I have been a long time customer of Athena for their massage services. While I like the service provided, they ar ever strict with their re-scheduling policy. Even in the event of an emergency. I had to pay $150 for a massage I didn't get and due to an unforeseen circumstance. I will never go back. They would rather collect $150 now and never see a regular client again. read more

Have been coming here for 4 years, usually for facials. Staff are very good at targeting requested problem areas for good results. Located in an office building on a busy street, it is an OASIS. What started out as a relaxing spa experience, ended with me feeling embarrassed, rushed, disappointed, and angry. My manicure/pedicure was great and the tech was lovely, taking special care when I pointed out an injury, (though she did cut my big toe), but it was all downhill from there. I was scheduled for a full body exfoliation after and while the therapist was pleasant, the experience was most certainly not. First of all, I can't possibly be the only plus size client you have, yet you only had size large robes. I told the therapist that there was no way that would fit me and she shrugged her shoulders and said there was nothing else available. I had to put one robe on my back and a second robe over the front of me. It was uncomfortable and embarrassing. Other accommodations should be available... or at the very least, warn people so they can bring their own robes. I would have been happy offered a sheet if nothing else. I have had at least a dozen exfoliations at various spas and this was by far the worst. It was short and incomplete. She didn't do my upper legs, lower back, chest, or bottom, which I have had done at every other spa. Furthermore, she couldn't do my hands or feet because they had just been painted, which is something that the schedulers should have realized! Afterwards, I had to put two bathrobes on again, walk down the hallway, and take a shower in a dingy-looking shower that had disgusting, separated soap in it. I asked for lotion to put on afterwards since all my skin had just been rubbed off and was told there was none available... in a spa... no lotion anywhere! I have never had a similar treatment without getting a lotion or oil massage afterwards! Most places have a shower room attached to the treatment room, or they wash you off, then massage lotion or oil in, and leave you wrapped in warm towels for a few minutes. Not to mention that your shower room is in the locker room and the only bathroom. I was in the there for six or seven minutes and felt rushed the whole time because two people were waiting to get in and knocked on the door. It was the most unrelaxing, disappointing spa experience I have ever had. When I left, I was so embarrassed and angry, that I didn't even notice that both my manicure and pedicure were ruined! I had to stop on the way home to buy nail polish remover and take off all the fresh polish. I tried to reach a manager via phone and email and never got a response from anyone to hear my complaints or get a refund. This was a terrible experience and I can't believe how poorly this spa is managed. read more

Rather disappointed with the experience here. I booked almost 2 months in advance to have a spa day with my mom for mother's day. I was told if we wanted to be together it would take 6 weeks. I was fine with that and booked it. They immediately separated us and we did not see eachother the whole day. I did end up booked with another lady with the same package. We did nails, message, and waiting room together. This was the time I booked to spend with my mom. I was also forced to do nails 1st, then rushed into a message, and my toe nails got trashed immediately. Kinda sad for almost $700 spent. After receiving a gift certificate from a friend for Christmas, I decided to try this spa for a summer pedicure. I visited their website and learned they are an 'appointment only' establishment, so I called them up and made an appointment. My appointment was for 9:30am, and I arrived at 9:25am. I was greeted immediately upon entering, and my nail technician (Monica) came to greet me soon after checking in. She took me back to the nail room, which was intimate in size...two manicure stations and two pedicure stations (side by side on leather recliner loveseat). It was small, but comfortable and relaxing. She started filling my ceramic water basin, and left me to soak...for 20 minutes! I was a little put off as I've never soaked that long during any pedicure appointment I've experienced. Also, this was my first time here, so I wasn't too impressed initially. Once Monica came back in, she totally made up for it with her bubbly personality and friendly conversation. I asked for a French manicure and she did a wonderful job. The hot stone massage was very nice and relaxing as well. Overall I had a nice experience and would recommend them; however, I'm not sure I will be returning as pedicures are $20 more than I pay at my regular salon and I feel the outcome was very similar. read more

