She was telling me that is the office policy to charge the customer the out of pocket ahead of time, even though I said to her that our PPO doesn't have a copay, but I paid anyways. A month later a get an EOB from my insurance that they had covered everything at a 100% including the office visit. ( interesting that on top of the test, which was what I made the appointment for, they charge an office visit) It took me several calls and voicemails left that they needed to refund the copay they charged me ahead of time. If it wasn't for the EOB I received from my insurance, I wouldn't know that they paid fully. I believe that the office should have either called me to let me know that my insurance pays it all and therefore they would send me a check with the amount they charged me ahead of time ( office policy) or just send me a check with a note showing that they were paid by my insurance and returning the copay they charge ahead of time per office policy. That really rubbed me in the wrong way. It felt that they would have kept my money if I didn't go after it. So, a couple weeks ago I made an appointment for my husband and explain what had happened to me and asked them to please send it directly to the insurance and don't charge ahead of time as I didn't want to have to run after them to collect the fee they have a policy to charge. My husband primary is Medicare and secondary is a PPO. He paid as per policy, even though I had explained to the lady at the reception what had happened before and she said that she understood. I just got off the phone with her, who was extremely rude and had an awful attitude. I asked if she could please send the receipt to our insurance showing the payment. She rudely said they don't do that and told me that I said to her that she didn't know how to do her job. I never ever said that. I said that it was upsetting that k had to keep calling them to get my money back as they were paid by my insurance. Anyways, I tried to use them again. Big mistake! Will never be setting foot at the Lakeshore location again and will make sure to tell friends and family to stay away. I think the lady in the front desk would be better off working at the DMV as a clerk. It would suit her much better.

I've been hearing impaired since I was sixteen. I started wearing hearing aids at 26, mostly…read morebecause I was in denial. What finally drove me to getting something done was my friends of friends telling my friends that I was 'Nice, but a little slow'. So I got a hand-me-down pair of linear aids from my Mom. That was in 1990. Since that time, I've let go of the denial and the vanity issues and being a technical person, took a deep dive into the auditory world of hearing aids. I've owned easily a half dozen aids in the past almost 30 years and literally tried every major evolution of hearing aid technology. I used to have my old audiologists give me the hardware and software to program them because I got to know it better. Point being, I know this world. It sucks to be hard-of-hearing, but its even worse when you don't have the professional help to get what you need. Susanna Storm is that help. She's been my (and now my Mom's) audiologist for four years and she has helped me explore every iteration of technology that has come on the market. She's as up-to-speed as you can get, and I know I'm getting the best tech possible. All that said, the other side of audiology from the client side is how much your audiologist cares. I've had audiologist fall asleep on me, mix up my hearing loss with others, or just completely miss diagnose or fit me. Susanna and all the staff at Whisper are wonderful. They know me, know my hearing loss, know what I need and do their very best to get me to hear better. It's a subtle thing, hearing better. There is no silver bullet. It's all about incremental steps towards better hearing... and it's not easy to do and requires a ton of patience. Susannah has that patience and she and her crew have taken me down almost every road possible, and have been fun, enthusiastic and empathetic in the process. If you need someone who will help you, Susanna and her team are it. They sure as hell have helped me.

On recommendation I ordered acrylic extensions to house my hearing aids. (extensions allow deeper placement of the hearing aid into the auditory canal.) The soft, plastic extensions deteriorated, peeling, then cracked in half in just a few days. The salesperson, Joanne Brenner, ordered a 2nd set of extensions, also made of soft plastic. The 2nd set failed just like the first. This time I told Joanne to order hard acrylic instead of soft plastic. During these weeks; I went without hearing aids. When I asked the receptionist at Kenwood Hearing; she told me Joanne had ordered them, that "it just takes time to make them". After 2 weeks, not hearing from Joanne, despite sending several emails and leaving messages; I chose to see an accredited audiologist at Stanford Audiology who contacted the manufacturer, Oticon. Oticon told him there weren't any hearing aid extensions on order for me. He immediately ordered hard acrylic ones, and said he only used hard acrylic for his patients because "the soft acrylic is known to deteriorate." I suggest, if you go to Kenwood Hearing in El Cerrito Plaza, that you avoid Joanne Brenner and choose someone who won't demonstrate indifference to your hearing needs, nor leave you without usable hearing aids indefinitely.

