On a rainy Sunday, we found ourselves in Eaglesham with a hunger for some hearty pub grub. Rather than go with the obvious Eglinton Arms, we decided to try out the Swan Inn.
Recently under new management, upon entering The Swan you'd be forgiven for thinking you were on the set of Emmerdale. A pokey wee place, filled with locals and families it really is reminiscent of a soap land pub!
To the back of the pub up the stairs is a small dining room with about 8 tables. We were presented with a small menu filled with interesting and unusual offerings.
For starters, I went with the Scallops & Chorizo in a White Wine Cream Sauce. 4/5 huge, juicy scallops were as soft as butter. The sauce wasn't too winey and combined with the spice of the chorizo beautifully. At only around £5 this starter was a complete bargain, it would easily cost at least £9 in the city centre. Martyn went with the Chicken goujons which were clearly made in house, with a BBQ dip. The chicken was soft and the breading was deliciously crisp. He polished off the lot in jig time.
For my main I decided on ribeye steak, something I rarely do outside of a dedicated steak restaurant. However the steak arrived beautifully pink and tender with hand cut chips, tomatoes and mushrooms. It was really tasty, my only wee quibble would be that there were no sauces on offer to accompany it. Martyn decided to try something a bit different and went with Pan Fried Seabass on a Potato Rosti with Samphire and a butter shrimp sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked and the saltiness of the Samphire went perfectly with it. A really great effort for a small local pub!
Barely able to breathe but still unable to resist puddings, we decided on the Warm Chocolate Brownie and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. The brownie was warm and fudgy, slightly undercooked on the inside but crispy on the top (just the way it should be). With good quality ice cream it was a lovely treat. The Sticky Toffee was similar to that of any other restaurant (it's a bit overdone now), not to say the plate wasn't cleaned though!
Including drinks the bill came to roughly £39. A lovely lunch away from the busy town, perfect for rainy Sundays. read more
