Six years after my first visit, Athletic's original taproom may be closed now but the company has grown at an exponential rate. For that, I must applaud them! For my 2025 New Year's resolution, I made a decision to start leading a healthier lifestyle. I made the decision to cut out a lot of carbs (especially refined white flour) and I'm eating foods that are high in protein and fiber, but low in fat and calories. These are also foods that make you feel fuller faster. I've also decided to significantly reduce alcohol intake. Craft beers tend to be very high in calories, and alcohol in general can have negative effects on your metabolism. A friend of mine recently decided to start exclusively drinking Athletic beers. Five months into it, he feels significantly healthier and may never drink real beer again. I decided to give the 'Athletic diet' a trial run. I signed up for a year membership and visited their Milford facility to grab a case of their beer. I'm optimistic that this new change will help me to lose inches off my waist (and save money too) without losing the great taste of craft beer. read more

I first discovered the beverage company around 2021 via a free sample program at Wildwood Beach Ultimate's annual July tournament and loved all the varieties at the time. Fast forward to January 2024 onward, this NA beer has hit the spot whether I'm watching hours of football, training for a race, or trying to get a good night's rest, but still crave a hoppy or malty beverage. Had to fly back east for something and, first place went to after got off the plane and into rental car was this tasting room. Well worth a trip. Had my first flight off beers, any beer. Tasting so much goodness in one sitting was almost overwhelming, but got through it. They have a large selection of flavors that can't get online, and some pilot or test runs. I love Athletic Brewing for several reasons, most of which are the amazing flavors of nonalcoholic beer they create that are only available at their tasting room. This is a review of the beer itself and the customer service as experienced via online transactions. Damn this is good beer! I am by no means a completely dry or sober person, but I do like to drink non-alcoholic beers to satisfy my craving at home, so I'm not ruining my athletic progress and also to cut back a few calories. Not all of their beers taste EXACTLY like alcoholic beers, but certainly come closer than other NA beers, and still with only 70 calories or so per can. But I am not sure I'd want them trying to be something they're not. They remain refreshing and don't weigh you down the way you feel after drinking a heavier beer, like a stout or IPA. The Run Wild IPA is my personal favorite "core offering", because I also prefer alcoholic IPAs at alcoholic breweries. It's crisp, piney, and refreshing. The other core offerings are great in their own genre of hops, but less my brand. The best beers are their rotating selections! I get emails notifying me when they have a new temporary beer, and I almost always order any ale, or lager. I recently ordered the Soul Sour, which is phenomenal and was happy that my purchase benefited Beer Kulture. I also purchased a pack of their hopped seltzers, and they are absolutely spectacular! Super fruity, but not sweet. And with the faint hip flavor of a beer, without the alcohol or calories. Highly recommend if you enjoy spiked seltzers for the flavor. My last favorite rotating beer is the AfterShift IPA, by far my favorite beer they have put out. If they could make it a core beer, I would be in heaven. Unfortunately I live in Seattle and have not been to the brewery itself, but I have dealt with their online customer service in asking when they would be getting back a certain rotator. They responded super quickly and though they say they weren't sure when it would be back, it was back within a month. I'd like to think they did that because of me. :) Additionally, all my orders have been shipped super quickly and gotten here earlier than expected. I really appreciate this place. Prior to discovering Athletic Brewing, it was difficult to socialize with friends while out at bars, at parties, etc. when I wasn't drinking for any particular reason (whether in the midst of training or simply just not wanting to), but now that an option that isn't just water or soda and an option that actually tastes great exists, it's been a much more comfortable experience. Athletic Brewing Company deserves a shout out on all platforms. They specialize in yummy nonalcoholic beer, which is perfect for me to drink when I don't want to get buzzed or want to pace myself. I was a part of a local event for charity, a bike ride for MS, a couple weeks back. The event itself was very fun and I used my Segway instead of a bike (bikes don't fit in my trunk!) and we went to multiple local beer spots at the beaches. Athletic Brewing Company helped sponsor the event and donated multiple baskets. I won a raffle with a headband, hat, brew, game, $100 GIFT CARD, and even a banana! I was able to use the gift card however I wanted on merchandise or brews or a mix. I picked out $120 of merch before tax including a Yeti coozie, Cotopaxi backpack and chalk/small Fanny pack style bag. I was fully ready to give my credit card for the difference, but the manager said absolutely not, and shipped it out. He said he was also including a variety pack of the brews for me to try out. I was thinking I might get a six pack. He sent me SIX 6-packs! I just can't get over how above and beyond this company went with their donation and how they made me a customer for life. The Athletic Brew Run Wild IPA is a fantastic beer that is delicious, and as refreshing if not even more refreshing than a traditional beer. Great for a post run, bike ride, or any athletic activity of choice. Or take it to the beach and crack it on a warm sunny day. TLDR: a finance bro gets healthy by leaving the