Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue - Ryno, the wonder Cavalier!

    Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue

WOW! I finally hit 500!…read more I wanted to make this review special--something that's close to my heart (just like my other 100 markers!). For those of you who know me, know that I love my pooch Ryno. He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and yes, is treated like royalty. I have yet to meet a Cavalier that hasn't been sweet, awesome, and overall just a great catch! I have not adopted from this rescue, but know people who have, I've also met a few people affiliated with the rescue at various meet ups and dog shows throughout IL and even WI. :-) You couldn't ask for a bunch of better people! Here's a little about their mission (taken from their website): GCCR's mission is to help ensure the health and security of abused, abandoned, and otherwise endangered Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by rehabilitating and placing Cavaliers from shelters and similar situations, by assisting breeders and owners in finding new homes for their Cavaliers, and by providing to the public educational materials and consultation regarding Cavalier health and care. The growing popularity of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels has prompted increased breeding by unscrupulous breeders and puppy mills. This development suggests that owners' concerns about health as well as the number of Cavaliers in need will only grow. Placement of Cavaliers in new homes without appropriate, knowledgeable veterinary testing may result in unforeseen, serious heartaches for new owners. The GCCR as well as other dedicated Cavalier rescuers and owners are here to help.

I can't believe I hadn't reviewed Adopt previously. My dear sweet Calliecakes is from this shelter,…read moreso I am forever grateful that they rescued her. My parents saw her at the shelter back in 2012 and texted me her photo (because they knew I wanted a cat), and I was like "yes absolutely I want her I will come get her." And the rest is history -- it's been 11 great years with my bestie (and hopefully many more). And then a year later, almost to the day, my parents were like "hey let's go to Adopt" the day after Thanksgiving and they ended up getting a cat (their second) for themselves. I haven't been back to the shelter since 2013 when I went with them when they decided to get their cat, but at that time the shelter was super nice and they had several rooms where cats could roam free. It was a nice, no-stress situation to be able to sit on a sofa or on the floor and have the cats come check you out. So many snuggles. And I follow them on Instagram and they continue to do great work and care deeply for the animals they rescue. Definitely check them out if you are looking for a new best friend! And now enjoy the cat photo spam/cat tax :)

A couple of us met her once at a public event - I nor the other person ever saw her a 2nd time after that. She is never around - enjoys barking orders via electronic means at the volunteers. You have to cancel 24 hrs before coming in, and if you have a last-minute family emergency, there is no guarantee that the people you notify will relay the message. There is a clique-ish environment developing there, too. They gossip and talk about people behind their backs. Please adopt from a private shelter that actually values their volunteers and wants to you to get a cat or dog that matches your life situation. I adore the dogs there, just not the humans who are running the show.

Sent this email to Michelle**** I called her the day we had…read moreto put our newly adopted pet down and she said regarding not being given information our cat had FIV and told after we signed "Sorry, we were probably busy". ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am emailing this to share my experience in adopting from the humane society. Seven weeks ago, my family came into the humane society looking for a pet . We had our eyes set on Blaze. Online it listed some information about him and I was immediately drawn to him. No health information was listed at all. He was with a volunteer and her child, who were looking to adopt but he was hiding from them. We walked in and he immediately ran to my children to play with them. They spent the next HOUR bonding with Blaze. The other party was interested in him- but I begged the volunteer to share with them why we really wanted Blaze. Last year we had three deaths, a murder , an eviction for my sister as well as three family members diagnosed with life threatening disease. This cat was going to heal our hearts and we were going to give him all the love we had left. Ultimately the volunteer chose to look at another cat. It was not busy that day. It was a Friday at noon. As we signed his papers the volunteer said "oh. Did I tell you? Blaze has FIV" She did not tell us. Nobody did. I realize that is not a death sentence but this should be shared online as well as BEFORE children especially are introduced to the pet. After bonding - what was I supposed to do??? Blaze was given every ounce of love we had for 7 weeks. Unfortunately, suddenly (as I have been told 1000 times with FIV cats), he started vomiting while I was at work and having massive diarrhea. Bouts of ten times in 20 mins. He had an underlying stomach infection that had been there for months according to my Vet...(a well known and respected vet in Naperville) I left work and rushed him to our vet . After several tests, She told me he was really sick and prognosis was not in his favor. Blaze was euthanized that day. He was only 2..... I can't believe it happened. I can't even begin to tell you the extreme amount of additional pain this caused my family. This has me thinking twice about ever adopting a pet for our family again. And I would never return HERE I am really upset by the heartache this caused our family and even moreso by the lack of communication of important details on behalf of the volunteer/ staff that day. I am thankful we had him- bc I question the fact that we weren't told for a reason and he would have died alone in a cage. Wish this story had a better ending- especially for Blaze...