Be Careful getting Gift Certificates. Monica Closed shop in McKinney TX. after eviction for not paying the rent. But she also goes on Vacations that are pricey. We have several Hundred dollars on a gift certificate foe serviced that that can no longer be rendered. I have to wonder how much money was basically stolen. read more

I didn't want to write this and obviously I realize I have a choice but still something keeps gnawing at me ... so here goes. I've only ever used the massage services so I can't attest to the other many services they offer but this isn't about massage. I'd made an appointment, probably the 4-5th time returning after first receiving a Christmas gift certificate a while back. The massage was fine and the masseuse always pleasant ... again, this isn't about the service, rather customer service related. The appointment was for Sunday afternoon, December 22nd at 1:45 in the afternoon. I usually get there 10-15 minutes early to be changed and ready however this time the door was locked. Looking around I saw no sign posted, no hours posted and after knocking repeatedly there was no answer or response. Walking back to my car I called and was only able to connect with their voicemail, I also checked the website which in fact indicates they're closed on Sundays. Needless to say I wasn't happy having driven from Portland and wasted the day for what should have been an enjoyable pre-holiday hour. As I was heading back home a call came in from someone at Athena obviously having had listened to my less than happy voicemail message ... the woman apologized and said "they tell everyone with Sunday appointments just to wait and someone will come look for you in the lobby" ... unless they don't and they didn't. She stated emphatically that the owner would call me the next day, Monday 12/23 ... and guess what ... I'm still waiting for that call. The only other call I received, 5 minutes later, was from my scheduled masseuse stating she was sorry I didn't know about the Sunday hours "but everyone is told" ... again, unless they're not. She offered me $10 discount off my next massage ... that was even more insulting. So, I'm just saying, don't bother with Athena Day Spa ... any positive experience hardly negates how annoyed I am at their lack of follow through. Athena Day Spa, you're a disappointment! read more

I have been to this spa numerous times. I usually love the treatments that I receive. However, I've noticed high turnover of employees and it's been difficult to find massage therapists at this location that are good. And the quality of the therapists is not consistent, so if you find one you like, just book with them! I had a massage with Jane recently and it was the worst massage I've ever had (yes, for reference, I've had many massages for comparison). Her movements were brusque, abrupt and not relaxing. I would not recommend her. I just wish this spa had consistency among the masseuses, so that it could be easier to book appointments with any of them, without having to worry about what you might get. read more

I had my first microdermabrasion facial with Mandy. It was wonderful. I have never been to Athena before but it is easy to find. The lobby is small but no big deal. I used the rest room first, there are robes in the outer area. I don't know if people change into robes for some services and not others and that is why the outer door is locked. I found that confusing but no big deal. I told Mandy this was my first microdermabrasion facial. It was awesome. The spa is clean and I enjoyed the service and would come back. read more

So....I would love to know how "I just need a trim and I don't like my curls" turned into at least 4 inches cut off. I was very specific about the fact that I needed my hair to stay long (it was to the middle of my back) but I would like some "whispies" so when it's in a ponytail, there are some groups of hair coming down. I work...all of the time...and I have three little kids and I just wanted to feel good with a trim and a pampering session and now, I'm unable to do my hair without it looking like two completely separate layers of hair and I can barley get it into a ponytail without half of it falling out so it looks like a mullet. Please, listen to the people who's hair you are cutting. I know it's just an hour for you but I have a couple of months before I feel good about my hair again. read more

Paige is my go-to girl for balayage and cuts! She is so careful and thorough in making sure that everything blends perfectly for a natural and gorgeous look! I saw her this weekend for a much needed touch up on my balayage that had about 6 inches of brown grow out and was starting to get brassy at the ends. She brought the blonde all the way up to my roots and mixed a super pretty color to tone it. Honestly, I've never had anyone do my hair who was as good at mixing color as she is--she is part artist and part scientist. I am so happy with it and I feel like my blonde self again! I also had her do a nice maintenance trim and she cleaned up my ends and didn't pressure me to chop more off like most hairdressers in the past have done. She is a master of her craft and takes care to set expectations about what can realistically be done in one session, and will work with you to achieve your desired result. Her prices are really reasonable for color treatment and totally worth it! She is super genuine, kind, and works really hard to make her clients happy! Side note: the salon is pretty cute and they have tea and water, and little plates of snacks everywhere. Adorable. Definitely a great spot to treat yo self and relax, in whichever form you choose! read more

