I'm a pretty high-intensity athlete (competitive soccer, runner, Spartan race, etc.) and have had my run-ins with physical therapy. (Read: I'm experienced in visiting physical therapists, and know what I'm talking about.) In May 2017, I ruptured my ACL playing soccer (dirty slide tackle!) and began searching for a therapist for the requisite 6-month post-surgical rehab process. I knew I wanted something other than the ATI/Athletico one-size-fits-all formulaic approach. Not that there's anything wrong with them - I just didn't feel they were the right fit for me and my goals with this injury. I ultimately found Cori Mack, and Movement Physical Therapy. With all the therapists at Movement, you get way more 1-on-1 time than you get at the big names. You're also getting a therapist who stays current with the new developments in recovery science and someone who tailors the program to your goals. This is the thing that really sets them apart - every body is different in the way it recovers and the treatment needs to follow that. I got the sense every time I saw her that she had put in the time to lesson plan the treatment to the nuances of MY recovery. First of all let me say that Sam at Movement Physical Therapy has changed my life. In less than a month he helped put me back on track and I now feel 10 years younger. Thirty seven is the new twenty seven after my experience with Sam! Here is the back story: I hurt my knee playing basketball and got a referral for physical therapy from a Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) doctor. He recommended that I use one of their physical therapists and made a series of appointments for me on the spot. Thankfully I did not just take them for their word and decided to do some research of my own. I uncovered horror stories about RIC's poor treatment, cookie cutter PT approaches and nasty billing practices. I looked around on my own and called several different PT facilities. Sam at Movement was the only one that did not seem to mind all of the questions I had (and there were many!). He even got me all of his insurance billing codes so I could get estimates from my insurance carrier (I asked other facilities for this information and they acted like this information was top secret). Needless to say I made a consultation appointment with him. He took the time to talk to me about my knee problem and any other problems I was also experiencing. In addition to the knee injury I had been having IT band issues for the past couple of years. He gave me a series of tests and diagnosed where I had imbalances and talked to me about his plan for getting me better. After that I saw him twice a week and he checked on my progress, stretched me, activated my muscles, and showed me new exercises for strength and balance. He was also always available if I had any questions. His plan for me was geared towards functional training for the specific sports that I love (basketball, running, etc). He even talked me thru my old workouts and gave me advice for improvements moving forward. After doing everything that he asked of me I can say that I feel like a new man. I have a new outlook on how I will approach my training and am excited to say that I am no longer in pain. My knee feels solid and my IT band is nearly back to 100%. I can work out harder, feel my muscles activating and no longer have to spend time on the roller to work out knots. On my last session I took a stack of Sam's business cards to hand out. If anyone I know has any issues that require PT I will send them straight to Movement. read more

I went to see Sam because of a knee pain I had while training for a half ironman race. I knew Sam prior to the consultation but after the screening I realized how good he was in his field. I refer all my clients to him because he is simply the best and he is not the type to keep seeing you if you don't need him. He finds the problem & shows you how to deal with it. You are on your way... He does not hold anyone. I continue to do the movements & stretches he recommended, now 4 years later. There are many adjectives that describe Sam Shah at Movement Physical Therapy. He is professional, caring, attentive, focused, and observant. He also has the rare ability to troubleshoot multiple injuries simultaneously. Most importantly, Sam is a skillful listener and explains well. What makes Movement Physical Therapy unique? Well, they actually spend time with you--from the time you walk in the door--until you leave. What makes this Provider unique is that they have a five-step model which includes 1) Assessment from the previous visit; 2) Bodywork (hands-on); 3) Stretching; 4) Supervised exercises; and 5) As you progress, additional exercises are added only if you show the ability that you can do them. They don't just add exercises without confirmation that you can complete them successfully. At Movement Physical Therapy, they provide a quality work product and superior service! They are always accommodating if your schedule changes. Here is what they DON'T Do!!! They don't just give you a set of exercises when you walk in and let you perform them unsupervised (which often can result in additional injuries). They don't allow unskilled staff (clerks who work at the office) to work with patients--this scenario resulted in a new injury during my PT visit with a different Provider. They don't yell across the room. They don't eat food while they are working on you. They don't gossip (who wants to hear that when you don't feel well). If you are looking for a caring and skillful PT who uses intuitive processing, then you should contact Sam Shaw. He is one of the best Physical Therapists that I have ever experienced. I am so happy that I found him. Tomorrow I graduate from PT. I'm a little nervous, but he has given me the tools to manage my pain. I do my exercises twice a day, and I'm committed to healing. I am honestly very impressed by Movement physical therapy. If you need rehab for anything, you need to check this place out. I've so far experienced a very different and personalized approach to therapy. The therapist's provide hands-on mobilization and go through all of the strengthening portion of therapy with you. I recently completed therapy at Movement following a knee replacement and have only good things to say about it. My therapist, Lindsay, was the right combination of caregiver and drill sergeant. I accomplished a lot much sooner than I thought I would and felt good doing it. The space is not glamorous but has all the right equipment and is clean and organized. I first met Sam by walking into his clinic after seeing a sign in his window offering free initial consultations. His clinic is located upstairs in the River East Club where I work out and although it appeared to be very modern and clean, I never thought much of it. Physical therapy was completely new to me it wasn't until I had been dealing with a tight IT Band for awhile that I decided it wouldn't hurt (pun unintended) to go in. Sam worked with me on a couple stretches and never made it a point to try and rope me in for more sessions. A week or two later that IT Band issue had subsided (probably thanks to his stretches) and a more painful issue with my Anterior Tibialis had me in his clinic again. I was ramping up for the last few weeks of marathon training and my injury was debilitating enough for me to arrange for formal sessions. Sam made it super easy to get started as a new patient and even connected with me a physician that could provide a referral the same day. I saw Sam pretty regularly for four weeks and he was always flexible with setting up appointments last minute via email. As he lives in the neighborhood there were multiple occasions where he was willing to meet with me at times outside his normal office hours. More importantly, Sam single-handedly got me through the marathon in the best shape I could've hoped for. Throughout the remainder of my training he literally spent hours working with me and he truly cared about seeing my health improve. If that weren't enough he's a legitimately cool dude, which is very important if you're killing tons of time while he works with you on muscle releases. I've tried bringing in coffee or buying the guy lunch as a thanks for all the work he's done but I don't feel like it's nearly enough payback. I'd definitely go out of my way to see Sam should I ever need physical therapy again. read more

I'm a PT student who has battled back and knee pain issues for 8 yrs, and Sam and Jeremy are some of the best PTs I have had as a patient (and there have been a lot!). In fact, I made a yelp account specifically so that I could give this review. I've been seeing Jeremy to help with my chronic pain issues. Jeremy went to PT school at Northwestern and it shows. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the body, movement issues, pain, and how to fix things. Jeremy is really supportive and very motivating which has helped my progress a lot. Most importantly, Jeremy spends a long time with patients and is 1-on-1 with us instead of juggling multiple patients at once (unlike PTs elsewhere as another reviewer mentioned). He is also very flexible about finding times that work for me. I'd give a very strong recommendation to absolutely anyone to go to Movement Physical Therapy, both as a current patient, and as a PT student. read more

This PT team is the best. I had major surgery--quite serious--and have worked with Jeremy for several months. He is excellent. I was nervous beforehand because my mobility could have been seriously impacted if the PT had not been done correctly. Jeremy is very well-trained. I am doing really well and have made a full recovery. The therapists work one-on-one with you, which is important especially if you are paying for it yourself. Cori Mack is one of the BEST physical therapists I have ever met! She provides one on one care for entire session, which includes manual physical therapy.