It is so helpful to have someone you can ask questions of, to reassure and comfort you at a fraught and emotional time. Every criteria we had was met and exceeded: we wanted Maggie to feel no fear, to have unhurried time with her, to have a clear understanding of what was going to happen, to say goodbye on our terms. Maggie simply and immediately accepted Dr. Kriner's presence, decided she welcomed pets and affection from this sweet person she had never met. The only focus was Maggie, to have her feel complete love surrounding her, to let her enjoy cheeseburgers and chocolate, pets, hugs, kisses, many words of love, to make certain she knew exactly how special she was and always would be and that we were grateful for her life with us. There is no avoiding how heartbreaking a time it is, but to have a precious fur baby handled with love, calmness, gentleness, respect and care is an enormous comfort. We are so profoundly grateful for Dr. Kriner. She returned Maggie's ashes to us with the same compassion with which Maggie left our home. We are unspeakably touched by every aspect of interaction with Dr. Jessica Kriner of Compassionate Heart.

I don't know how it happened, but it did…read more I lost my beloved Gordon almost 5 years ago. When I moved to Chicago in 2018 I immediately put in applications for the English Bulldog rescues. I knew it would be a long process, I didn't expect it to be impossible. One of them denied my application because of their income guidelines that evidently only Jay-Z could qualify for, but ONLY if Beyoncé co-signs the deal. When I was really really ready to have a dog in my life early last year, I applied to foster with another local bully rescue. We had a great phone interview, they claimed to be "impressed" with me, but they don't allow people in high-rises to foster. Some of the dogs don't like elevators. Why we went through that whole process when they could see my address, I don't know. I started researching breeders. Another undertaking that would likely take me years to find a good one and wait for the litter. It wasn't part of my regular routine at all, but I decided to go on pet finder one day and I saw this meatball at a rescue, recently listed. I applied right away. When I didn't get a confirmation e-mail that they received it, I called the next day. I was told that they'd rejected me because this love bug needs a family. Vicki didn't seem insulted when I told her that I know she knows what's best for her animals, but to please reconsider. I didn't expect to hear back. 20 minutes later i had a date to meet the guy the next day. And he's a dreamboat, so I was ready to kidnap him anyway but his two care takers decided we'd be a good fit. I wasn't the first applicant, or the only good one, either, I was told afterwards. Sorry everyone else! His name is Norman. He's about 3 years old. His limited history made it clear that his last "home" wasn't ideal. He was dumped at a dog pound, was found by someone connected to this rescue, and they bailed him out. My intuition tells me that he wasn't anyone's pet. He was likely used for breeding (he was neutered just before I got to take him home.) He couldn't get enough affection, attention, or enough to eat. He loves any soft surfaces and when he got his own bed, he looked like he won the lottery. It's been just over two months and this guy has come so far and has made me so proud of him. He's confident enough to not run over for attention just because I look at him. He leaves food in his bowl! He's learned how to play with his toys, people, and he's recently gotten playful with his friends from the dog run at my building. He was always a sweet boy from the moment we met, but he's learning to be a dog, it seems. He still uses me for a napkin whenever he wants, which is right on track. Dogs are the best. This guy had no reason to like anyone, but he can't help himself. He's a people person. He is a notorious party crasher if we happen to be walking by one in one of the lobby areas. He had no reason to trust me, but he does. And that brings me more joy than I can possibly express. I thank the hard rescue workers for what they do every day. For dogs like mine, and for the ones who don't get the lives they deserve. Thank you. Thank you. to trust me