The staff is very personable and warm, they made me feel welcome and the payment process was very fast. I've tried to book here twice. They are clearly very disorganized and never seem to have the openings they say they do online. I'm a mom who runs my own business and it's important to be available when you say you are- most people can't just come in, in the middle of the day! I don't know if these people feel entitled to go home by 2pm every day or what but the receptionist was rude and said unless I took an earlier appointment they wouldn't be seeing me. Needless to say I won't be trying to get an appointment a third time. This place is a HUGE disappointment. read more

Sabrina overall did a decent job, she was very efficient. The only thing is the highlights aren't all over, the bottom most part of my hair is a different color, no highlights. I specifically chose Athena because of their community recognition and pedicure station practices (bowls). The following are the reasons why I will not be returning for services: Used pedicure tools were placed back into a general bowl (with disinfectant?) instead of using a fresh set (autoclave); No liners for the pedicure bowls; The prep work for both hands and feet were the most nominal I have ever experienced - almost no time spent on cuticle care and perhaps 30 seconds on each foot for filing; Gel polish product on the skin around the toes; Gel product on the skin and under the nails on the hand; Edges and details were not paid attention to at all, there were little to no time spent on tips or edges, some of which do not have polish at all; Reused files and tools on my hands, they were not sanitized, including the gel removal "caps" she put on my fingers; Brisk attitude and the service felt rushed. I was so appalled by the whole experience that I didn't want to stay longer to make any effort for changes, nor did I want to hold up the next client who was waiting for services. I knew right from the beginning that I would not be back. I would expect a higher level of service, cleanliness, and sanitary measures from a salon such Athena, especially considering that their prices are among the highest in town. I am sure Regina is a very nice person. Perhaps I even caught her on an 'off' day! But the lack of sanitation does not excuse any poor customer service behavior. Use an enclave!! read more

I recently purchased a Groupon for a Haircut, Style, Deep Condition, and Full Highlight or Ombre with Sabrina. I showed the stylist what I wanted with the full highlights, and we decided it could not be done in one session to ensure the integrity of my hair, but that we would be able to get close (I have dark brown hair, wanting to lighten). She asked me to cancel my Groupon because she was likely going to charge me more due to needing to use more product. At this time, I was already outside of the cancellation period, so I had to trade my money in for "Groupon Bucks," (unlikely to be used). So I had to pay again, this time to Sabrina directly. When I got my hair done, only about 1/3 at best was highlighted - definitely not a full highlight. Then I received a basic wash, a blow dry, and an uneven trim - no deep conditioning or style. Since she made me cancel my Groupon because I was going to have to pay more, I assumed more highlights would have been put in. I left feeling shocked, confused and uneasy about the experience, but was at a loss of words as to what I could say. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, I tried to see if it was just the way I was styling my hair, but there is nothing I can do to make it look better. Many friends agreed with the fact that it did not look like I had received full highlights. When I politely reached out about my concerns, she responded in a very unprofessional way. She got very defensive very fast, had a poor tone, and even tried using my own words against me - even though she did not do what I paid for. I did not get the services that I paid for. The things that she did do, were done very poorly. Now I need to walk around in public like this until I am able to afford to pay a competent stylist to fix Sabrina's poor work. She did not do even close to a satisfactory job, was completely unprofessional and lacked the courtesy I would have expected from another human being, let alone someone in the service industry. I certainly will not be going back to her, nor would I recommend anyone else do so either. read more

