I love this little gem. While the store is not large they have a huge selection of local brands and offer made to order food. I love the emphasis on giving back with their token system at checkout where you can select a charity to donate to free of charge. In the vitamin/health aisle there is generally someone there who can/will help answer any questions you may have. In general the staff is friendly and shopping is easy. A great grocer to go to for healthy options including many vegan choices. Fresh fruits and veggies and a huge section of frozen foods with a bunch of vegan choices!! They have Rebel cheese which is what brought me here ( an amazing vegan cheese by the way - the Brie is a MUST). I left with A LOT more in my cart...and was happy with everything. Thyme and Season of Hamden is one of the coolest types of health food stores in this local area. It is hard to find a healthy product they do not carry. They have quality pet food and remedies, safe cleaning, and paper products, natural organic, non-GMO, gluten-free and vegetarian foods as well as free range, meats, poultry, and artisan cheeses. There is a huge amount of inventory, and every square foot of the store is used efficiently. Their prices are reasonable, and the staff is extremely helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. They have been in business for over 25 years and are consistently a wonderful place to shop. read more

I've been here a couple of times now. It's a big store with general groceries, frozen food and supplements all geared toward being healthier. I don't see a lot of hot food other than soups. The frozen section is quite large and the store is pretty impressive. I've had a few types of the frozen food that was all quite good. Prices are typical for this type of store. I shop here weekly instead of going to a large supermarket. I like to support small, local businesses. I saw a complaint on here that they should be conscious of the high prices but I have seen prices on some of the same items higher at Whole Foods. News flash, (it's sad but true) but healthier food it just more expensive. It's not the stores fault. They pay upfront and charge enough for profit. This is how it works. This is supporting a local busihess who will circulate money back into your town and State. Another major complaint was that they did not respond to a facebook message on an issue with a receipt. Common sense- if you want direct help, call the store directly. Stop hiding behind phones. I have had instances where i've had to return a couple things over tte many years i've been going and without hesitation, showed up in person and they've had no problems returning my items. I think many people create their many problems because they feel they are entitled. "No i've helped me" or asked me if I needed help was another complaint. Do you not speak? Ask when you need help and it will bring awareness to the others that they haven't been attentive, but instead YELP is an avenue to complain. I wonder if typing all the negativity brought you the happiness you needed. A business simply cannot please everyone. Have I had frustrating moments in here? Yes, but i've also encountered frustration in other stores and i'm not about to let it make me leave a terrible review knowing it's someone's livelihood. I do not work here, know anyone who does work here or even know the owner(s). I needed to pick up some gourmet nuts as a gift for someone after work the other week (I know, a pretty niche task) but thankfully I found Thyme and Season on Whitney Ave! This grocery store is so adorable and everything is organized so nicely. I wish I had more time to spend in there, but I was able to buy nuts that were an excellent part of my gift. After many years of going to Thyme & Season (I had previously said 15 years, but it was more like 13-14), I don't expect to be going back. Ever. One thing I noticed about this place sometime after I posted my initial review, is that no one ever greets me or asks if I need help. Often I do need help, but after a few employees walk by me without saying hello or asking if I need anything, I usually just decide not to buy whatever it was that I needed. I went in today for lunch and I was going to get some sweet potato curry but no one ever asked if I needed help. I didn't realize there was a bell to ring for service, but by the time I did realize it, I was so disappointed that I could stand there for seemingly forever and no one asks if I need anything. This happens every single time. Today there was an employee eyeballing me, probably making sure I wasn't stealing anything. That's fine, I get it...but this happens often. I typically wear a black du-rag and on sunny days I wear my prescription sunglasses. If they find me to be suspicious-looking, I don't really care. I'm not going to put on my regular eyeglasses and start wearing pink scrub pants just so the store I walk into for 5 minutes thinks I look less suspicious. Today I walked up to the counter with a tower of items in my hands. I was literally balancing five items, totaling $23. When I reached the counter, the pile was teetering and the woman in line in front of me was more than 6 feet away so I stepped forward to place my items on the counter and the cashier yelled at me. She asked me to step back behind