I've been transporting clients between Shirley Ryan and our community since 2021 and it used to be a good arrangement. I'd drop the clients off at the driveway on the east side of the building. They've changed the rules and only allow private cars to use that driveway. The staff directed me to some ambulance entrance and shipping dock off of Erie. I'm neither an ambulance nor a delivery truck; I drive frail senior citizens to their physical therapy appointments. This past month, I'm getting reprimanded for not following the rule of the day of where I can or cannot drop off my handicap passengers. I'd suggest using Northwestern's nearest drop-off spot one block west, but these physical therapy clients cannot reasonably do that commute. I'll be speaking with my team about this in hopes we can eliminate Shirley Ryan from our list of approved medical stops. Fortunately we have a smaller physical therapy company in house who we can refer these patients to. Seriously, Shirley Ryan? You hassle ADA equipped vehicles dropping off and picking up your patients in a dense part of the city? Maybe you'd be better off in a suburb where the parking is plentiful, because many of us advocate against single-occupancy vehicles here. read more

Like my dr. Facilities are clean. Easy to get in and get an MRI done. Always easy in and out. There are however incredibly rude people in the lobby who pick and choose who they let sit in the lobby. Attitudes and egos which sucks when you are not feeling great and are there to see a dr. Overall good place with a great doctor. read more

their solution to my severe pain was to "just ignore it" it's not possible for me to ignore this kind of pain.. Do they tell people to "just ignore" their cancer? does not live up to the hype. read more

I'm surprised I never wrote a review during my numerous lengthy stays, but I was going thru a lot. I had multiple surgeries due to cancer and I ended up losing my entire left leg/hip and I believe I was given incredible care each and every time. I was on two different floors and the staff was great(and some even remembered me)! I had one issue, due to a nurse wearing WAY too much cologne it made me ill and they switched out nurses. The cleaning staff was great and friendly as well. I hope to never have to go back but if I ever need care like that again, I wouldn't hesitate to go back (I have gone to an offsite/outpatient location in Northbrook and loved it) read more

If you are scheduled for an ultrasound - it will take at least six months to get an appointment. I see a physician at SR who also works at Northwestern Hospital. Since it would take so long to get an ultrasound I asked for a physical copy of the order for the ultrasound so I could go to a facility that can accommodate the patient (me) in a more reasonable time frame and the physician was not comfortable with that. I now am scheduled for rib surgery on the same day of my ultrasound, if I am to reschedule my ultrasound - the first available appointment is in August of 2022. I have been waiting for a diagnosis via ultrasound for six months. read more

So very disappointed with outpatient services. Dr Reese is a joke of a replacement for Dr Joe Ihm. Adios Shirley Ryan.

Had an issue my leg, at first it was good, but then a few weeks later having worse problem, trying to get response from ability lab took almost a week. I changed to Northshore where the doctor's nurse, if I have any questions, responds w/in 30 minutes!! I am done w/Ability Lab! read more

I went to SRA for an ankle sprain, which is modest treatment compared to the conditions they treat there, but I was reassured by my insurance company that it was normally affordable and by SRA that they see able patients for such treatments regularly. They are NOT affordable, and I should have been more skeptical. Because they are an outpatient hospital they double charge you - once for the doctors services (normal) and again simply to cover the cost of the office. This charge was explained to me as being for 'the doctors use of the office and the hospital'. All totaled, I spent over $500 for the doctor to tell me my ankle would heal normally. Do not go here for regular treatment! read more

This place is a complete and total nightmare. They are great at telling us how they are a top rated Hospital, but in my experience, that is anything but the case. I have too much to say, and it's impossible to review both my stays at the hospital as well as the center for bionic medicine so I think I will start with the later. They would have us believe their experts at building and repairing wheelchairs yet they have no idea how to do this. I worked my way up to a text relationship with the head of this department, Jack Avila, and he has done absolutely nothing to help me. I currently have a brand new $40,000 wheelchair which was purchased through them that is still incredibly painful to me. It was put together incorrectly by National Seating and Mobility. When I was an inpatient at Shirley Ryan, at the end of November, they attempted to fix it, using their other Wheelchair company, NuMotion. this was an epic failure and my chair is still not properly positioned. There is a tilt even though I requested no tilts. The base seat sits at about 100° angle instead of a 90° angle like a normal seat. It tilts forward and the Feet pedals drag on the floor as it's too low. This is crazy! This is a brand new chair and they totally ruined it and refused to fix it! I am told if I want it fixed I need to get another doctors approval to see them! why do I need a doctors approval Jack? It has nothing to do with fixing the wheelchair that you built! How many times does my doctor to refer me back to you until you can manage to get it right? Five? 10? 15 I am disabled and I live in a wheelchair and I can't run to Shirley Ryan weekly for you to try to figure out how to actually fix a wheelchair this is supposed to be your business and you're supposed to be the best! I don't know what to do at this point but I have contacted the attorney general because I'm fresh out of ideas. Maybe you should make me a new chair and start all over again? It's a sin what you do to disabled people, so please stop acting like you're holier than thou , because you have more horror stories to tell when you do success. read more

