We hired A Real Good Plumber (Paul Shay) in July 2026 under a signed $4,000 contract to restore gas…read moreservice to our three-family building in the Bronx - a building sitting without gas, with tenants displaced. The signed contract required a $2,000 "startup payment," which we paid, and included filing the required LAA with the NYC Dept. of Buildings, which he confirmed in writing would be filed within five business days. Twenty-nine days later, the LAA was never filed. Instead, after a site visit, he sent new contracts nearly tripling the price - then claimed the new price was "in addition to" the signed contract, and finally claimed our $2,000 startup payment was actually a "site visit fee," something that appears nowhere in any document he wrote. We terminated for non-performance and demanded the refund; as of this review it has not been returned. Every claim in this review is supported by the signed contract, payment records, and his own emails. I renovated my home and decided I didn't want a steam boiler and individual large air conditioners…read morealong with steam radiators for heat but still needed both Heat and Cooling. I contacted Amerikhomes and made an appointment for Leon to swing by to get an opinion on a new system. He came on time and recommended a mini split system as the solution which would be my primary source for both heating and cooling. We agreed on a system and moved forward with the installation. He ran the piping/wiring and drainage for the units in each room but didn't mount the units until the sheetrock was up. Once the sheetrock was up, he mounted the units and brazed the piping. He advised fittings was not the way to go because as time passes, it may produce a leak and because all the piping is inside the wall, it'll be very difficult to get to whereas brazing is more a permanent connection so he sealed each location via brazing. This was not a 1 time visit. The installation required a multitude of visits to complete. Once everything was installed and ready to be powered on, we went ahead and briefly tested it. The A/C was blowing ice cold and the Heat was nice and warm. No issues during the summer with the A/C but when winter came, a serious problem started to occur. In heat mode, the defrost came on which in itself is not unusual but what was is the fact that it would not turn off. The defrost cycle continued to run to the point where the inside units would start building up frost and ice and the only way for the unit to start heating up again was if you turned off all the indoor units and turned them back on. I contacted Leon to inform him and he couldn't find any issues with his work and that it has to be the unit. Justifiably, he will have to charge me to troubleshoot the unit to pinpoint the problem. For months, Leon and the vendor went back and fourth pointing out the possible causes for the issue but the vendor continued blaming Leon's work and Leon kept explaining that the issue was with the unit so they would not pay him to troubleshoot the unit itself. At this point, we were at the "tail end" of winter and ended up putting up with powering down all the units and powering them back on when the defrost issue started. It took months back and fourth with the vendor and manufacturer that winter had already passed and heat was no longer needed. Towards the end of summer I decided to take matters into my own hands and go based on what Leon mentioned to me being possible causes. he told me that it could be one of 3 things. Either a bad thermistor, a bad controller board or not enough Freon. Well, I know the charge was good because Leon had tested the unit countless times in front of me and the PSI was the same each time. I started with the cheapest item which was to purchase 3 thermistors. Tested each new thermistor and swapped them out. Upon testing the old ones, I found them to be functioning correctly but decided to leave the new ones in place anyways. Well... If the Thermistors were good and the PSI was within range, then the only other item according to Leon is the Controller board but would have to pay out of pocket since the manufacturer would not take responsibility and would charge me $678.00 for the controller. Keep in mind that i already spent thousands on the unit and the installation just to spend spend loads more on an expensive part for a brand new unit less than 1 year old. I refuse to further fund the manufacturer and decided to get the part on my own. I found a controller board from china for less than half the cost the manufacturer charged me. The part arrived ~ 3 weeks after I purchased it and went ahead that same day to swap it out. I took pictures of each part to make sure I put everything in the right place once disassembled. Long story short, I completed the swap. Also had to "de-bug" the system for it to recognize the indoor units. The whole process took me a good 3 hours. It was not cold enough to test because the temps outside were in the mid 60's so I had to wait until it got colder to turn the heat on. 3 weeks have passed where the heat needed to be used and finally started using the heater. After crossing my fingers, the unit, after 4 hours of being ran went into defrost (as it should) but came out of it as it supposed to do. It has been 3 months and not a single time did the defrost get stuck. LEON WAS RIGHT! Despite not charging me for the work/advice, he gave me the information to figure out what the problems could be. I have to say Leon was excessively patient during this whole headache and charged me not a penny more than the cost for the installation. Most installers would have said "everything on my end is good. Good luck dealing with the manufacturer" but Leon stuck around through the rough patches. He is fair on price, knowledgeable and patient. I will always use him for future reference anything HVAC related... I advise/recommend you to do the same.