Hearing aids are very expensive and are most likely not covered through most insurance. I have Hearing loss and obviously need Hearing aids. I haven't been able to dish the money out for new ones, so I have a pair of Hearing aids that were given to me by my father. He's 83 yrs old, veteran. Had this pair of Hearing aids that were sitting around for a year and not being used, issued to my father from the V.A. I was told over the phone it was no problem to bring them in and help me get them fixed so I could use them for myself. Im sure I am not the only person that has ever inherited Hearing aids from their veteran family members.....so waited 2 weeks for a appointment, when I arrived it was typical, polite at the desk, first time paper work etc....then the so called professional specialist that loves to help people...really didn't want to help me at all. Instead wanted to lecture me about taxes?? Really??starting saying that I basically shouldn't have these Hearing aids and they are the V.A.s property? Then starts to tell me she pays taxes and the Hearing aids should have been returned by my father if he wasn't using them. Really and that was going to help your tax break??? A pair of Hearing aids?? First of all we all pay taxes and my father definitely paid a tax for his service one way or another. The real issue was that someone like myself, randomly pick this place based off good reviews so I could walk in and get the help needed regardless of the story behind the Hearing aids or how I have them. I had a pair fixed before for me somewhere else, those were VA issued as well, no problems. Then there was lots of excuses why she couldn't fix them and different prices all over the map..so I'm sure they will help you possibly..but don't forget your taxes !! What a joke!! Don't waste you time or money into this organization. I went to ADVANCED INSTRUMENTS hearing aid services in vallejo. They were extremely nice, helped me for very reasonable price, fixed my hearing aids regardless from how I received them and most importantly they didn't pull that TRUMP CARD!!.......so you decide

At the end of our paid consultation, I shared that I would do my homework and follow up. When I shared via email that I was seeing quite a bit of pricing variance online, East Bay Hearing immediately dropped the price from $7K to $5K. When I did further online research, and shared screenshots documenting that the Oticon Intent 1 was available for $3399 one place and $4445 at another place, they said they would try to price match. They later communicated they could not go lower than $5000. If they had been willing to improve their pricing even a little (to, say, $4800), as a sign of good faith, we would have likely gone with them (their location and service was appealing to us) but their hard line stance on the $5K (coupled with the fact their original quote of $7K was nearly 30% higher than their second quote of $5K - which they offered up as soon as I shared my benchmarks, suggesting they're regularly overcharging folks who are not skilled at online price benchmarking), turned me off.

In the hearing aid arena functioning 15 year old aids are not that common I'm told. So the problem is finding an outfit that has the ribbon cables to connect to the computer to make adjustments. The place prior to this had no idea what they were doing and finally after coming in a 2nd time figured it out. This time I wanted to make sure they knew what they were doing and had the tools to do it. After calling multiple places in the bay area I finally found one who said they could do it. I questioned them repeatedly regarding this because I didn't want another waste of time like in the past. HearingLife delivered. Not only was the hearing test the most extensive I have ever had but the programming the aids was quick and efficient. Granted aids this old did require a call to Oticon which was resolved fast. After hooking them up the program makes the changes. I asked about other tweaks but at this point my hearing is so bad I'm at the end of what theses aids can do. I opted for the 1 year service plan which covers visits, cleanings, 12 month supply of batteries, domestic and wax guards. Since my bill was $370 for this visit it wasn't a huge leap to go for the service plan at $425. I thought about doing the 3 year plan but I really dont think these aids will serve me well after another year. I noticed some of the reviewers had issues with this place and believe those represent earlier individuals. Overall, the staff was great. Making an appointment from start to finish was via text, kids these days. In the room where aids are actually programed Ella had a full inventory of wires, domes, guards, etc at her disposal which was impressive given past experiences elsewhere where practitioners had little inventory and had no idea what they had or where it was. Overall, Ella did a great job on my test and programming and explaining my hearing issues and would recommend her to anyone.
