We visited here on a weekday evening having been out for a scenic drive. Auldhouse is a tiny wee village & the pub is the only amenity on the main street.
Inside its small & cosy, really homely. The staff were welcoming and settled us quickly in a table without a prior booking.
I knew what I wanted straight away. Ramsays of Carluke Ham, Mash & Buttered Cabbage. When it arrived I was immediately disappointed, as I could tell just from looking at it that it was sorely overcooked. There was only 1 slice of the ham, a small amount of mash & cabbage. Given that this dish was from the main menu I would have expected a bigger portion. There was also no sauce/gravy which emphasised how dry the ham really was. Poor!
Martyn had the fish and chips with tartare sauce. He actually really enjoyed it and said he would get it again.
My son is soooo fussy. I don't know how I managed to have a fussy eater when I eat absolutely ANYTHING, but there you go! He, as usual, ordered chicken goujons & chips. When it arrived it was actually a plain chicken breast in gravy with chips. We could have asked to change it but we didn't want to wait any longer. He tucked in, and ate 2 or 3 bits before declaring it 'tasted funny'. As he's a fussy eater I assumed that he was making excuses not to eat it, but when I tried it I actually thought the same thing. The gravy had a weird, bitter taste and the chicken was also dry and overcooked.
Needless to say we passed on desserts. I remember going to the Auldhouse Arms years ago with family and their food was fantastic. It seems it's went downhill and I doubt we'll be back. read more
