Bare Woods & Home Furnishings is freaking awesome. Why? Their selection of wood furniture and home…read moreaccessories is excellent, and most items are customizable. Located in an unassuming corporate park, Bare Woods sells everything from desks to dining tables to bookcases to bedroom sets to rocking chairs--you name it, they got it. Despite the name, and the "Amish-syle" pieces referenced on their site, Bare Woods actually carries many more on-trend items, such as wood slab tables (pricier than other table options). I am pretty smitten with their ladder bookcase, Charleston bedroom set, and all their dining tables. Wood options include budget-friendly parawood and higher-quality and more expensive maple. Most of their products are unfinished and can be customized however your heart desires. However, colors and finishes depend on the manufacturer. If you like the distressed look, many items can be distressed to give them that aged look, which is so popular right now (and hopefully will be for a while...). Prices vary. Some items are very affordable (customized dining table without chairs for under $400). Other items are standard (about $800 for a finished chest). And as mentioned earlier, the wood slab tables are on the expensive end, but there's probably a good reason for it. Overall, Bare Woods is still much cheaper than some brand-name chains and fancy furniture stores. This is a no-frills, family-owned business. Don't expect HGTV displays. Everything is crammed together in a warehouse-like setting; however, the beautiful furniture speaks for itself, no need for gussying up. The service is also quite different from what you would encounter in a major retailer. The staff, probably all in the family, do not work for commission (they confirmed this) so they are never pushy and they aren't overly eager either. They pretty much leave you alone to explore and just tell them to come to them if you have questions. They're happy to assist you with just about any request. My hubby was hoping for a low-lying bookcase that could be used as a console, and one of the sales representatives provided us with a binder full of items fitting what he thought we were looking for. He also offered suggestions on other ways we could achieve that look. Delivery is $100 regardless of how much you spend. Alternatively, you can borrow someone's truck and pick up your buy(s) yourself.

Anyway...while he was at his appt., I decided to walk around the shopping center (FairLakes Promenade). I had seen Home Sense before but never got around to checking it out. Finally, got to do that today. At first glance, it looked like it was a furniture store. Yes, they have lots of furniture but a deeper look showed there was so much more. There are towels, bedding, kitchen utensils, household cleaning items, rugs and decorative items. My intention was just to look not buy. However, when I saw the food items, I realized that I needed a shopping cart. Things that caught my eye...imported pasta, pasta sauces, spices, sweets and a cleaning formulation for shower doors and mirrors. Truthfully, there were other items that attracted me but I exercised will power. For example, I saw a lovely vase but my sensible side said "we don't need another vase." There was artwork but sensible side said "We have enough of that and only so much wall space". When I went to check out, the cashier was friendly. I found out, when he tried to get me to sign up for a credit card, that they are part of a conglomerate that includes TJ Maxx. No, we don't need another credit card! My haul ended up costing $35 plus change. Once we were home, I showed my husband my haul. He asked what it cost and was pleasantly surprised. Aw, gee! I'm so proud of myself :D So, no regrets for paying Home Sense a visit!

When I checked out on my last trip, the young gentleman at the register kept yawning and barely acknowledged me -- it came across as lacking basic manners and customer service. To make matters worse, a picture frame I bought turned out to be damaged in the corner when I unwrapped it at home. When I brought it back to return, the sales associate spoke to me in an accusatory tone and insisted that I had damaged it. I explained that I discovered the damage only after opening the packaging, but she refused to accept the return. Thankfully, I asked to speak with the Manager, who checked my receipt, realized I had purchased it just the day before, and resolved the situation professionally. I appreciated the manager stepping in, but the interaction should never have escalated to that point. Glad it was ultimately corrected, but the sales associate definitely needs better training in communication, customer courtesy, and how to handle returns without blaming customers.

This is an update to my review regarding the damaged doors that OLW delivered to my home. First,…read morethe doors were really ugly doors. They were pieced together and the screws and rivets were randomly placed on the door. One door was so bent out of shape that it could not be installed. When I called Marshall he wanted to pick up the bent door and order another one to replace it. It would take another two months at least (from a Canadian company) to get. After looking at the (can I say it: crappy looking door), I decided that I did not want to wait to get another door. Marshall FIRMLY told me that I COULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES RETURN THE DOOR AND GET A REFUND FOR BOTH DOORS. He said that Sunspace never refunded money. So I called Sunspace in Canada, and they told me that the refund was the responsibility of the American distributor. I called Marshall back and he said again, NO WAY are you getting a refund from us. To make a long story short, I filed a complaint with the VA Attorney General, who then notified OLW about my complaint. I got my refund shortly thereafter, and I paid OLW for a pickup fee, and they picked up their door. I got two lovely doors from Home Depot, with inside blinds, for about $100.00 less than I had paid OLW. The doors from HD were well made and one piece instead of being pieced together with ugly screws. They fit perfectly on the first try.

As we were discussing where we should start looking, Home Goods came up in conversation. Thus, we agreed that since there was one in Herndon, that is where we'll start. Home Goods is one of those places that has an ever-changing selection of items. In other words, you may see an item you like but don't buy it then and there, it may not be there when you return. Upon entering the store, we looked around to get our bearings. I saw a sign for furniture and told my husband that lighting would probably be nearby. That turned out to be correct. They had about three or four aisles of lamps. Much to our surprise, we saw two matching lamps that we both liked. Since we had never shopped here before, I looked for a salesperson to ask how it all worked. Do we take the lamps to the register...or what? She followed me back to the lamps and unplugged them, then put them in our cart. Oh...okay. Now we know, if there's a next time. The cashier was friendly and efficient. So far, we're happy with the new lamps, and we were pleased with the price. We'll have to take the time to explore the whole store to see what else is available.
