We ordered a couple of sushi platters for dinner and it was absolutely delicious. The pieces were fresh and generous. There was also a nice variety of fish. To date, we ordered from them a couple of times already and it definitely will not be the last time. We like the convenience of being able to order online and it's always already packed and ready to go by the time we arrive at the scheduled time. Do note that you need to park along Mortimer and walk over the the restaurant as there's no parking directly outside and you don't want to street park outside as you will hold up traffic for those making a right turn at the lights.

Despite every table being full the two servers in our area made us feel like we were alone in the room. They kept the tea hot and Sake full. We had three Maki rolls, two from the daily specials. The lobster roll was excellent and the others very good. With Misu soup a salad and lots of sake dinner with tax and tip was less than $140 for 2. We left with a smile and a promise to return.

The black cod sushi ($10 for 2 pieces) is an interesting take on the fish, the nigiri torched…read moretableside so the fish's fat begins to melt forming slight layers in the cod. Being a denser fish, it does need a fair amount of flavour and while the sweet soy was a start, it needed something else for interest. After the experience, I'm still on the fence of whether a nigiri is the best use of this prized fish. My preference is still for the baked miso marinated black cod ($15) where the fish is hot and flaky and infused with a slightly sweet umami flavour. The palm-sized portion is just enough for sharing amongst two people. Sushi Bar's other a-la-carte nigiri is just as good with large pieces of barbeque eel on the unagi and a thick slice of ruby red tuna on the maguro (both $7 for 2 pieces). Displaying the lobster on top of the lobster roll ($18) was a great idea as it becomes the first thing you taste, and diners can see the full tail in its glory. However, it was already overcooked and blowtorching it at the table made it even more dry and chewy. Ideally, they should undercook it to begin, and the torching will help heat and finish off the doneness at the table. It's a dish with promise and the thin cucumber lantern a great idea for a beautiful garnish. Starting every meal is a bowl of rice crackers that arrives with drinks, a pre-pandemic tradition that I'm glad has been kept, providing something to snack on as we peruse the menu. A new addition is an amuse bouche of seafood, squid, and seaweed salads, enough for a bite each to enjoy while the rest of the meal arrives. As the temperature drops, the complimentary starter is sometimes a rich hot bowl of miso soup with cubes of tofu and seaweed flakes. A welcomed respite after a cool walk to the restaurant. With a variety of maki available, the black dragon ($17) was an interesting take on the fancier dynamite roll. In this case, sweet-glazed barbeque eel, tempura bits, fish roe, and green onion wrapped around the shrimp tempura. It's a colourful creation offering a variety of textures and flavours and it's ideal that the pieces aren't overly large so that they are enjoyed in one bite. The red dragon ($17) is just as good, substituting the barbeque eel for salmon instead. If you're in the mood for shrimp tempura ($8 for 3 pieces), I'd recommend having it in maki-form as the fried shrimp by itself is underwhelming, the batter too thick and the temperature tepid at best. Upsold to the tuna tartare roll ($10), we should have stuck with the tried-and-true spicy tuna ($8). In the tartare, the tuna too pulverized and the filling including dreaded tempura bits that causes the roll to become gummy. It also needs more heat to be considered spicy tuna. Despite their name, Sushi Bar also makes a variety of non-sushi dishes. You get a hefty portion of hamachi kama ($19) with the full portion, a meaty cut of the fish's jaw. A thicker cut, there were parts of the fish that could have been done a touch less but being a bone-in piece, it can be hard to gauge. Nevertheless, the skin was crispy and the fish hot and delicious. Served with a radish ponzu soy sauce, a bit more salt sprinkled onto the fish would help it pop.

