I came to this place years ago and forgot where it was until I stumbled on it again. It's basically right across from Skull & Bones where they do whatever it is they do in there. I needed some items from the Hong Kong market and had I realized they were also sold here, I'd have waited to purchase. The energy is much more peaceful and calm and welcoming to linger and explore. They have such interesting items and if you can't figure out what something is, someone is always very eager to assist. I'm pretty sure I had one those those horrendous tasting Chinese teas made here years ago that improve whatever ailment you may be experiencing so double check on that. They also offer acupuncture and massage. It's a very sweet place I definitely recommend. A cute little block really where you can spend the day even if you're not attending a ritual. Make your own - something positive and service to others - to counter anything negative emanating from across the street. :-) read more

This place is a hole in the wall gem. Small store front with big supply of Chinese medicine inside. The owner Bill and everyone who works there are super friendly and helpful. I love asian massages. Actually prefer them over going to some fancy spa where I leave feeling about the same as I did when I first came. After searching around for a great asian spa on Yelp, I decided to give Naturegene a try. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon and realized that this isn't the type of spa where you can just walk in. They are busy and the schedule is full. However, the sweet girl at the counter managed to work me in for an hour massage. I was massaged by Rose. I have a place in my shoulder that only one masseuse has been able to get to. Rose managed to get it without my even telling her. I feel amazing. Loved that they were willing to work in the new girl for such a great experience. As I was leaving I was sure to book an appointment with Rose again. I went to Naturegene today and had a great experience with Jasmine. This was probably the first time I experienced a massage with just-perfect pressure, not too much, not too little. She definitely loosened up the knots in my back. The atmosphere, while not spa like, is nice and comfortable, better than the standard Chinatown massage room. Love the quaint store front and the herby smell of the place. The missing star is for the cupping- I realized she was going to cup me only when I felt the glass cup on my back. I was vaguely aware of the technique and waited until I was on my back to ask her about it. But given that cupping causes vivid bruises, a heads up, if not a proper consent, should be the practice. I'm pretty open to new experiences, and the cupping did help with the knots in my lower neck. I'll be back. read more

I've been stuck by needles all over New Haven, but really found Dr. Jing Du to be a great acupuncture doctor. Although her English is not completely fluent, she has a great bedside manner and has utter professionalism and deep understanding of acupuncture. She was an internal medical doctor in China and also worked at Yale and Harvard, so she has experience and knowledge of both Eastern and Western medicine. The Tui Na massages offered at Naturegene are also fantastic. To be clear, there are NO frills here (e.g. candles, waterfalls, tantric music). Just good straightforward treatment. I had a terrible experience with Dr. Gao and would not recommend him for acupuncture or massage. He has absolutely no bedside manner and proceeded to discuss (in detail) medical problems of two friends who had referred me while I was on the table. He was also insistent that I am missing one of my cervical vertebrae, which makes absolutely no sense. I do not know much about his credentials, but I was unimpressed by his medical knowledge and very put off by the pressure he put on me to purchase herbal medications from him. This was the most bizarre massage experience. No questions prior re. Injuries or special needs and no questions re. What I needed. The language barrier was pretty total and every effort to communicate what I wanted (work on my lower legs and feet) was not understood. I ultimately got off the table, paid and left early. Dr. Du may be a great acupuncturist and Chinese medicine doctor, but beware of her version of acupressure. She uses hard instruments rather than fingers and has left me with huge and deep bruises that will take weeks to mend. I didn't see it coming as I believed I was going for acupuncture. Dr. Gao has healed several of us in our family. Understanding his english is difficult, but that is a minimal probllem for what he has done to help us. I had terrible bursitis in my shoulders 6 years ago. For months, I could only sleep about 4 hours a night. He told me he could help me with three visits, which I doubted. After 3 painful visits, I have been pain-free ever since He also helped my husband's shoulder tremendously after a weight-lifting injury. One of my children had a muscle spasm in her neck and cried for a week. She couldn't turn her head more than about two inches. During that week, we went to the medical doctor three times, to no avail. After one treatment by Dr. Gao, she woke up about 70% better the next day and was back to normal the next. After a bout of mono, my daughter had lingering, excruciatingly painful headaches. Pain meds didn't touch them. After one treatment and a week of chinese herbals, she didn't have another headache. Each experience has been a positive one. I can't say whether or not he is experienced in every area, but he has been a healer in each one of our cases. read more