This review is for Sabrina. In an attempt to find a new hairdresser that would actually cut my hair the way I liked, I initially had bought a Groupon back in February 2018 & never looked back! Since moving to Portland, I was struggling to find a hairdresser that cut my hair the way I liked & was thrilled to have found Sabrina. She is reasonably priced, does exactly what I ask, & has always been accommodating. She even hooked me up with a really sweet deal yesterday when I desperately needed a haircut while my husband is laid off, which she absolutely was under no obligation to do. This was my first time at The Athena Day Spa. I went on Athena Day Spa's website and ordered a package that included a 50 minute massage, full highlights & a cut. I upgraded my massage to a deep tissue massage. I was excited to find a deal like this for $195. I went in for my massage with Melissa and it was amazing! One of the best massages I've ever had! I came back later for my hair appointment with Paige. When I showed up Paige was not excited to do my hair. She complained about how tired and hungry she was the entire appointment. She was upset that the receptionist scheduled my appointment in the evening and she wasn't sure if she would have enough product to do my hair. I showed Paige multiple pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like. My hair was really long (almost to my hips). Paige knew that I wanted a long/medium length bob with balayage. She started by chopping my hair off shorter than what I showed her in my pictures. Then she told me she was going to use foils in my hair for my balayage (instead of how she said she normally does it to save time). She started the foils on my left side and ended on the right. She started running out of product, white bleach flakes were all over the place, and she grabbed a squirt bottle and started spraying my hair while she added foils (she called it a wet balayage). When she ran out of product she used a higher volume on the other side of my hair. When she removed the foils, she started on the right. My hair on the right wasn't even finished processing and it was orange, while the left side was blonde. When I questioned the orange, she said that it would be fine because she was going to tone it and that I should buy a blue shampoo to help. When I asked her what color she was going to use for the toner (so I can remember it for the next time I need it done), she told me "a little bit of everything". After she rinsed the toner, she quickly tried to dry my hair, ran a straightener thru my damp hair, and she started cutting my hair. As she realized that my hair was thick, she tried to thin it, but she told me that her thinners that she were dull. All I remember is her chopping away at the back of my head trying to thin out the back. She started to become frustrated. She grabbed her shears and started to cut my hair from the root, downward, like she was cutting wrapping paper. She was hurting me and pulling my hair. It felt like her shears were dull too. The color was awful and the cut was a mess. At the end she wanted to take a picture for her portfolio and it took her awhile to place my hair and try to get a good angle on the cut. When I saw the picture, I realized she hid the entire bottom layer that looked disconnected. When I got home I saw all of the flaws and I became angry. The coloring did not look "painted". It was blunt straight chunky orange/bleached lines all throughout my hair. It looked hideous. I was so frustrated that I tried to put my hair up and I hated it even more. It looked like my hair had grown out for months and it looked trashy. The next morning I called Athena Day Spa to tell them that I wasn't happy and their response was that I needed to have Paige fix it. I told them that there was no way I would ever let her touch my hair again! They said, "well the stylists are contracted and they only rent spaces from us so she has to fix it. You paid her and other stylists aren't going to want to fix something they didn't do and not get paid for it." I told them I'll take my business back to Vata Salon. I had to pay more than what I paid for my original appointment to have another salon fix this mess and this is only the beginning! Every professional that's seen what she did to my hair says that it was the worst hair cut that they've ever seen and wanted to cry for me. They couldn't figure out what she was trying to do because there's no direction and the cut is so disconnected. Now my hair had to be cut even shorter (above my shoulders) to try to fix the awful cut. The color was just as bad. Half of my head was still orange/brass and I had to have a color correction, plus highlights to try to break up the blunt chunky highlights that were supposed to be balayage. In a couple more weeks I have to have more color work done to even things out more and do a reverse balayage. Worst experience of my life. I would NEVER recommend anyone going here to get their hair done. I have never written a terrible review for anyone, but I feel like other people should be warned so they don't end up spending $350+ to have their hair done and then have to have it fixed. read more

Amazing masseuses. I've had massages from numerous massage therapists there and have never been disappointed. Every masseuse is very professional, friendly, and welcoming. I do have to say that my absolute favorite is Mckinzee. I like deep tissue massages and she has the STRONGEST hands! She truly performs intense body work. I recently had a deep tissue massage where she incorporated cupping as she massaged and it was the best experience and best massage I have ever had. As soon as my massage was finished, I booked the same massage and cupping for my fiancé so he could experience the most amazing massage too!
