It is very clear that everyone at this shelter is passionate about helping animals find safe, happy homes, and about supporting families after adoption as well. I've had dogs my whole life and when I filled out their paperwork I was of the opinion the only reason I might return a dog would be aggression or if my personal financial situation changed dramatically. The fostering system gave me a much better idea of what I was committing to in this case. My wife, kiddo, and I all came to meet the dog we thought we wanted and after that went well we took her home. It became immediately clear that this girl had not been indoors or socialized very much, if ever. I was very surprised to have essentially a 70lb puppy on my hands. This was more work than I expected, and it was more work than my family expected, but knowing we had time to work with her as a foster in our home environment provided a lot of confidence in seeing how it went. Almost Home was in regular contact to check in with us and provided us with enrichment toys, advice, and resources for taking her to training classes. There was never pressure to keep her, and it was always clear everybody was only interested in what was best for the animal. After a few weeks she was improving, but still more work than I expected, and Almost Home was happy to let us continue to foster until everybody was sure this would be a good fit. Our girl kept improving and we committed to the adoption. Eventually we were able to return our home to normal, and do so free of concerns things would be destroyed. The time and space that was provided to be sure this would all work out resulted in one of the best bonds I've ever had with a dog. We're inseparable these days, and we owe it to the support Almost Home and their volunteers offered throughout the process.

I can't believe I hadn't reviewed Adopt previously. My dear sweet Calliecakes is from this shelter,…read moreso I am forever grateful that they rescued her. My parents saw her at the shelter back in 2012 and texted me her photo (because they knew I wanted a cat), and I was like "yes absolutely I want her I will come get her." And the rest is history -- it's been 11 great years with my bestie (and hopefully many more). And then a year later, almost to the day, my parents were like "hey let's go to Adopt" the day after Thanksgiving and they ended up getting a cat (their second) for themselves. I haven't been back to the shelter since 2013 when I went with them when they decided to get their cat, but at that time the shelter was super nice and they had several rooms where cats could roam free. It was a nice, no-stress situation to be able to sit on a sofa or on the floor and have the cats come check you out. So many snuggles. And I follow them on Instagram and they continue to do great work and care deeply for the animals they rescue. Definitely check them out if you are looking for a new best friend! My Experience as a Prospective Foster -- Timeline…read more July 25: I applied to become a foster and prepared my foster room so it would be ready for inspection. July 26: I received an email stating I had been accepted. I contacted the references I provided and learned that neither had actually been contacted. I was also not subjected to a phone interview, home inspection, foster training, or other screening that I have experienced with other organizations. At the time, this didn't concern me because I was eager to get started. July 29: The intake team welcomed me, and I explained that my daughter, who would be doing approximately 50% of the bottle-baby care, would be unavailable until August 10 while overseas. I was told this would be fine and that a litter would be pulled from animal control on August 11, brought to the Wheaton shelter for an intake exam, and then made available for me to pick up there. I was excited because I specifically chose this organization due to its location. August 3: I was asked if I could take two neonatal kittens. I explained that I could not start until August 10, as previously discussed. I was also told they may have already been committed to me, although I cannot confirm that. August 7: I followed up and was told the intake person had taken two kittens herself, despite previously telling me she already had six kittens in her incubator. I don't know the circumstances, but based on my previous fostering experience, adding more neonates to an already full incubator raised concerns for me. I was also told that the litter I had expected on August 11 had already been transferred. August 11: My anticipated start date came and I received no communication about a litter. August 12: I followed up and was told there were no kittens available. I was then asked to take two older kittens. I understand that every kitten needs a foster, but I specifically requested neonates because I have incubators and other equipment that can be particularly beneficial to neonatal kittens. I had also been told I would be fostering neonates. Later that day, I was told neonatal kittens were available but that I would need to drive to Chicago to pick them up. This was problematic because I am new to the area and specifically chose the Wheaton organization for its location and my unfamiliarity with city driving. My phone then broke, so communication stopped temporarily. August 15: I got a new phone, contacted them, and apologized for the communication gap. They were understanding, which I appreciated. August 18: I was contacted about taking two neonates and asked if I could meet someone in Oak Park. I agreed. They later arranged for transportation to Wheaton, which I appreciated, and I began preparing to pick up the kittens. Before doing so, another foster contacted me with concerns about the organization's medical practices. They described issues involving illnesses such as panleukopenia, Giardia, fleas, and ringworm allegedly circulating through the shelter, as well as concerns about containment and treatment. I recognize that this information came from another foster and that I cannot personally verify every claim. However, it concerned me enough to research the organization further. After reading numerous reviews describing cats being sent home or returned with illnesses and other medical concerns, I became increasingly uncomfortable moving forward, particularly with vulnerable neonatal kittens. I contacted the owner to ask questions about the concerns that had been raised and to give the organization an opportunity to explain its medical protocols. Unfortunately, I felt the response was very rude, hostile, and defensive, which further contributed to my decision. Ultimately, I chose not to continue fostering with this organization. I am sharing my personal experience and clearly distinguishing it from information I was told by another foster. I cannot verify everything I heard and do not want to present rumors as facts. However, fostering neonatal kittens is a significant responsibility. I need to have complete confidence in an organization's medical protocols, communication, transparency, and support before placing vulnerable kittens in my care. After this experience, I no longer felt comfortable doing so, and I decided it was best to withdraw from the foster program.

