I decided to try this salon after reading the reviews. Amanda cut my hair and boy did she do a fantastic job! I have crazy thick wavy Portuguese hair. Amanda was able to not only cut it to the style I was looking for but also thinned out perfectly! I went for a layered bob and it's by far the cutest (and shortest) style I've had yet! The owner, Lori, was super nice and personable. She made me feel extremely welcomed, even made me a cup of coffee. The salon itself was very clean and comfortable. I had such and amazing experience at Astoria Salon! This place is unlike many others in which the moment you walk in you automatically feel welcomed. I got my cut by Amanda who was so patient in understanding exactly what I wanted and executed it perfectly! I have no idea how this place got 5 star reviews (other than they are friends of the owner). Yes, the place is tiny, but does tiny have to mean dirty? See pictures. Also, when I called to book the owner told me to "bring snacks" because my stylist is impeccable so it takes her a long time. Well, I was there for almost 3.5 hours for a color with a few foils and I didn't even let her dry me! So what took so long you ask? Her cigarette breaks. One after another. And yes she thought washing her hands hid the smell but it did not. And did you read other reviews where people said they were happy that their stylist checked with the owner first to make sure their plan sounded right? That's not ok! I don't live in the area, so I relied on Yelp to find a hair salon in the neighborhood to do just a quick blow dry for a wedding I was in. Astoria Salon had great reviews and decided to try it out. When I got there, Lori suggested a simple updo instead of a blow dry since it was about 95 degrees out and the humidity was high. The updo came out fantastic; the employees were nothing but pleasant, efficient and quick and I felt like I had been going there for years. Astoria Salon is the best salon I have been to in Rhode Island. Lori is the owner, and she is my stylist. The salon isn't big, but it is definitely full of a lot of talented ladies, and they make their small space work well for them. They offer regular salon services and there is also a spa upstairs where they do facials, massages, and waxing. It has a very cheerful feel to it, and Lori made me feel like we had been friends for years at my very first appointment. She transformed me from boring, long frizzy hair, to a cute stylish trendy cut, which was very flattering. She listened to what I wanted, and then gave her opinion on what she thought would be better for me and my hair type. I have had several appointments with Lori and she is always consistent with her work, and her customer service and hospitality. She has even made time to cut my sons' hair and allowed them to help water her plants while she cut them as a distraction. They are difficult toddlers and she managed to get them to cooperate for their hair cuts. I truly believe there isn't anything Lori can't do. A+ for Astoria from me. read more

I had such a bad experience here. I asked for about 3 inches of length to be cut and for the wispy pieces in front to be trimmed as they had grown out. Ananda cut about 5 inches off, which I can work with but am not thrilled about. The front of my hair though is an absolute mess. It looks like I am growing out my bangs....but I never had bangs. My two thin wispy pieces I keep down when I throw my hair up are now very thick and blunt. They are also uneven and at a very unflattering length. I have never had a hair cut this bad. I would never recommend and would never go back. A huge waste of money and a huge regret trying this place out. read more

In January I went to get a balayage done. This was my first time getting my hair dyed. I showed them the first picture to give them an idea of what I wanted, and the second picture is what they did (taken at the hotel I was staying at not Astoria). It looked completely unnatural and not like balayage whatsoever. I have been to two salons since, both asked what was done to my hair. At the time o thought it was balayage but both said that what was done to my hair was not balayage and they didn't know what it was. I've since gotten my hair redone and the stylist told me that my hair was completely messed up from Astoria. I'd give a zero, but the people here are very nice and I'm sure their other services are good. read more

Oh i really wish i could remember the name of the staff who did my hair cut.. she's done a great job!!! (She's the one with bangs) she gave me a great hair cut and was very friendly. I'm not a great comversation starter so sometimes i get weirded out but i really loved how she tried to make conversation with me and tried to explain everything if i ask her about anything. Honestly it wasn't a planned visit, i was just around the area and my hair was just extra fizzy that day so i just yelped the place and walked right in. But i would say that it was a great spontaneous decision i made! Oh i really loved the way they massage your head when they are washing your hair.. all the products they use smells so great too!!-i think she said they are natural or organic products i can't exactly remember but anyways it did wonders to my hair and they weren't fizzy anymore :P oh, and smelled just so great :) I minused one star because the place was little tiny.. i just wish it was a little more spacious.. read more

I have had such bad luck with hair salons these past two years, but finally I struck gold. I gave them a very challenging hair dye project and they nailed it! No questions asked and no trying to change my mind. Amanda is a great colorist using a very fastidious method, but her attention to details paid off! I was able to squeeze into an appointment in a pinch, so that was very kind of them. When I arrived I didn't know what to expect but they greeted me so kindly. I felt like I went to a friend's house to get my hair done, that's how comfortable the owner and her staff made me feel. My hairstylist was fun and professional and really took the time to talk through what I wanted which I was grateful for. She took my recent hair loss into consideration and modified her dye formula so it didn't further damage my weak hair. I wrote in a request for an appointment yesterday and Lori (the owner) answered my message immediately offering me an appointment. I had let my roots grow out for way too long and I was in desperate need for some help. As soon as I walked in, I immediately understood all the other reviews that spoke about the "warming" and "welcoming" nature of the cute salon. Everyone I spoke to was kind and friendly. Lori immediately offered me a beverage and I felt right at home. Christina was my stylist and let me tell you, I have NEVER been so at ease with someone who was dying my hair before. She was so friendly and upbeat and easy to talk to. She listened to what I wanted and gave me better results than I could have even hoped for. She was attentive, understood what I was asking for, and worked with me for hours to get exactly what I wanted. This is the best my hair has ever looked. If you are looking for a new salon you NEED to go to Astoria. It will exceed all your expectations and is VERY reasonably priced (dare I say underpriced) for the quality of the service. My favorite hair salon in RI! Owner Lori is always warm, attentive, and professional. As a Bostonian, it's refreshing to come home and get a fabulous cut and color for under $100. After seeing many good reviews I went into this salon without an appointment and explained to the manager (who is amazing) what I wanted and I told her I didn't expect to go blonde in one day and everything like that. She said never say never and asked if I would wait for Amanda to come in and that she could do it (AMAZING BECAUSE I DIDNT MAKE AN APPOINTMENT) Amanda is great and I'll request her every time now.
