Atkin has done it again. I showed him some pictures and told him what I wanted. Of course it turned out great. I went to someone else while he was on vacation and it was a big mistake because the lady gave me yellow highlights and cut my hair uneven so I went back to Atkin and he fixed my hair all back up. I seriously will never go to any one else as long as he's around. He's never been rude to me so I don't know what other people are talking about. He is very passionate about his work and always styles my hair before I leave. His prices are very reasonable and I never had used the groupon. He's the best no doubt. read more

I went to get my phone repaired in Chinatown and while they were fixing my phone, I decided to explore the nearby shops. I have really long hair and wanted to get a trim since a long time but it just never happened. So while I was peeking at the shops around, I saw this salon and just went inside to check it out. I saw the rates and I found the place really reasonable (read, cheap) i.e. $22 for a trim! I have always loved the hair of Asian people and because the hair dresser was also an Asian (his name is Atin), I felt like giving it a try. I am Indian with naturally straight hair and felt comfortable with him cutting my hair because Asians understand straight hair like no one else! I must say I was pretty impressed with what he had done to my hair. It was more than just a trim, he gave me such pretty layers and he din't even wet my hair before cutting it. Sometimes when they wet your hair before cutting it, you tend to overestimate your hair length (especially when it comes to the length of your bangs!!!) but it was pretty clear to me how short he was cutting my hair. I came here on a extremely hot day, looking forward to some mommy time , with a haircut and highlights. The man had been unpleasant on the phone , but I chalked it up to catching him during a busy time. When I arrived it was empty, never a good sign. I came to check out this new to me salon with the Groupon coupon ; however the Salon unfortunately misrepresented it's policies, and so I was turned away due to it being a weekend, although that was not specified on the Groupon. The owner refused to provide me service , although the Salon was empty. I now see why there was no one there. Who wants to go somewhere with subpar service that must not do that great of a job since no one else is there. I had to walk home in the heat , with all my hair & no cute cut. I went to this shop for three years while living in Philadelphia. Yes, his English isn't the best, but frankly, I'm not there for his conversational skills, I'm there for a (men's) haircut. He has always done a good job. Sometimes I would show him pictures of how I wanted it styled and I have to say in three years I've never walked out of here disappointed. I'M NOT THE FIRST VICTIM! -Read Tammie C.'s Experience- I paid $55 for a full highlight Groupon. I was hopeful to find a hair stylist close to my house and affordable down the road. On their site Atin, (the owner and the only stylist there), states that he's been doing hair for over a decade and SPECIALIZES in blonde hair. The reviews were great I had no worries. I spoke plainly that I wanted bright blonde highlights for summer, cool (ash) tones and no orange or yellow! He handed me a color book like I was picking a nail polish color. My hair is dark blonde with grown out highlights. I've had highlights most my life so it's not a huge deal, it just needed to be freshened up, maybe just the roots. So, I thought we were on the same page even though his English wasn't fluent, but he seemed to understand. Atin applied only a few highlights then put dark brown on all the rest of my hair, which I thought would just be darker highlights. It turned out dark brown with a few orangeish stripes on top and one underneath - kind of like a Reese's Cup. He charged me for the brown an additional $30! I had the start of a migraine so I actually paid it and left. Two days later I called several times but Atin didn't seem to understand so then I went down and waited. It wasn't busy at all. I wanted to give him a chance to correct it. I even brought pictures. I asked for more actual blonde highlights and then an ash toner. He didn't know the word 'toner' at all !!! I would of been all thumbs trying to highlight my own hair and didn't have the $ to go elsewhere. I thought if he would just do the highlights correctly, I could get a toner myself. Before I sat down, I offered to show Atin the picture again and pointed to the orange streak in his black hair and said I did not want that at all. Atin then dumped ALL BLEACH on my head and RUBBED it in! I was alarmed. It was burning like fire and I asked what about the highlights we discussed! My (hair) spirit was broken at this point. He rinsed it out and my head was ALL ORANGE and it was coming out in little clumps. I still had that headache and broken spirit so I paid the additional $40 for corrections!!! He kept telling me I needed to pay for a deep conditioning treatment for an additional $30! I just wanted out! I was numb and didn't want to end up crying or freaking out. I DID NOT WANT HIM TO TOUCH MY HAIR EVER AGAIN. To wrap this up - I left a Facebook private message explaining I was unhappy. There was no reply and I left several messages with Atin. He told me the manager would call me by end of business of everyday that I called. No one did. After over I week of no calls or emails I called again and said I would wait while he got the manager from where ever she was. It ended up being his wife, Leesha. Leesha wouldn't let me get a word in edgewise and just kept repeating that they have all great reviews and that they had a successful happy business. (Kind of trying to say I was lying.) After awhile, I finally raised my voice and told her to just listen. She went on to say that the picture I showed Atin, which was a celebrity with highlights, wasn't realistic because of the paparazzi lighting and so on and so on. What? I said I wanted the additional money I had paid and would eat the $55 Groupon I paid for. Leesha said 'no' over and over and kept blaming me for poor communication with Atin. She said I needed to come back and let him fix it again. NO WAY. I emailed her some pictures of my orange head and then she agreed that she would refund $60 but that she was doing a HUGE favor for me to make me a happy customer. The refund took 2 weeks and several follow-ups by myself. After babying my hair and going through several weeks and phases of correction my color is better now, but my hair is still on the mend. I'm not sure why this salon agreed to do a deal with Groupon, since it seems like all the bad reviews of horrible service are for people who purchase the Groupon. I purchased the Groupon deal for a haircut and deep conditioning service. I called the same day for an appointment. Over the phone, I made an appointment with the receptionist, and then mentioned my Groupon. She told me that they were actually busy and to try again later, and then hung up on me. I was around the corner and decided to go in. The salon was completely empty and the owner approached me right away. I asked if they were open and he replied that they were. As soon as I mentioned my Groupon he asked if I had an appointment. I replied that I had made one but the receptionist had hung up on me. He then spoke with her and seemed to tell her what to say to me. He told me they were very busy and to "come back later" although they clearly had nothing going on and had appointments available- I guess as long as you didn't have a Groupon. She repeated the same thing to me twice and kept telling me "later". After seeing the service that other Grouponers received, I'll be contacting Groupon for a refund since they refused me service instead of risking my hair at this place. Suggestion for the salon: don't sign up for deals that you don't plan on following through with for paying customers. read more

