"Chicago-based Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is the top-ranked rehabilitation hospital in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report's 2025-2026 ranking, published July 29." I'm not sure what parameters U.S. News and World Report used to arrive at their ranking. My stay at Shirley Ryan was not what I expected. It was frequently unpleasant and very stressful. I knew that their physical therapy and occupational therapy staff were supposed to be top-notch, and they are. It's the support staff services (nurses, techs) that can be dramatically improved. I was at Shirley Ryan approximately 1 month after spending 3 months at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I frequently encountered rude and sometimes incompetent/untrained nurses and techs. I did not always get the same staff assigned, so I experienced several nurses and techs. Sadly, I rarely had staff assigned who did a great job and truly seemed to care about my recovery. The others appeared to see me as just a task they had to complete as part of their job, which they did not seem to like. My daily housekeeping staff was more pleasant than many of my nurse/tech caregivers. I'll refrain from naming those I consider the worst of the bunch. Just keep in mind that you'll likely encounter inconsistent and poor care from some of the Shirley Ryan nurses and techs. If so, don't hesitate to speak up to management (Charge Nurse, etc.) should you experience inadequate care.

Back to the same facility 6 months later as an outpatient being evaluated for my cognitive skills. The receptionist was nice enough to allow me to check in without my driver's license since the state revoked it during my visit to the DMV due to my health episode. The day started with a brief interview with a psychologist. Then, I met another psychologist for a variety of tests and evaluations. I realized I don't use my brain to its fullest capacity and potential due to performing the same tasks for many years post college. He then recommended some books and exercises I can do. Both were professional and cordial. I look forward to a comprehensive discussion of the evaluation to further my recovery process in a couple of weeks.

Horrible!!! STAY AWAY. Dr Bell will exclude immediate family from treatment. Therapy is a joke, they do not do what they recommend.

My out of pocket max for my insurance is 3k, and im sitting on close to 5k of debt now waiting on this reimbursement. This is absolutely unacceptable. This multimillion dollar company has been collecting interest on my money for 5 months while my credit is getting trashed. I have no idea how this place doesn't have lawsuits. They make you pay a hefty fee upfront, then when the insurance explanation of benefits shows you overpaid, it takes forever to get your money back. In my case, they screwed up the claim and kept sending me bills for $7500 with no itemization, no reflection of what I'd already paid, and nothing about why the fee was so high (but of course threatening to send to collection). It took hours of calls to get them to send a proper claim to the insurance company, and then, after my insurance company processed the claim, showing I'd overpaid by $900, it took many more months and phone calls to get them to refund that. If I hadn't been persistent and threatened to report them to the Attorney General, I don't think I would have ever gotten my money back. If you can go somewhere else for your surgery, I'd recommend that.

They made a stressful situation much easier and we truly appreciated their kindness and professionalism. However, we are very upset about our experience with one doctor in particular. We felt extremely dismissed, and it seemed like our concerns were being ignored. The doctor left the room not only with an attitude, but also without fully answering our questions or addressing our concerns, simply stating that they had other patients to see. While we understand that doctors are busy and have many patients to care for, the interaction still felt very dismissive. Later, when I went to the nurses' station to ask about setting up the next appointment for the referral they were giving us, the doctor was still there. When I tried to ask additional questions about my significant other's condition, the doctor again seemed dismissive and did not take the time to address the concerns I had. What was especially troubling was that this occurred in front of the doctor's students. In our opinion, this sets a poor example and teaches poor bedside manner.
