What I knew right off the bat was that I needed an expert to teach me the ropes. I visited a few other needlepoint shops in the Bay Area before finding City Needleworks and I can say that without a doubt -- Elena is the best! The first day I came in, she helped me pick my threads, offered decorative stitch advice, and got me all the supplies I needed to be ready for my first project. A solid 20 projects later, I am loving needlepoint as a hobby and frequent City Needleworks! I get my canvases finished here and find that the finished product turns out amazing and with a pretty fast turnaround time. The threads they sell from the shop are premium (no dmc) and they also host stitch nights, so it's nice to come in and just spend time with fellow needle pointers. I would recommend that if you are interested in needlepoint, a wide variety of cute canvases, and tasteful service, you should stop by City Needleworks!

I love crafting and needlepoint is at the top of my crafting list now. Had just done a drop off at…read moreSFO and wanted to checkout City Needlework to pickup fibers for some canvases I had and a gift for a friend. Soooo many unique canvases. The owner used to work for Needlepoint Inc and opened this store a few years ago. Many Asian designs. Tisha helped me and was so nice. I really didn't need anything but still picked up a few small canvases. Loved the help and selections. I'm not used to purchasing silks as my fibers so it did run up my bill but I'll enjoy the finished project. Located in Downtown Burlingame!

The woman rings me up and says "it'll be $26.50", I say "I thought it was $16?" She says "no..." then looks at the price and says "oh". Long story short she did nothing except tell me she couldn't charge $16 for the ring and asked if I still wanted it. I said no. I don't think she was the owner as she said "I'll have to talk to her about it" assuming she meant talk to the owner about displaying pricing as one thing and trying to charge customers more. To the owner, this is illegal in California. https://codes.findlaw.com/ca/business-and-professions-code/bpc-sect-12024-2/ California Code, Business and Professions Code - BPC § 12024.2 (a) It is unlawful for any person, at the time of sale of a commodity, to do any of the following: (1) Charge an amount greater than the price, or to compute an amount greater than a true extension of a price per unit, that is then advertised, posted, marked, displayed, or quoted for that commodity. (2) Charge an amount greater than the lowest price posted on the commodity itself or on a shelf tag that corresponds to the commodity, notwithstanding any limitation of the time period for which the posted price is in effect. I was really annoyed that she chose not to honor the price displayed and was surprised she didn't even attempt to rectify the situation in anyway other than "oh well, do you still want it?"

But his experience was fun. Mine wasn't. It was clear that I wasn't wanted in the class. The teacher asked me, "why are you here?" with a tone that sounded like he was accusing me of something. This was different from the way he seemed to greet others. I was late and thought that had something to do with it, but truthfully, I was waiting for a bus that didn't come. But, I shouldn't have been judged for that. Three people came after me and they received very warm welcomes. Then there was a meal where people were eating together and talking and I sat in a corner. This was many years ago, but all this time later, I still get sick to my stomach thinking of my treatment. Every time I hear about them or see their name, all I can think of was the horrible treatment. It's clear to me that they were set up for a particular demographic and I'm not a part of that group. I don't know what they have to offer and I'm not interested, first because of the location which is a world away from real public transportation (deliberate?) but also because they don't treat all people equally. Center for the book should extend its name to "Center for the book, only if you belong to this group, otherwise, get out and don't look back." That would at least have been honest.

I really loved the layout and it looks like they have tons of classes and in a very open, supporting environment.

I haven't knitted in years but was recently traveling in Copenhagen with a friend and she made a point to visit so many yarn stores, I think it rubbed off on me. Anyways, no one greeted us. There were a few customers in the store while some women were crocheting or knitting at a table in the back. We walked by them (I even scooted a chair in) to look at yarns and they didn't stand up or say anything. Finally, dad and his daughter walked over saying they wanted to buy something so I went over to get in line behind them with some yarns. Bad service, nice selection of yarn as well as books and patterns and accessories. Not cheap but organized nicely and easy-to-find items (which is important when there's no one there to help you.)

I loved their cute Pride display and left with some beautiful Juniper Moon Cumulus yarn. If they'd had more in the colorway I'd chosen, I would have bought more. I don't visit Half Moon Bay frequently, but if I find myself in the area again, I will definitely stop by.

I wasn't trying to lowball anyone or pressure the business into matching the online price--I was simply asking if they offered price matching. Unfortunately, the interaction took an unexpected turn. That's exactly why I asked the question instead of immediately buying it elsewhere. To his credit, he did apologize before we left, and I appreciate that. However, the initial response left a bad impression. Customer service matters just as much as pricing, and respectfully answering a simple question goes a long way. I truly wish the owner and the business the best, and I hope he finds healing and peace. I believe everyone has difficult days, but customers should still be treated with kindness and respect.