South Street is very lucky. Cutting hair at Attractive Beauty Salon is owner and head stylist, Tin. I have been going to Tin for over 4 years now and can confidently say that he is the best hair stylist I have ever had. I have literally never had a bad hair cut from him. He has worked at at least 3 previous Chinatown salons before now opening his own. The inside is newly remodeled from the previous tenants and much brighter than what you see from South Street. Tin emigrated from China, but don't let his roots fool you. He can cut hairstyles of all types, and many of my friends - of all races - have their hair cut by him and now are loyal customers. Tell him how you want your hair done, and he is a genius in not only understanding that, but applying it to YOUR hair and style. Too many barbers and stylists out there put too much of their own spin (or cut just one hairstyle), but Tin is not like them: Tin will carefully assess what you tell him, analyze your hair type (i.e. soft, hard, curly, straight, which direction it grows, and more), and make your hair look better than you had imagined. Some other perks are the nice shampoo before the haircut, and rinse afterwards. Do your hair a favor and head (no pun intended) over there! read more

I would give this place zero stars if I could. Made an appointment yesterday without any issues. Came in today and one person was working (the owner) and he was cutting someone's hair. Not a problem, I patiently waited. He finished cutting the women's hair and came to me and asked what I was having done. I told him a cut and color and he quoted me a price. I told him I had a Groupon and he immediately said he couldn't take me. Mind you no one else was in the salon (except the owner's 4 year old son). I apologized and told him I did not know or understand why he needed my groupon voucher number when I booked. I told him I had the voucher right here (showed him my phone) and asked why he couldn't take me. He repeatedly gave me ridiculous reasons and refused. I have used groupons in the past and this was never a rule. He then told me he would charge me the price I paid for the groupon for a cut and color. Excuse me, no, I already purchased one and I'm not giving you more money. I then told him I would be calling Groupon and receiving a refund (which I did). Be warned before using this place. Similar to Christine, I came in looking for a trim and some layers. It seems the folks who are unhappy came in for coloring and I can't speak to those services. First off, I love that you can schedule an appointment online using the site. This was hugely helpful, as I never remember to schedule haircuts, and end up going a loooong time between haircuts. Normally, I have a lot of hair cut off because of said habit of going too long between cuts, but with my wedding coming up in October, I know better than to make any dramatic changes. I also have thin, fine hair. Read: Gets very limp and flat in the summer. So the way that I mask this is by using volumizing shampoos (I'm low maintenance when it comes to grooming so I'm not good about using products or even blow-drying) and getting lots of layers cut into my hair. I told Atin this when I walked in, and I think it's my own fault for not bringing in a picture of previous haircuts or explaining more explicitly what kind of layers I needed. He himself washed my hair (gentle yet invigorating) and then set to work on my hair. At the end, I ended up with a lot of layers framing my face and was told that blow-drying, not layers, would give me volume. True, but I was hoping for a little boost from layers! He did show me some techniques, though, for how to use a blow-dryer to get said volume. That being said, even though I didn't get the haircut I wanted, I have a lot of cute layers framing my face all of which I can pull back, which is essential for work. As someone with curly hair, I take my haircuts and stylists very seriously. There are a lot of people that do not know how to cut curls, which can be disastrous. After getting some terrible haircuts in the past, I spent a lot of time trying to find a new stylist that could cut my hair well and was affordable on my college student budget. This haircut left me very pleased. Atin spent the time to study my hair before starting, asked what I wanted, and made sure what I wanted would work with my hair. As he was cutting, he paid a great deal of attention to each cut and made sure that it was all even. The shampoo and condition was also very relaxing and the attendant was kind and struck up a good conversation. The price is also extremely good, which is a huge plus. Overall, this is one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten, and I am picky about my hair. It dries well naturally, so I do not have to struggle with my curls every morning. I can tell that Atin knows what he is doing when it comes to cutting hair. I will definitely be returning here when I need a new haircut. read more

