66% sugar content to officially be considered maple syrup. In their first year, the Hassmanns boiled the sap on their home stove. Today they have a 12'x20' sugarhouse on their property with 750 maple taps on vacuum. My family and I recently visited the Durham Sugarhouse when we happened to run out of syrup at home. We love to support local businesses and decided to check out the place. The Hassmanns' property looks like a spiderweb with thousands of feet of plastic tubing connecting the sugar maples surrounding their house. Some of the trees even belong to their neighbors, who don't mind the Hassmanns using them for syrup. We were met by Leslie Hassmann who was very friendly and told us all about their syrup operation. Traditionally the syrup operation lasts from mid-February to the end of March, but changes in temperature can affect the start time. Maple syrup can be produced when overnight temperatures dip below 25° and daytime temperatures reach 40°. 2023's milder winter allowed the Hussmanns to begin syrup-making on January 23rd. The first syrup batch of the season is very light in color. The batches continue to get darker throughout the season. Each batch is labeled by number; some people prefer lighter-colored syrup while others prefer the darker stuff. We sampled a few different batches and decided to purchase a quart of Batch #9. It is absolutely delicious and so far we've enjoyed it with pancakes and French toast! We look forward to returning to Durham Sugarhouse the next time we need more syrup!

Fisherman's Friend despite of being a newly acquired good friend, you are not easy to locate. Manufactured by Lofthouse of Fleetwood Ltd, Lancashire, England and thankfully sold in America. This Orange, CT location is Fisherman's Friend U.S.A. corporate office location. I found Fisherman's Friend products in New York's Chinatown at Hong Kong Supermarket, which I was surprisingly to encounter at an Asian grocery store when expecting to find you at a local Duane Reade or CVS thus four stars.
