When I first started coming here, it had growing pains, particularly with staff recruitment and attitude. The place is now superb. Amazing variety of items, superb quality of cheeses and meats, both foreign and domestic. Their new checkout systems are time saving and then there is always an attendant nearby. Staff is friendly and always busy doing something. At the cheese department, they were absolutely knowledgeable about the types, origins, and their recommendations were spot on. Good training of the staff... obviously. My only recommendation is on the hot food bar. After 1:30, it tends to get picked over and a refreshment of the items is in order. Market Basket is one of those stores. Neverrrr even knew this place existed. New Hampshire is such an amazing state. This was my first time there as well (and I grew in upstate NY. So weird I had never been before) NH feels like one of Americas best kept secrets. Anyway, this store is massive! It's also massively busy. Couldn't believe how crowded it was. You think...."I'm in New Hampshire, there are like 5 people who live here" You legit never hear of anyone who is from here lol. Even growing up in NY, I can't remember ever meeting anyone from NH, lol. But yeah, plenty obviously live there and yeah kinda weird right to base that off of one visit to a grocery store? Haha. Anyway, store is massive. They have everything (except for Simply Apple Juice lol). Prices are great. NH is not nearly as expensive as most states in the northeast. AND the stores still use plastic bags! Which I love bc it's so ridiculous to get rid of them...especially when like 80% of what we buy all comes in plastic! And plastic bags! What's even weirder...in NY and other stores where those plastic bags are banned...grocery stores SELL. BUNDLES. OF. PLASTIC. GROCERY. BAGS!!! WITH....their store logos on it!!! And they sell the bundles for like $8-10 lol. So ridiculous! Just bring back the bags ffs lol So yeah, that made me happy to see here...even tho my weird love for visiting random grocery stores in random states...I always buy one of their reusable bags. The steak and cheese is only $5.99 and it's really quite good. I also like their Italian. I would really just avoid lunch time though. I've seen the line pile up at noon and then suddenly two of the employees go on lunch break. I question that sort of planning, I mean they have to know when the busy time is, leaving their remaining 1-2 colleagues to deal with the angry mob.

Example: San Pelegrino water at Market Basket $1.89 San Pelegrino at Hannaford ( same product ) $2.49! Price gouging at it's best. Cheerful young lady at the entrance was greeting people and providing quarters for those needing one to get a buggy. This store is like all the others, same layout and products (the German Christmas goodies are now in stock), though it is a bigger floor plan. They just spaced the aisles a little further apart so more room to maneuver buggies. All was going nicely until we started to check out. The cashier was flinging our products into the buggy! I thought two glass bottles were going to crack, not to mention biscuits and crackers turning to dust in their bags. I told her I was not happy with her method and she said they do it that way all the time, everything would be fine. Her supervisor was doing the same thing at the adjacent register. They might do that in the Derry store, but never have we experienced such callous disregard for a customer's purchases in the Plaistow store. They seem to forget where their wages are coming from. We were told if anything was damaged, we could bring it back, no problem. So we should open every bag that didn't have clear packaging to see what might be broken? We checked things as best we could as we loaded them into the car (didn't bag in store, just left). Chocolate marzipan bars at least did have clear wrap and one was broken in half. My husband took it to the greeter as he couldn't be bothered going back through the maze, explained the situation to her and said gift it to the manager as an example of how nothing gets damaged. He intends to contact head office. This appears to be a customer service and training issue. Won't be going back to this location.
