I was here a while ago, and was kinda in a bad place personally so didn't get as much out of the visit as I did on this recent visit. Wow. We wandered in, having decided that cooking wasn't in our plan. And it was soooo good. I had a cosmo, Wayne had a margarita (as he says, what else do you drink at an authentic Mexican restaurant). We went for the burrito - which was one of the best I've had. Not too heavy, meat was perfect, and, best thing? It was a two-meal burrito! Heated up amazingly the next day. I was too busy having fun that I didn't take any other pictures!! I discovered Athena's Cantina through our Yelp CM and this past week my SO surprised me with a special birthday dinner here. I love Tais and I love her tacos so I was over the moon and so surprised they would do this for our group. Athena's serves traditional tacos with a fusion twist--here are a few adjectives: 1. Their tacos are GIANT -- in that they have 2x the filling you would normally expect 2. Their tacos are JUICY -- they still do the meat like you want 3. Their tacos come with TWO tortillas like they should 4. Their tacos are FUN with their house-made avocado sauce that's not overpowering I would try other things but why do that when you can have their tacos? Athena's also has some banging drinks -- they don't skimp on the alcohol so if you're like me you need to wait to have some food in your tummy otherwise you'll be wondering how you got to where you were. The restaurant is easy to find and the interior is fun and casual. We had a good time reading through her messages in bottles that were written by local students. Where I come from it's not the culinary hum drum, in point of fact, it's quite the opposite. All ethnicities are represented by their foods, the foods their grandma made and the benefit of having a readily available abundance -- I suppose I took for granted. I'm gonna eat everything in sight that's not nailed to the floor upon my returns hence forth. Outside of the bigger cities the food scene is a bit short of abundant, and I understand this, it's not a slight to anyone or anywhere - I don't create the food news, I just report my experience on it. Perhaps there is a misnomer of ethnic foods - a vision born out of a book or a movie - or perhaps neither of the above. What I'm getting at is this, when I think of Spanish food I don't think about what I can buy at a bullfight or what the flamenco club is serving next door all meals served with refried beans and hot sauce, perhaps others might. I ordered the little meats AKA: Carnitas Taco from Athena herself I believe, she had that beautiful Spanish positive energy flowing as we chatted lightly. Her description and the lightly almost melting pork with it's crispy edges had me hypnotized. It was juicy and balanced in layers tucked together with a tortilla blanket, tipped with freshly dices cilantro and yellow onion. Your not going to get this experience at home without hours of practice, if at all and the restaurant just up the road that shall remain nameless can't pull this meal off the way Athena did - the nine bucks seemed a tad steep, not that I'd not return because of it, but I wanted two, maybe three. Wow... swung into this place conveniently located just down Rte 1 from the Freeport exit off 295. I tried the carne Asada burrito which was phenomenal! Now, I am not usually one to choose burritos, but tried it on the recommendation of the owner. She knew of what she spoke. This burrito was hefty, chock full of perfectly seasoned bite sized flank steak, rice, black beans, and cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla. It could have (and did!) feed 2. It came with a side of cilantro sauce which was very flavorful. I hate greasy burritos, and this one was not at all. I didn't, but should have tried one of the yummy looking margaritas coming out while I waited. Don't expect fast food - everything looks to be made to order, and well worth that wait! The owner was at the register and is very friendly with the customers, while her husband is making the food. Who doesn't love a good, local family run business? Prices are very reasonable for the size of this burrito - $14. read more

The food is Hearty and good, the drinks are fun and explorative and the desserts are so yummy! Had myself a Chocolate Martini myself, I'm a sweets and spicy girl for sure and this scratched that itch for me on more than one occasion. I moved to Freeport a couple years ago and have been trying to find local spots to go. I came here with my boyfriend and absolutely loved it. The owner welcomed every guest like they were family. She even remembered my sister who visited months ago! Ordered the Athena's burrito with brisket--which was recommend by the owner. Meat and rice were phenomenal! The burrito was so big I couldn't finish it or order desert! We decided based on reviews to give this restaurant a chance. Another bigger group (6 people)came into the restaurant at the same time as us and it took them a little while to give us menus and take our drink orders. It took over an hour for our food to come out and during that time no one came to see if we wanted drink refills and no water was refilled at the side table where the silverware was kept, so it was a long wait. The burrito bowls were great (except the tin foil plastic baskets). Pieces of tin foil kept coming up and joining into the rice and other parts of our food,not tasty and not any fun to pick out. The worst food was the overstuffed cheese quesadilla someone in our party ordered. It had a full bag of cheese on it and then some more, no guacamole with it just salsa which is good but didn't help take away from the fully loaded cheese, that couldn't even be folded. The last part to this was no one checked in about our food at the end of our meal or even during it. We wouldn't mind but one of the owners did do this for the people at the bar and the bigger table and it was not extended to our table. The best part of this experience was watching the owner's children come running out of a side room while waiting for our food and this happened several times. We will not be coming back again which is sad we love supporting small businesses but this one left a bad taste with us. read more

Went back to Athena's on a stormy evening. It was our second visit. The first was a Yelp event. The second visit was just as good as the first, we had butternut squash burritos and Caipirinhas. This is not a restaurant to go for a quick meal, it is a meal that you go to have as if you are one of the family in someone's home. If you're visiting Freeport and looking for a great place to eat, you need to stop here! They're new and their food is made fresh, so no rushing here. Sit back, enjoy one of their drinks from the sangria bar and you won't be disappointed. We have been wanting to stop by, ever since we noticed they were opened and we finally got the chance. The restaurant is family owned and they were a great couple to chat with! They made us forget we were at a restaurant, but more like you were a guest in their home - now that's what I call excellence!! Where to begin...we tried their Crazy Loco Nachos with pork and it was amazing!! My husband had Athena's Burrito, chimichanga style with chicken. He said it was perfect. I tried the Burrito Bowl, very, very filling and mine had the steak in it!! The atmosphere is very pleasant and again homey feeling.