the red line (which was literally 8-10 inches behind me) and I nearly put my items down on the floor and walked out. Had I not been looking forward to their food for weeks, I would have. Then another employee stepped within 3 feet of the woman in line in front me and the cashier didn't yell at her. I asked her why she didn't yell at the other employee for standing too close and she gave me some lame excuse. All I wanted was to put my tower of food down before it fell over. I might have let this one instance of being yelled at go, but I'm so sick of going to Thyme & Season, spending however much money over 13-14 years, only to still be eyeballed for possible theft. Why? Because I wear sunglasses, a du-rag, and a lot of black clothing? Even that doesn't bother me so much, but to never once ask if I need help with anything? No thanks, I'll go somewhere else. read more

I used to drive by this lovely little market on the way to work. Always wanted to stop in. Well..still haven't made it there. I live quite awhile away. But I am delighted to say my friend who loves this place brought over some goodies. So at least I got to taste some of the food And it was delicious. They seem to have so much. Healthy Pizza, healthy snacks. Everything I tasted was amazingly good. I am now more determined then ever to actually visit here so I can have a look around. My favorite thing I tasted were these healthy cookies..I cannot even remember their name..that we had at a party for dessert. They had this buttery taste and were thin style. I guess you'd call them thin style butter cookies! I did not know cookies could taste so good unless they were the non healthy kind. I am an admitted junk food eater. B ut I was amazed at these. Aside from its punny name, Thyme & Season is a wonderful stop for all your natural and organic options. If you're looking for gluten free, vegan, free-range meat, organic, paleo, and all around health food this market probably has what you're looking for. It's a bit small inside but they pack a lot of different items in there! There's an extensive produce section as well as a whole aisle for supplements and vitamins. Proceed to the back and you'll find hot or cold to-go foods including a soup of the day. In a refrigerator area is a nice variety of food like asian-inspired take out, salads, sandwiches, and many drinks like kombucha, coconut water, etc. For lunch today I grabbed a tuna salad which was packed fresh with veggies and crisp greens. There was a box of almond cheddar crackers I can't find often so I bought those too. I wouldn't do all my grocery shopping here, but if you're looking for a specific item I suggest looking here. They have a variety of brands and many products under each brand (ie, all Epic meat bars!). Check their website for the monthly flyer with sales or deals. If you eat for wellness you probably already know about this place and I'm late to the party. But i give this 5 stars and two thumbs up. My frustration comes out of the fact that I must pay 2 to 4 times more for almost everything I eat because of my gluten bs, so its especially frustrating when a sandwich that is really really expensive is terrible, and then makes one sick. Old as in stale and outdated. What I am giving 1 star for is the way they push bags on you for one item. You are a natural store for Heaven's sake - set a precedent. I hate to leave negative reviews but after not getting the assistance on Facebook messenger that I was looking for this is what I am doing. I give it two stars for selection and cleanliness. The main reason for my poor scoring is because every time I shop in there there is a receipt error overcharging me for something that was on sale. When in the store I have been able to correct this at the register and actually the law is that I have to get that item for free. At some point in the not too distant past when I was in the store I joined their membership program and opted out of getting register receipts but I was getting them by email right away. Still with mistakes, at least one each time. The last time I never got a receipt by email. I don't know why. I communicated by Facebook messenger and email getting a response on messenger and a picture of my receipt. I also stated my concern with not getting receipts and I wanted to opt back into getting them at the register. But again this last time when I got the picture of my receipt there was a mistake for something that I purchased that was supposed to be four dollars and change and they charged me six dollars. This makes me unhappy because this is not only happening to me. This is happening to many people who may not check their receipts regularly as I do. I stated on Facebook messenger the error but never heard anything back related to this. The store really needs to do a better job for their pricing and communication with customers with concerns. read more