They were very patient and very accommodating of my calling and scheduling visits to the kennel to see the pups. We worked with Laura and her husband, Steve, and they were so helpful and nice, and even fostered Molly for us before she came home. Word of warning: beware when taking adoptable dogs to events! You may just end up falling in love and bringing them home. That's how we ended up with #2 (Jet) six months after Molly. Thank god our condo has a pet limit, or we'd probably have a dozen more.

We contacted a member of GO to arrange for another greyhound family to take Blast. Everyone we ever met there was dedicated to making Greyhound life awesome so it was a no brainer. We had the interview session w/ a nice family and the member from GO. Worst day of my life. Period. Long story short, the gut wrenching decision to remove my first boy from my home, from my family was only made worse at that GO member's decision to make us feel like we were essentially criminals. I expected some sort of push back given the cult nature of the greyhound community but to take to facebook and write negatively about the home he just came from, that was a bit too much. He had an amazingly large yard, 2 beds, a couch and two loving parents that took him everywhere and gave him everything he could ever want. He had as many toys as my son. He had more beds than the family combined. His birthday was celebrated, every year. I carried him up and down our 14 stairs to bed for months while he recovered from an injury so he could sleep in his usual spot, between my legs I have a piece of me gone and it aint coming back anytime soon. I still gave two stars because the people are awesome and what they do is fantastic and I do not think Trina Grosse speaks for the entire organization.

For those of you who know me, know that I love my pooch Ryno. He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and yes, is treated like royalty. I have yet to meet a Cavalier that hasn't been sweet, awesome, and overall just a great catch! I have not adopted from this rescue, but know people who have, I've also met a few people affiliated with the rescue at various meet ups and dog shows throughout IL and even WI. :-) You couldn't ask for a bunch of better people! Here's a little about their mission (taken from their website): GCCR's mission is to help ensure the health and security of abused, abandoned, and otherwise endangered Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by rehabilitating and placing Cavaliers from shelters and similar situations, by assisting breeders and owners in finding new homes for their Cavaliers, and by providing to the public educational materials and consultation regarding Cavalier health and care. I did try a Camp BowWow up here and was not happy with it and I was leaning towards 'in house' dog watchers. I found Pet Sitting On The Run and scheduled a visit to meet Lydia and have her meet my dogs and cats. She came over to my house and was extremely professional. Explained all of her services and costs. I have two challenging dogs...one is a jackrussel mix that is not really fond of anyone and a shar pei that has huge amounts of anxiety when my husband leaves him plus I have a 14 year old cat that gets thyroid pills twice a day. Love, love love her services!!!!! Never have I ever worried that anything inappropriate was happening to my pets or my house while I am away. If there is a problem with my pets, she texts me right away. I am fully confident that she can handle any situation with the animals which allows me to be away and not constantly worry about everything back home. If there is medication to be given, they also will administer it. My next door neighbor girls always ask me if they can dog sit while I'm gone and it would be less money but as long as Pet Sitting On The Run is in business....I will continue to use their services because my pets are worth the money to be taken care of properly, professionally and stay in the comfort of your own.
