"Chicago-based Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is the top-ranked rehabilitation hospital in the U.S.,…read moreaccording to U.S. News and World Report's 2025-2026 ranking, published July 29." I'm not sure what parameters U.S. News and World Report used to arrive at their ranking. My stay at Shirley Ryan was not what I expected. It was frequently unpleasant and very stressful. I knew that their physical therapy and occupational therapy staff were supposed to be top-notch, and they are. It's the support staff services (nurses, techs) that can be dramatically improved. I was at Shirley Ryan approximately 1 month after spending 3 months at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I frequently encountered rude and sometimes incompetent/untrained nurses and techs. I did not always get the same staff assigned, so I experienced several nurses and techs. Sadly, I rarely had staff assigned who did a great job and truly seemed to care about my recovery. The others appeared to see me as just a task they had to complete as part of their job, which they did not seem to like. My daily housekeeping staff was more pleasant than many of my nurse/tech caregivers. I'll refrain from naming those I consider the worst of the bunch. Just keep in mind that you'll likely encounter inconsistent and poor care from some of the Shirley Ryan nurses and techs. If so, don't hesitate to speak up to management (Charge Nurse, etc.) should you experience inadequate care.

Dr Hanauer and Ellen are the best. Dr Hanauer is world renown, and we are so blessed to have him…read moretreat my daughters Crohn's disease ! We travel to Chicago strictly for the care of Dr Hanauer because of the many GI specialist we have tried all across the country (and internationally), no other treatment plan works as well as that of Dr Hanauer. NM Hospital houses many super knowledgeable specialist, but anyone dependent on a service animal can tell you that many hospitals do nothing to help ease the complications and anxieties that come with being hospitalized with your service animal (the other Chicago hospital was unaware of ADA laws and refused to admit with the dog). For example, a Northwestern Patient Services Manager told me I would have to pay for this extremely high priced company to come walk the dog (her idea of support was to give me a paper with numbers of dog services - no help at all), but she never even mentioned the hospitals in-house dog walking volunteers!!! However, Ms LaKisha of Northwestern Memorial has alleviated this source of great fear and anxiety by volunteering to coordinate volunteer staff to come walk the dogs! Ms LaKisha of patient transportation is a legitimate ninja and master of transport services - including finding the time to genuinely care about patients AND service animals. If you have a service animal AND you require the best doctors in the country for ANY form of medical needs, this hospital is well worth the travel - just remember to directly call Patient Transport and ask for Ms LaKisha!!

Just want to start off saying I have loved Athletico and the service providers that I've had there…read morein the past (specifically on Devon Ave) and I do have experience with PT in general. The first day I show up a couple mins early and the front desk person was pretty straightforward and explained that there was a 15 min grace period before the appointment is cancelled as they do have a tight schedule which I signed and agreed to. For the entire hour I was there, everyone up front was laughing having a laid back time which was distracting but like fine I let it slide. The next day I show up 6 mins behind schedule (still within the time frame) and the provider's whole demeanor changed. She didn't acknowledge me/say hello, claimed they run a tight ship (the front desk worker situation definitely didn't reflect that), and basically lectured me about how I was taking away our time and other patient's time. I had only met this person the day before and she was extremely hostile to me. I said that I didn't appreciate being talked to that way (just to her) and I don't think this is the best fit. She then took it upon herself to say she's holding me accountable because I hadn't been before and also said "it's not like other fields where time doesn't matter as much"? Not sure what she was implying but a simple "Hey, I noticed you came in at 7:06, can you call the front if you're running late?" Would have sufficed. Not a full lecture so everyone else could hear. Definitely don't recommend this place if you are a minority because they will talk to you like you are a child. And when I called to cancel the rest of the appointments, I asked if they needed DOB or name and I was met with "we have caller id". Very dehumanizing experience for simply stating I didn't think it was a fit, sorry for not wanting care from someone who was clearly very hostile towards me.

If you want no progression, no plan, and no recovery, go here. You'll need to come prepared to…read moreremind your PT what you did the previous weeks and then get passed around to the assistants for the rest of the appointment. After seeing TaShea once a week for 3 months and making ZERO progress, I started going to Dynamic Physical Therapy in River North and saw progress within 2 weeks. The attention, knowledge and understanding I received at Dynamic were night and day difference to what I received at Athletico. DO NOT GO here unless you want to be pushed through the system with people who do not care about you or your recovery.

I really like the app Eric uses that I can practice the therapy exercises from home, on my smart devices. It is a great aide in helping me Use proper form. I highly recommend Eric Mills and Flow. The location is convenient right off from the Brown line. The area appears to have good parking. Everybody at this facilityis kind and welcoming. The facility is always clean and neat. I am so glad I made the switch from Athletico to Flow; I am ecstatically pleased with the therapy, the therapist, and service at Flow.