Those I know are really long lasting" he said it will eventually erode, I said but it's not right now..he kept pressing that, that was part of the problem. I don't think it was since clearly the hole was but whatever, annoyed about that. I was charged $550. After he left I noticed it was still leaking and NOW it was clogging! I called them again the next day and informed the boss Tom, he sent over Kenny again this time with a partner, I forgot his name but he was much younger, more friendly, he also seemed more knowledgeable because he right away was pointing out things and I can see instantly he didn't like that and it made Kenny looked bad. Kenny changed the pipes and drain again and kept ordering the younger guy, but when we saw it was leaking again, the younger assistant asked if he can see the area, try something Kenny ignored him and didn't let him do anything but fetch tools for him and the assistant kept asking to see, I got annoyed and said "WILL YOU LET HIM LOOK?" like curb your ego dude! So the younger guy said what could be the issue and Kenny refused to acknowledge it and somehow managed to stop it by changing the drain and pipe again, he said the boss has to charge me for the new drain that he put in, that was weird to me since he didn't fix what he initially came to do the first day but whatever I wanted him done and out already. So an $225 and the next day LEAKING AGAIN! I called the boss and told him how upset I was after paying $800 total my BRASS drain and pipe removed (which I think was taken for themselves) it STILL hasn't been fixed and I was totally pissed and not satisfied. I asked how long has Kenny worked for them because the guy doesn't know what he's doing clearly and he's got an ego & wouldn't allow the young assistant to have a look at it, despite pointing out the issues. Tom was a little snippy when he should have taken accountability for charging so much for shi*tty work & sending over an incompetent person who should have retired honestly. It finally was fixed for good, when I demanded for someone else and NOT be charged a 3rd time!!

During the Halloween snowstorm of 2011 when we went to turn on our heat we discovered that the pilot in the furnace was not lit and that we needed a plumber. It being the weekend I set out to find a 24 hour plumber. Igor picked up the phone immediately when I called and told me he could come over in a few hours (he gave a 1 hour range). He asked me to text him my address and said he'd call when he was on his way. He was prompt and professional. It turned out we needed a new furnace. Igor purchased the furnace for us and installed it the following day. Everything was clean when he left and the work was well done. Later that winter Igor added a gas line for our dryer and installed it for us. We left him the keys to the house so that he could work while we were at work. He locked up and even texted me a picture of the completed job before he left. He came back the following evening to pick up the check from us, double check that we were happy with the work, and dropped off a bottle of wine as a thank you for our business as his business was celebrating an anniversary (he also brought an ice cream cake for me since I was pregnant at the time :) ). A few weeks ago I called Igor again because of an emergency. It was a Sunday morning and he immediately picked up when I called and knew who I was and had my address. My husband had gone to move the gas dryer and stove out of the house and into our new house, but he wasn't able to get the gas shut off at the stove because the hardware was too old. Igor arrived very soon after I called him and was able to get the gas shut off and wouldn't accept any payment for his time. I would absolutely call Igor again with any plumbing issues.

After dealing with two other plumbers who don't return calls, show up late or not at all, etc. it was so refreshing to work with someone reliable. He provided a fair quote to switch out a bathroom vanity sink with a new one I'd purchased after looking at pictures of my existing plumbing and the new pedestal I needed installed. Note that his quotes are set for a job including materials, not the usual time + materials situation you see with most contractors. Again, he knows what he's doing and the transparency is a breath of fresh air. The morning of our appointment he showed up 20 minutes early, focused on finishing the work, got it done within the expected window (this included a quick run to Home Depot for supplies), and left the bathroom looking tidy. Robert was polite and answered questions about other work I might need to have done in the future - I wouldn't hesitate to call him again for those projects. While it wasn't included in my initial quote, he was kind enough to call helpers to bring the old sink down the stairs of my walkup building. Thanks for a job well done!