industry, quits drinking and brews awesome non-alcoholic beer and takes his company public, inventing an awesome lifestyle brand in the process. Athletic Brewing is the premier brewer of nonacholic beer in the US. Full stop. When I found them a few years ago, AB was hidden in back warehouse in Stratford. They were operating on a hope and a prayer. I'm guessing they built out that first taproom themselves with a few trips to Home Depot. The beer was the star of the show, awesome but hard to get, the market not yet realizing this was a "Good Thing." I could go on and on about their standard fare which has expanded to Run Wild, Upside Dawn and Free Wave but the two things made them different, and special, to those who were in driving distance: the taproom and the limited run, special varieties available there. Taking the second point first, the head brewer must be a made genius and/or he decided to let taproom patrons be his guinea pigs for testing. (Bring back Single Hop Mosiac!@) For several years, especially before the main flavors weren't widely available, I'd stop at the taproom and pick up strange and unique hop blends and experimental formulations. Each was in a nondescript silver can. As time passed and the overall brand grew, some of those experiments have become seasonal or special flavors, graced with a distinctive can design - these include Downinder, All Out and others. The taproom was a special place. AB smartly staffed it with a personable and knowledgeable staff who excelled at both introducing NA beer to the uninitiated and expanding the palette of veterans to the growing rotation of flavors. Regrettably, since the closure of the Stratford location and move to the modern, larger Milford brewery, the taproom has been "paused." I can't see why they would delay reopening the taproom as the customer connection and experience there strongly differentiated AB from every other brewer NA or not in CT. Further, the Milford location has a boss patio with styling branded umbrellas that would be a perfect spot for a cold NA draft while picking up a selection to go. Hopefully, AB will be able to balance their meteoric rise to the nationally dominant NA brand with a local Milford taproom. For now, you get still get six packs to go, albeit warm, and no opportunity for tasting on site. The knowledgeable staff is still present to guide your beer selections. Final notes: Putting aside the flavor (which is great) most of these beers are less than 100 calories. Most are like 65 or 70 calories. The Downwinder Gose is the perfect summer thirst quencher. I could stick with the Run Wild IPA and the Hazy IPA and nothing else. The available one off limited run flavors take AB from good to excellent. They remain price competitive even after present widespread availability nationwide. IMHO no other NA beer comes close on flavor, and on the price/flavor combination, AB is the lead by a mile. It's a bit of a road trip from Hartford County but I've traveled further for a great cupcake so why wouldn't I make this trip for him? It's a little hard to find in the back of an industrial park but once inside it's clear we've arrived!! The bartender, Liana, was knowledgeable as well as extremely friendly; the atmosphere fun with adult sized table and lawn games; and super cool was the fact we could have brought our daughter and dog as they're full family friendly. No food on site but you can bring in your own food to enjoy with a tasty cold one. There are 4 non-alcoholic beers on tap daily and there's a decent selection of cans to go. So I won't bore anyone with the story of why I don't drink alcohol anymore. But I will say I ran and worked in restaurants that were very well known for craft beer. Needless to say, I have tasted a VERY large amount of rare a delicious beers from all over the country. When I quit drinking my fear was being triggered in social situations. And I really miss good beer!! I read about athletic and was dying to try it. A couple of times a month I go to a friends studio to play music. There is always drinking involved. I bought some of the mainstream N/A beers and they kind of did the trick of having a beer in hand but they were always lacking. Just beer flavored beverages. Not worth the money. So recently I found a store that sells Athletic!! I will admit I was skeptical as one would expect. I grabbed the wild run ipa and the all out stout. Both are amazing! This tasted like actual beer! I gave one each to my beer savvy friends and both said the stout was better than the stouts they had tried the night before.( both rather popular local craft brews) The ipa was equally great!! So this review is really more of a Huge THANK YOU to athletic brewing for making a beer guy happy again. I wanted to take a moment and say thank you for creating a non-alcoholic beer that actually tastes like beer. At almost 50 years old; I have achieved many great successes in my life. However all that success has carried along with it a ball and chain. I've had a drinking problem since the age of twelve (12) years old. Throughout the last 37 years; I have tried numerous times to put down the drink, but to no avail. There are two things I love to do in the summer, drive my Shelby GT500 and drink beer. Unfortunately, those two things don't mix well. Yesterday, it was my pleasure to finally find a non-alcohol beer with delicious taste. Their Golden Ale has already won a silver medal competing against other craft beers with alcohol. Their IPA is very good as well. We were then offered a taste of their Stout I am not a fan of Stout beer, but this one was very tasty with no after bite. If I were at a friend's home and served any of these beers I would never guess they were non- alcohol nor low calorie. If you want to be 100% focused on your driving (as we all should) or if you want a lower calorie alternative (50 calories for the Ale) or maybe you have to avoid alcohol, this is your beer. read more
