It was evident from the minute she coordinated the interview with me, and during the actual interview itself, that she's been doing this for a long time, and I've never felt so at ease while applying for a job. While she was the epitome of professional, I really felt as if I was talking to an old friend that I haven't seen as a while and not someone who was reviewing my resume to see if I was a fit for their available positions. How to demagnetize myself from this futile staffing agency attraction? With only a mere five minutes each respectively to meet with three recruiters to complete registration paperwork of two forms of identification, and a two hour eternal ordeal to take a computerized skills exam powered by Prove It. It was a very impersonal interview meeting. I arrived at 11:30am and did not depart until 1pm because of this stupid long haul exam. The skills exam room of the computer work stations is a confined space with very minimal air circulation which restricts my best ability to rate well. Prove It skills test consist of MS Word 2007, Excel 2007 and typing. Note: Entrance is on 41st Street, despite of the address states 295 Madison Avenue and Park.

I ended up landing the job and am now making over twice as much as I used to at my old job. Another huge bonus is that now I have standard days and hours (M-F, 8:30-5:30). Vanguard was one of them. I don't know/or didn't know if this place was for people looking for full time and temp work or just temp work. I just got a nice call from a guy named Brian and came in the next day, filled out an application (although I was confused by that, since I wasn't applying for a job with Vanguard) and had a nice discussion with said Brian about what I was looking for. Fine so far. Then, he proceeded to present me with so much paperwork, I thought I was being arrested or signing up for sex reassignment surgery. I didn't actually think much of it but didn't have the time to sit there and go through it, as I had another appointment that I was already late for. When Brian was nice enough to e-mail me the stuff to fill out, I looked at it carefully. Why do they need to have my DIRECT DEPOSIT INFORMATION???? I want a FULL TIME job. I DO NOT WORK FOR VANGUARD. This is really ambiguous and a bit decieving. There is absolutely no reason why they should have any of that information unless you are tempting through them. Just a warning. Working with Advice Personnel and Brian S., specifically, has become one such case. I've dealt with several recruiters/headhunters over the past 6 months (I use the word "dealt" very intentionally) and none have come close to providing the level of support, initiative, warmth, and clarity that Brian S. brought to every interaction, no matter how small. Brian was incredibly professional throughout my hiring journey while also imbuing the process with a sense of profound investment on his part. I felt like he had my back at all times and, like any great tactician, was able to keep the complexities and logistical stresses of the process veiled so that I could focus on giving the best interviews possible. Because of this, I landed a great new job at an incredible company. It feels silly to write this about a recruiter but I'll sincerely miss our phone calls. Even when the subject matter might have been mildly stress-inducing (what job search doesn't have it's moments?) I always had a smile on my face by the end. Initially, at the onset of the conversation, I specifically asked to speak with Gerry Sheridan. She's the person who I saw on my LinkedIn feed yesterday and I had already taken the initiative to send her an introductory email last night. In hindsight, seeing the wonderful reviews about Gerry, I wish that I had spoken with her instead of the insolent woman-child who answered my call. I informed the person of my very unique situation being new to DC and she immediately began interrupting me in mid-sentence. I guess she assumed that what I had said was more than enough for her to hear. Eventually, when I was able to get a word in edgewise, I told her that the interruptions were a COMPLETE turnoff. I also informed her that 40 hours is actually considered the maximum amount of full-time hours and anything over that was considered overtime. I don't understand how this individual in employed with a staffing agency and doesn't understand that, under the Affordable Care Act, 32 hours per week is considered full-time. Of course, she wouldn't let me continue the sentence to explain that much to her. And what was her excuse? "Well, I have another call coming in 20 seconds so I was trying to rush this conversation along..." WHO SAYS THAT TO A PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEE?!?! If this is the first point of contact for anyone who calls your office, she is doing a major disservice to your company. I have NO intentions of calling back and I will definitely inform everyone that if they want to receive subpar customer service at the onset, call C-Suite Assistants. I'm beyond disgusted.