Uhhh I went in one time and there was like no one in there, I figured I'd go in and get a cheap haircut, the first thing the guy says is "we don't carry razors" so I took it as him being antiblack. So I come in yesterday thinking ok maybe you were over thinking and give it a try, i wanna save some $ since his cuts start at $15. so i said just use the clippers to do my shape up he says ok. so dude effed up my hair,one side was higher that the other, gave me no shape up, and rushed my cut. I've been going to Atin regularly for a few years now. You can't beat the price ($15) for a men's cut in the area. He doesn't seem to speak a ton of English, so there's not a lot of conversation while he cuts your hair, but he always does a good job. The only improvement I can think of would be to have more consistent hours--sometimes the place is just randomly closed despite their posted hours saying that it's open. read more

I was just walking by the street and saw this board outside saying haircut $22 and up...I was like seriously this cheap (specially when you are paying $70-$80 all the time). I wasnt too sure if this would be good place to get the cut done as its too much reasonable. I went inside and the place looked nice it is run by a couple. I thought to take a chance and I am glad I did. $25 for hair wash, hair cut and blow dry all inclusive..what more can I ask for. I got layers cut and it was very well done. I think I have got my place and at a very good price. Walkins are welcomed but since there was just 1 guy doing the haircut there was a wait of 30mins so prefer taking an appointment. Atin never really learned English formally so that's a big barrier. I called ahead and he told me to adjust my schedule to come in early to get my treatment and haircut, which I did only to wait 30 minutes- which he comped with a free blow dry ($15) and a cheaper hair curling ($5 instead of $15). He took his time but needless to say it was poor management and silence because of the language barrier, barely a good experience. BUT the product he used for the treatment was awesome and left my hair smooth, silky and shiny and he took his time cutting my hair even though he wasn't dressed very formally and I could see his underwear bunched up every time he lifted his arm- which was most of the time. I tried to show him pictures but he brushed me off and just went with his instinct of what "long layers" meant to him. I think it was a good cut, hard to say because my hair looks so healthy I can't tell if the split ends are gone and I didn't ask for much styling. Even with the curling he took his time. Although he charged for everything ($10 more for long hair, etc) I gave him a fairly good tip (40%) considering I was paying Groupon price and my hair did feel awesome despite the lackluster service and ambience. I wouldn't go back unless I really needed a treatment and I had a Groupon again (which doesn't include a blow dry just so you know, $15, or long hair $10). I've been trying to find a hair stylist for a couple years ever since I moved to Philadelphia- and I'd gotten hack jobs from other salons in my search. My hair is a complex monster of thickness, waves, and more thickness- not your regular white girl hair. I attempted to explain (because I always had to explain) and Atin actually understood my hair! I walked into Attractive Beauty Salon on a Monday evening with my friend who had an appointment, luckily for me they were able to fit me in (although I did have to wait about an hour). I was given a heavenly shampoo and wash by the women on staff, who gently suggested that I also get my eyebrows waxed, which I gladly complied with. After the painless eyebrow waxing, I sat down with Atin and showed him what I wanted with a picture of Ilana Glazer from Broad City with short hair. He asked me a few times if I was positively sure I wanted to cut so much hair off, which I appreciated. Needless to say Atin is definitely an expert and a perfectionist when it comes to hair. He did a great job and I am really happy with my new short hairdo. I paid $34 for eyebrow waxing and haircut before tip, quite the deal! It's also worth mentioning that I was a bit of an unorganized mess and showed up at the salon 10 minutes after I had left looking for my lost cellphone, which they were very nice about. What a horrible walk in experience!!!! I went to the website for Attractive Hair Salon and saw a few black women in the hair gallery so I assumed they were comfortable doing black hair. Well when I walked in with my daughter whose hair is very curly the stylist looked up and said No!!! And looked away and never bothered to look our way again or offer any explanation. At this point the receptionist came over and said "I'm sorry, her hair is too curly, maybe you can try the salon at 810 South" . I then said, ok fine, we walked one door away to 810 South St to find a vacant and abandoned space!! DO NOT PURCHASE A GROUPON FOR THIS PLACE!!!!! Horrible service and lack of attention to detail to clients and here's a few reasons why: -I made an appointment online via the website and had correspondence with I guess the owner of the place. When I showed up, the owner looked completely lost, like he didn't know he had an appointment when I came in. -It took over 30 minutes until I actually sat down in the chair to get started on my services (cut and single process) -Trying to talk to the guy about color was a f***ing nightmare. It felt more like going to the nail salon where they tell you to "pick color" and do a paint job. Hair is different. The owner had no clue and didn't even assess my own hair color before deciding on a color that turned out to be WAYYYYYYYYYYYY lighter than I had anticipated!!!! Even when I asked whether the color would compliment my skin tone or if it was too light. After he washed my hair, the color looked like a light orange/yellow color and I was completely upset!!!! So to remedy the situation, the owner whipped out this stupid book of hair colors asking me to "pick color" to change up the mishap of a color job he did. -He couldn't even clean up the messy hair job he did. I have a big ring of dark brown hair dye all over my hairline!!!! -The picture I showed him for my haircut had bangs and layers and I explained to him I liked the length of it and the layers (I would've had a considerable amount of hair cut off if he actually LISTENED to me). What he did was cut my hair straight across the bottom about 2 inches like a trim, gave me no bangs or layers, and then dried my hair straight and didn't even bother to style it. So thanks to this valuable lesson learned, I should've saved my money and gone to a REAL HAIR SALON that actually pays attention to their clients' needs and actually listens! Quit your day job, guy! Running a hair salon is more than "pick color" and then paint the client. You're better off running a nail salon if that's what you call service....... read more

