This place is great. The Guatemalan food is authentic and top notch. The garnacha plate is amazing. Move over Lone Star Taco. This plate shows what real high quality ingredients can do for a taco. The pupusas are good too. Don't go in expecting Mexican food. Guatemala is a different country with it's own unique cuisine and this restaurant exemplifies it. Soooo good!!! Was craving empanadas and this had high reviews. Was pretty empty when I arrived but the guy who helped me was so patient as I asked questions and perused the menu. I had never tried Guatemalan food before so was unsure of what to order. The waiter suggested a few items and I went with the garnachas, pork abadabo, and empanadas and it was delicious and not pricey at all! I was appreciative of the time that was taken to assist me with choosing and all of the suggestions were good. So goo I'll be going back for dinner this evening. read more

This is a good find, though I opted not to inspect the TP. I've not had Guatemalan food before, so my wife and I were a little hesitant, only coming after reading reviews. The place is plain and in the back of an old shopping center. Someone else described it as a hole in the wall, but I found it quite large with about 25 tables. Don't come for the decor, but the food is excellent and very reasonably priced. The menu is a bit tough for a non Spanish reader to navigate, but the waiter was very helpful. I really don't know what I ordered... kind of a set of six mini tostadas... it was really good. The vege options are limited, and what my wife had... kind of like a pan cake made of the tamale dough was ok... not as good as mine. Next time she will try chicken. $15 with 20% tip. It's almost as much as my glass of wine at the Rice village place last week. read more

You ask for water, they bring bottled and charge you. We ordered the dish everyone was raving about, guanachas (sp), they were bland. The empanada was mealy, the soup of the day had a huge layer of oil on the top. On a positive note, their red salsa was nice. We will not return. read more

Had short ribs, hubby had chicken. Fresh made everything with mouth watering spices ! It's all in Spanish and VERY casual! GREAT FOOD

I arrived at 8pm on a Monday and restaurant was closed and kinda looked deserted. The parking lot was empty. Bummer! The Yelp page indicated they were open until 11pm. Don't judge a book by its cover. This is such a hole in the wall place, but the food was very, very tasty. The server was great and helped us interpret the menu. The portion sizes are fairly large as I had to take some home (which was fine with me!!). My advice is to try the tamale, this place is legit and I will be coming back very often! read more

The restaurant moved to 939 Nasa Parkway 77058. Just around the corner from where they were. The food is good. I had the carne asada. The potato salad side is killer. I gave it 2 stars because the price on the menu is not what they charge. The menu said that the carne aside was $7.99 but they charged us $8.23. When asked, the waitress said that the menu prices are not correct. What? It's just like being in Central America. ...Never know what to expect. read more

Authentic! Not dumbed down. The container of fresh seranos on the table was the first clue that this was a gem of a restaurant. Be patient as the wait staff is small. I had the pollo jocon. Excellent rice. Green sauce and very tender chicken. I didn't even know there was such a thing as tender chicken. Three thick, homeade tortillas. Filling, but not overly filling, just right. Recommend to anyone who wants to eat authentic food and does not mind speaking with a waiter whose first language is not english. read more

Atitlan was my choice of restaurant while we were visiting Houston, and I have to say I think everyone was glad I picked it. I wasn't totally familiar with Guatemalan food but based on the good reviews and some of the things on the menu I definitely wanted to give it a shot. The place looks small on the outside but is actually quite spacious on the inside with sparse but decent decor. It was fairly empty when we arrived so we were quickly seated and given menus. I tried one of the Guatemalan sodas for my drink and thought it was really good. Overall we wound up ordering the garnaches, a pupusa with chicken, a doblada with beef and the pollo encebollado. The garnaches were a hit, a little different from the type I'm used to but still absolutely delicious. I didn't try the pupusa but it looked really good, quite large and bulging with chicken and cheese. The doblada was very nicely presented and had a good flavor, though not my personal favorite. The pollo encebollado was different than I anticipated, but not bad. It was rather lacking in onions, but the chicken was tender and the gravy had a great flavor. The homemade tortillas with it were a bit heavy but great for soaking up the delicious gravy. The rice alongside it was also quite tasty. While we were eating the place filled up and it took us quite some time to get our check. The place definitely needed more staff for their lunch crowd and I wasn't a fan of the fact that it took us almost as long to get our check after eating as it took from being seated to the end of our meal. Were it not for this lack of service it would definitely be a 5 star experience. read more

Great little place! All of our food was amazing - granachos, chicken with chile pumpkin mole, pork something. And I absolutely loved their hot sauce. Warm but not blistering, outstanding flavor. Found them on yelp. Was a little wary when we pulled up - on a Saturday night at 6:30- because there was only one other group of people there. But decided to give them a try due to all the good yelp reviews - definitely the right choice. Amazing food, generous portions, good prices. No idea why they weren't packed! We were looking for a place to eat close by our hotel and saw this place. I've never had Guatemalan food before so we gave it a try. It was a great experience. We ordered an empanada, pork garnachas, carne asada and pork tamales with hibiscus and tamarind drinks. The empanada came out piping hot and really good so we were off to a good start. The tamales was to die for. It was so moist and flavorful that you could eat the masa by itself. The carne asada was tender and well marinated. It came with rice, green beans/potato salad and black beans. We had the pork garnachas last and it was still very crispy. We were not able to finish it all since it came with six small tortillas which they packed on with so much stuff. I had to box the leftover for later. The drinks were both quite sweet for me but they were both delicious and worth a try. The guy there was very helpful and accommodating as the other reviewer mentioned. Everything we ordered were his recommendations. I'm so glad we took his advise. This is a great find. read more

My mom, sister, and I found this place by surprise. We went in and were so happy to see that finally we could get some Guatemalan food. My mother is from Guatemala so we grew up eating this type of food. We ordered 4 different things on menu so we could sample and share. It was delicious!! The owner was friendly and helpful. We did not realize until after our meal that it was cash only at the time. The owner was so trusting and told us we could go get cash and come back. We ended up having the total between us all but came back to tip him. What an awesome person. We have come back several times since. Try the fried chicken!! read more

My wife and I went there today since they moved to their new location near the half-price book store. We normally don't get over to that area of town much, so it was only our second visit. The food is great and the fruit "shakes" as the owner calls them are fantastic. Service was and is a bit slow, but it appears that most everything is cooked to order with not a lot pre-prepared. Black Beans and rice are superb! The home-made tortillas are thicker than the Mexican type, but are hot and melt in your mouth. We are normally the only gringos in the place, but that has never been a problem nor have I ever felt unwelcome. I have been to Guatemala on several occasions and the food is very much like I had there. It is more South American style versus Mexican. read more