Do not accept any service or evaluation without understanding total costs (they will run up the amount to the insurance co just to hit your deductible and then tell you amount will go down soon - bills weren't received timely so I unfortunately found out costs after I'd already been to a number of sessions). Then you will also get a 2nd bill for a facilities charge. Care was not good enough to justify the over priced cost - go to a privately owned facility who only accepts cash payments and you will pay less and get better care. UPDATE - Shirley Ryan confirmed the above is correct! I can't express enough how excessively overpriced their services are - check out other places first and explicitly have them confirm all costs that you will be charged via insurance and out of pocket. If you don't understand insurance, have someone else outside of their organization explain the consequences and don't take "co-insurance will kick-in" as an acceptable excuse for their overpriced services. They will take full advantage of you and your insurance company. read more

Currently have been waiting on hold for 44 minutes to make an appointment. I a continually frustrated with the customer experience here. I have called the CEO Dr Joanne Smith in the past (312-238-0815) regarding the lack of focus on patients. Today will by my 2nd call. I don't see how they can consider themselves "a cutting edge research hospital where clinicians, scientists and innovators work together in the same space 24/7 surrounding patients to translate findings in real time leading to better, faster outcomes" when they don't even answer the phone. read more

They do wonderful work. That said, their customer service is non-existent. We have been with our 10 year old granddaughter for the last week and she tested positive yesterday. This review is not about the City location but rather about the facility that is located Elk Grove VIllage and attached to Alexian Brother's Hospital. I can not say enough about the Center and the people, all of whom were beyond excellent, whether they were Nurses, Patient Care Tech, Physical and Occupational Therapist or general staff. I came here based on the reputation of the Ryan Ability Lab and can say that they exceeded my expectations. Unlike where I came from which was another Amita branded facility, were the only compentent staff were about four or five nurses and the OT and PT staff. 3.5 Stars I have had both of my parents get therapy services at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. One parent had speech, occupational and physical therapy services while the other just had physical therapy here. Overall the main facility is very modern and up to date. They do have another building that they used for day therapy, a program that they offered that combined speech, physical and occupational therapy. The therapists and personnel are friendly. I do agree with some of the other reviewers that billing services are unnecessarily confusing and that there are probably better physical therapists with more experience at other places outside of Shirley Ryan. One parent was just told at the end to continue very basic excercises at home despite the fact that the condition is lifelong and debilitating. I think the potential is there they just need to invest more in caring for the patients in depth more and provide better long term support for patients. Also why can't they just combine with NWMH? It would make things so much easier for NWMH patients who are always recommended to go here anyways. read more

If you want great chronic pain treatment, read Permission to Move and contact Form Physiotherapy in Adelaide, Australia. They will see you over Zoom for about $100 a session; one PT there who knew exactly what he was doing with chronic pain recovery helped me more than the dozen or so HCPs, psychologists, PTs, and OTs I saw at Shirley Ryan. Also, I was asked to leave the program because I had intense anxiety; they said my anxiety made me a bad influence on the other people there. It was a poorly handled situation. So I was forced to leave, with my pain at its worst ever. Other places, like the spot I mentioned above, are doing more effective chronic pain treatment, and in a way that doesn't leave their patients in deep debt (I owed over $10,000 after insurance for 2 weeks of treatment; double what SRAB and insurance company told me, after several days of back and forth about codes and rates). I am close to recovered now, and it is despite SRAB. They don't understand chronic pain treatment as well as they could, and they are hamstringed by an outdated, hospital-care model of treatment, which results in outrageous costs ($700ish for one 45-minute session of PT or OT), patronizing doctors apt to see disagreement as noncompliance, and a system that is slow and often unwilling either to correct for past mistakes or to adopt new approaches in chronic pain treatment. I'd only try SRAB if your chronic pain is mild and if you have terrific healthcare coverage (like $0 OOP). And if it doesn't work for you, prepare to be blamed. They may not want feedback, and may not take responsibility for their mistakes. read more

In my opinion this place can be considered a scam.... My doctor referred me to them and it took at least six months to get an appointment. I went to my appointment and was taken to an exam room. Typical questions were asked from staff members. The doctor walks in and states "my staff is new, they are incompetent and they should never have booked this appointment. I do not take patients like you." That was it. I left. Should I be billed $550.00? Shouldn't everyone be very weary of a facility that operates this way. It is my opinion that this method of making money is very concerning, perhaps fraudulent. BE VERY AFRAID read more