I recently shaved off all of my hair and not surprisingly did a shite job. Was desperate to find someone to clean it up for me but didn't want to wait 2 hours or have to pay $40 for a fade. I live nearby and passed a million times so thought I'd give them a try. I walked in one Sunday and walked out 15 minutes later with a sweet do! My favorite part is it only cost $15!!! I've been going back ever since. I got a fade and he even put cut little parts in the back (I'm a 40yo professional) that I didn't feel self conscious about in my corporate job. I receive compliments all the time as he does a wonderful job and sometimes we mix it up. Atin is fun, friendly, talented and fast. He consults with clients and is very honest about what he can/can't do. He doesn't have extensive experience with black hair and rather than take a clients money he'll tell them. I could tell he was a little nervous about doing my hair but I assured him he couldn't possibly do any worse than what I'd done lol. Yes English is a 2nd language and if you're not comfortable with that I would suggest going somewhere else. I think that is also the reason a number of people have accused him of being rude, I've never witnessed him be anything but friendly and patient. Try stopping in when it's slow or no one is waiting and have a consult. He'll let you know what he's capable of and if it's going to be more time consuming than he has capacity for. read more

This place gives ok hair cuts. Very detailed work. Easy to get an appointment. I see people mention language barrier.. I didn't experience this. I told him what I wanted and he did it, no further explanation/translation needed. I think the mid star rating is really due to what appears to be a groupon issue. I arrived 5 minutes prior to my appointment. I was told that I did not have an appointment. I am not sure how that happens when a credit card was needed to secure the appointment. I was then chased out of the salon. He might give an amazing haircut, but I will not give any business who treats people like that my money. Turns out that I did not have an appointment because I received an e-mail from the salon an hour before my appointment cancelling it. Best Haircut EVER!!!! I discovered this salon right before leaving Philly for work on the West Coast. I am glad to be back. Atin is amazing.

I have gone to the owner previously and he was great! A friend recommended me and I really enjoyed the cut I got. He's super particular which is fantastic. So this time around I wanted to chop off all my hair and I thought he would be perfect for the task at hand! However, I was a walk-in and he gave me to some woman named Kim (who was a new hire). Thinking that he would hire someone along the same lines as his exacting practice, I decided to give her a shot. This was the worst decision ever. I wanted a slightly angled cut with the front longer than the back as is the current chic style. I gave her a picture and she did the front pretty well but then proceeded to chop 4 extra inches off the back! I'm now ashamed of my hair and can't do anything about it. To add insult to injury, the cut was choppy and not even. The partial highlight was 10 foils max (and that's after requesting more) and not done correctly at all. I'm not very picky but this woman seemed like some stranger off the street who thought she'd try cutting hair. I'm a dirty blonde and was surprised at how quickly bleach lightened my hair. Simple things you'd learn during beauty school seemed to be fascinating to her! Edit: Atin was gracious enough to offer complimentary fixing whenever I feel ready to come back in. The customer service there is great, and he's got a passion for his business. I hope my next experience will be as good as my previous one. read more