I visit the store about 4 times per week, every week for the last 10 years and I havent really had any problems with their products until these last few weeks. Now I dont have to tell u that NOTHING in that store is cheap or budget friendly, however I don't mind paying for something thats better in quality if I know its a better option for me. That said, I recently spend $40 on 3 damn watermelons bcuz they were organicly grown without GMO seeds and the first one tasted disgusting so I tossed it out while telling myself shit happens. Next day I buy another one and its a white-ish pink on the inside plus is hard to bite into, obviously not ripe. I go back to the store and explain what happened, then an emoyee helped me pick out a new one which I let sit for 4 days until cutting open. This time its rotten inside and has a HORRIBLE taste, i threw the entire thing away. Thats $40 worth of bad watermelon. Im not poor but I sure as hell cant afford $40 in watermelon thats for sure so I won't be purchasing fruit from there anytime soon again..... no matter which fruit I pay hefty price for at that store, it always ends up being a waste of money! Okay so first and foremost this place is no Whole Foods and its pretty unfair to compare them. I have seen a few reviews doing so and thats just not giving Thyme & Season a fair shake. This is a small store and there is only so much they can do with the square footage so don't come in and expect to find the selection at a large chain like Whole Foods. That being said I love this place and think it fills a much needed void in the health food market in the area as there is no Whole Foods. Foodworks in Cheshire doesn't do it for me so even though I live in Cheshire right next door I always happily jump in the car and head down to Hamden to Thyme & Season for my needs instead. Even though Thyme & Season is small they seem to pack a lot in and have a great selection in my opinion. Prices are fair given the products (this stuff just costs more its a fact, doesn't matter where you go) and I really enjoy checking out everything they have to offer. The food is great but the best part about this store is the supplement aisle and the fact they have literally every product you could want and there is always someone there to helpfully answer questions, its really hard to find people so knowledgeable and willing to assist at other stores. They also have a ton of skincare and beauty related products like Dr. Bronners, Badger, etc. Bonus points as the employees are super friendly and welcoming, I always ending up having a nice chat with them when I check out. I am writing this review about Thyme & Season's soup (see the following paragraph) but given that this is a grocery store and not a soup shop, there are some formalities to get through here. Thyme & Season is akin to whole foods. They've got your free-range this and your gluten-free that. They've got more granola bars then you can possibly hope to shake a stick at. If this is your thing then you have found your holy land in Hamden. I, on the other hand, am a morally depraved omnivore with the diet of a billy goat. I don't care how my food spent its time on this Earth or what chemical they've marinated it in, if it tastes good I am A-OK. To this end, I usually try to avoid places like Thyme & Season. The moral mark-up just isn't worth it for me. So how did I find myself reviewing this morally-conscious grocery store? The siren song of soup, my friends. Thyme & Season offers daily hot lunch and soup specials. It is here where they really get things right. I will step over my own mother to get a cup of their senagalese chicken peanut soup. It is that good. Seriously, stalk their web page and look for a day when it is being offered. Get in your car and plunk down the $5 for a cup and thank me after you have devoured it. The remaining options are none too shabby either. Creamy french onion soup, chicken jambalaya, and the mulligatawny all hold their own. The point is that they mix it up here and they all hit the mark. With winter coming up this is an option that you should not overlook. read more

This is a fantastic Health Market and I will always go here before Edge of the Woods, even though Edge is closer. Why, you ask? Because every time I need something and Edge of the Woods doesn't have it, they call Thyme and Season and they do or they'll order it for me and have it in a day or two. So I'll just eliminate my trip to Edge of the Woods and go to Thyme and Season instead: makes sense, right? I also love how they're organized. Unorganized health stores can be very overwhelming, especially in the remedies isle. I love that it's clearly marked, not completely overwhelming and that there is someone stationed there to help you anytime you need it. A pretty decent place for Organic food. Prices are just as high as other organic supermarkets so you really cannot complain about that. I personally feel that a lot of the stuff that is carried here can be found in a Stop and Shop in their organic section, but I saw a ton of stuff that also was not carried anywhere else that I have been. Staff put me off a bit. One of the workers was running around in a get out of my way fashion whereas the ladies in the back and at the register were extremely friendly. They put out free samples, but no one is watching them so I didn't even bother to try one. I hear their soup is to die for, but unfortunately I didn't feel like dying so I will have to take a rain check on that one. Parking lot is huge, but it is a disaster to get in and out of. If you live in the area, it is very convenient to stop by. I would definitely come back here to stock up on my organic fix, but it is not worth the weekly trip. read more