My boyfriend was at Shirley Ryan two years ago after being in the hospital for two months and couldn't walk. They got him to the point of being able to walk 70 steps. Yep 70 steps, that's basically a trip to the bathroom, they set up outpatient therapy which we told them we didn't know how we could get him there. He couldn't drive, insurance wouldn't pay for transport, he couldn't afford to pay for it himself, his appts were for the middle of the day and I have to work so needless to say we didn't know how we could get him there. They didn't care, time to go home. Literally the day I brought him home he fell going from the car to the house, didn't even make it to the door. Fast forward 2 years and lots of health issues later he needs to go to rehab again and Shirley Ryan is only place that can handle his needs but they won't take him. They said they helped him before so therefore he should be good. Yep those 70 steps should have fixed everything. They don't care what transpired over the last two years, they don't care that no one else can help that they're really his only option, he doesn't fit their stats as a leading facility if he returns. A lot can happen to a person in two years and they won't even listen, they just say no. The nurses and therapists were helpful and caring but the admin is terrible, they don't really care about people, they aren't interested in helping, they say no knowing there is no one else and this person is in dire need of help, they don't care. read more

I went to Chicago IL Shirley Ryan Abilitylab and there were a few staff members that were great the Dr is a joke can't give any meds except sleeping drugs. So if you need anything for pain Or medical marijuana card just to try forget going here you would have to see your own Pcp. They have a relaxations drs that will ask you how you feel and if you don't answer the way he wants he keeps asking you until he just agree with him. There were many PT that seemed like they actually listened to you. There billing system SUCKS BIG TTIME! You get multiple bills for pt drs etc. your insurance pays then they want what you own to be paid in 4 months totally impossible when you are on disability! The payment would be over $500 and we have great insurance. Was told my first consult would cost me out of pocket $40 because deductible was met then received a bill for $379 which was one of many we paid $300 then $100 in one month and was told bills would be added and payment would apply to all they sent us to collections saying we didn't pay last years ! They don't want to work it out at all told us to ask for assistance we don't qualify for! So if you don't have $500 or more extra for billing go somewhere else who works with you! read more

I've been a patient at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab for outpatient PT for a number of years, and until now always had a great experience. In December, I started a course of PT with one of their newer therapists, Jesus Monserrat Dominguez. After just 3 visits, I had to cancel all my appointments with her because she was not only recommending some painful exercises, I discovered she was NOT following my doctor's PT orders. The orders clearly stated NO WEIGHT-BEARING, but all the exercises she had me doing were weight-bearing. She and I discussed this at my 3rd visit, and it became a heated discussion: she became angry and claimed I was "demeaning her professional advice". Huh? Her advice was to disregard my orthopaedic surgeon's orders? I relayed this info to Shirley Ryan management via written letter. Their response: Ms Dominguez' treatment plan was appropriate. To make matters worse, their invoices for PT services were 4 times higher than other PT centers. I won't be returning to Shirley Ryan for outpatient PT, I cannot recommend any facility that does not have proper systems and procedures to ensure their therapists are following your doctor's orders. read more

I have a compression fracture at L1/L2 and was referred to RIC now Ability Lab for treatment. After spending 4 hours in intake; which included an hour each with a psychiatrist, physician and intake, I was told I would "be a good candidate for their program." I then went to schedule physical therapy in their facility and after waiting an hour for the scheduler to come back from lunch, I was told they had no availability for 6 months. I left, disgusted, and booked PT at Athletico. Don't go here if u need help. They delay meetings with doctors and cancel appointments ironically they don't care about patients wellbeing.

My husband had out patient therapy in 2015 in Willowbrook IL. They were called Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. They said they ran into an issue with our insurance not paying for one of the speech therapies so they were going to stop doing that. Yet they continued to bill for that therapy from 6/22/15 - 8/14/15. We received two bills from them in Aug 2015 and paid those. Never heard another word from them. This April we receive two invoices totaling $2846.00 ! I can't match up what they are charging compared to what I see on the insurance claims from two years ago. From our insurance claims I see that we owe like $956.00 under our responsibility. We had no deductibles left. I called their billing department and was made to feel like a criminal trying to dodge payment. I was told that whatever the insurance didn't pay was our responsibility and I should take it up with them. My husband had two brain surgeries in the span of one week so there were lots of bills and issues to deal with. I should have been more diligent and called them to find out why they weren't billing. Our word against theirs. The staff was great but I would never use this facility again. Their billing practices leave a lot to be desired. This old dog is still learning new lessons. read more

Dr. Reese told me that I would have to come back, make an appointment! I told her that I have to drive for 3 hours each way to see doctors in Chicago.