Their menu had some Korean dishes too like Bulgogi and LA galbi. I came for dinner with some relatives. We ordered a small combination platter for 4 and separate soba combo with tempura and sashimi. Food items: edamame - standard frozen stuff heated up. Needed more salt. 3/5. miso soup - watery, nothing in it. no tofu chunks, no green onions, etc etc. 2/5. Sashimi: atlantic salmon - pretty standard. some very sloppy knife work though, with uneven pieces and random thin belly pieces Tuna - looked like maguro, ahi, albacore - tasteless sadly. It had the right colors but the texture was somewhat mushy and didnt taste like much. Some pieces were semi-frozen yellow-tail - again, semi-frozen and tasteless octopus - a bit tough, really thick cut, served very cold and a bit off-putting Escolar - the "white tuna" that isnt actually Tuna and really just cheap Escolar that is awful for you. This is my tell-tale sign of a really low quality sushi place. sashimi overall - 2/5. At least nothing had gone bad. nigiri: atlantic salmon, maguro, albacore, and a mystery seared one with white flesh - I suspect this is Escolar. None of the rice was seasoned, there was no wasabi in any of them. The fish slices were sloppy too. One piece of tuna nigiri had 2 strips of tuna on it instead of a properly cut and formed slice. nigiri overall 2/5. green dragon roll - tempura shrimp inside with lots of avocado - it tastes the way you think it would. Heavy on the tempura batter though which got soggy fast. very one-dimensional. All you taste is avocado and mayo. 2.5/5. salmon lover roll - this is a bigger roll with spicy salmon inside and on top. Heavy on the mayo, also one dimensional. 2.5/5. Crazy Crab roll - this is a roll with imitation crab+mayo inside, then with a mound of more imitation crab+mayo stacked on top of each roll slice. This was just gross. You might as well spoon a jar of mayo and eat some imitation crab sticks. 1/5. Not a single bit of real crab in this. there were 3 pcs of california roll (with a chunk of more imitation crab stick in it typical of Toronto rather than the mayo crab salad in other places) and 3 pcs of spicy tuna roll. Both average for this type of place, 2.5/5. Soba noodles - the noodles were the dry kind they cooked and to my surprise it was not overcooked - texture was pretty good as far as dry noodles go. The sauce was served in a bowl made of ice. A bit of green onion and wasabi on the side. The ice bowl was the worst part of this dish - it just melted really fast and diluted the sauce to taste like nothing. Didnt help that their serve was so slow and it kept on melting while we waited. Tempura - 2 shrimp, 1 broccoli, 1 yam, 1 squash, and another veg piece i forgot. Thick batter, but crispy. Sauce was average. 3/5. free dessert of sliced (sour) oranges. Service: this was a huge problem. VERY slow. Each table has a call button but it was useless. Nobody ever came when we rang the bell (and yes it does work; we can hear the bell). We still had to flag them down. Even then half the time they forgot what we asked for. And we arent even being demanding. They completely forgot to give us utensils and dishes but brought the food out so we just sat there watching the ice melt into our soba sauce until they came after the 3rd reminder. They seemed overwhelmed and understaffed. Plenty of free parking out front in the plaza. The restaurant itself is clean enough but their seating arrangement is odd. They have dividers making it look like booths but really they are just chairs around a table. A bit awkward to climb in and out but doable. They do offer really big portions of food and you wont leave hungry. Overall, the quality here is severely lacking if you want decent quality sushi. It isnt dangerous though - nothing was foul or rotten/gone bad. Nothing about the sushi here is remotely authentic. If youve had good authentic sushi from Japan or sushi mecca's like LA or Vancouver, you will be appalled at what they serve here. But if you want typical "westernized" sushi then this place is similar to a typical AYCE sushi joint, except its not AYCE. I cannot recommend this place. I can safely say I will never be back here again.

I've been wanting to go to Maru for the longest time ever since foodie friends on Instagram raved about this place. The place is located a few steps downstairs where there are 3-4 steps to navigate. They also have a patio as well but I'm not sure if it's being utilized. The restaurant is open primarily for dinner but they also do have lunch from Fri to Sun. I stopped by Maru on a Friday afternoon to grab lunch. I arrived before 12pm and the restaurant wasn't busy (only one other table inside). Staff greeted me as I entered the restaurant and she pointed out the lunch specials which were on a blackboard. She also gave me a lunch menu as I sat down, letting me choose any seat in the restaurant. I ordered the chirashi don (daily selected assorted sashimi, sushi rice, miso soup, and salad) - $38. The soup and salad came out at first. The chirashi don was a reasonable size and had a lot of great offerings. My chirashi included 5 pieces of toro, 2 pieces of salmon, a scallop, uni, and several other white fish (one was similar to hamachi...but the staff indicated that currently this is what was in season in Japan). The sashimi was absolutely delicious and fresh - melt in your mouth goodness. The rice was coated with some mild sauce and seasoning. The chirashi don was plated beautifully. As I got to my last bites of the chirashi don I didn't want the experience to end. Service wise, the staff were super friendly. They are Japanese and they do try to make sure you are served well. Lunch wasn't busy but it was the perfect place for a solo lunch out in Leslieville. Overall, delicious fresh food made with care. Wished I lived closer to Maru because I'll be thinking of that chirashi don until the next time I can have it again!
