    Kindergarten

I have a third grader who absolutely loves this school, and we have been thrilled to find this gem in San Leandro. We are lucky to have 2 administrators per class (a Teacher and TA) and the staff is absolutely committed to making sure each child thrives. Not only is our son excelling in reading and in math, he is expressing a social conscience that goes beyond his years. We expected this school to excel in academics (you get what you pay for with a Catholic school education) but we did not expect the extra level of education that expresses kindness, compassion, leadership, and responsible citizenship in this dynamic and diverse community.

They completely ignored the signs of abuse I was enduring at home despite being mandated reporters. There was literally a day were one of the very incompetent school counselors brought in a cop who threatened to arrest me because I was experiencing suicidal thoughts and self harming tendencies, which also traumatized me into not being able to ask for/seek professional help. I constantly had to endure bullying because of my gender identity and despite being harrassed and physically assaulted, I was blamed for verbally defending myself. Even the principal at the time was absolutely incompetent, I was one second late to my class because I had dropped my pencil case and suddenly the vice principal drags me out of class to get yelled at with a bunch of other students for being tardy, this ended up making have a full meltdown. Yelling at someone, ESPECIALLY a child who is dealing with domestic abuse at home and has autism was so smart (obviously sarcasm). On top of all of that they gave me detention for being ONE second late. -100/10 I will never be sending my children here.

The teachers are great, especially the middle school teachers and 5th grade teacher who is also the VP. The teachers are responsive and address any questions I have. My 8th grader recently took the HSPT and interviewed with the Catholic HS of her choice. During the interview, the principal from the HS said she loves Saint Leander and all the kids that come from Saint Leander. It really is a close knit community full of diversity and respect for everyone. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, my kids finished the school year virtually. All teachers did a great job keeping them engaged. I took them out for the following year and enrolled them in public school. Both kids were much more advanced in reading, writing, math and science than their peers in public school. Once in person school was available both kids begged to return to Saint Leander. They are much happier to be back!

To be clear - I don't believe there are any perfect schools. As with any community of this size, there are many differing opinions, backgrounds, and goals. Constant conversation and compromise are needed. It is for this reason that I give St. Felicitas five stars. We have had many changes and challenges over the past ten years, and in our experience the staff here is wonderfully open to feedback and conversation, which have ultimately resulted in decisions that best benefit the school community as a whole. As with all families, we have experienced a few personal tragedies over the years, including loss of family members. I truly believe that the environment at this school helped my children to face these difficult times feeling supported and safe, and helped them to heal with a trusted community. Members of our staff have also experienced very difficult family losses recently. It was incredible to see how the school came together to support these teachers, through prayer, meal planning, and bringing their families together with our community to help them heal together. St. Felicitas provides a good balance of religion and academics. Students regular attend masses and prayer services, and perform community service, such as helping to host "Young at Heart" for the older members of our parish. In middle school, students are required to perform a minimum amount of community service as part of the curriculum. Parents are also expected to volunteer a certain amount of hours during the school year, which I believe is a benefit. Through this we have formed some amazing friendships with other parents as well as the staff, and as a result truly feel that our voice is heard. As with anything in life, you get back what you put in. This is a community that believes strongly in giving back. My older child is now a freshman at St. Joseph Notre Dame in Alameda. In her first week, she was moved up from Freshman to Sophomore math as she had already mastered algebra while at St. Felicitas. SJND is an academically rigorous school. Thanks to the education she received at St. Felicitas, my child is finishing up her freshman year with a 4.2 GPA. Four of her fellow graduates also moved on to SJND. In the first semester of their freshman year, all five were recognized with "high honors", which requires a GPA greater than 3.5. St. Felicitas is not a 'fancy private school'. It is a tight-knit Catholic community of very hard-working families. If you are looking for a school where your child will learn academically, develop spiritually, learn the value of hard work, and be well prepared to move on to high school, this is the choice for you.

For years, O'Dowd has prided itself on fostering a culture of equity, compassion, and community. Erasing symbols of visibility for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff actively damages that mission.  Sends a harmful message: High school is already a vulnerable time for teenagers. Stripping away visible markers of support tells LGBTQ+ youth that they are unwelcome, unseen, or that their identities must be hidden to fit an institutional mold.  Undermines community trust: Decisions made behind closed doors--seemingly under pressure from outside leadership--without meaningful input from parents, teachers, and students show a profound lack of transparency and respect for the school community.  Contradicts a progressive spirit: Oakland has a rich, proud history of diversity and advocacy. For a local institution to yield to exclusionary policies is embarrassing and alienating to the very families who choose O'Dowd for its supposed openness.  Inclusion isn't just a buzzword to put on a brochure; it requires actual visibility and protection for marginalized groups. By yielding to this policy, the administration is failing its students. Do better.

You have a variety of teachers and unfortunately at arroyo they are either great, outstanding professors or horrible new ones. Advise to all incoming freshmen and concerned families don't let the academies get to you. They are useless in college and yes they are a great help, but all you can gain are connections to great people. Academies are a great way to specify a career goal, but come on at 14? Do they know what they want probably not. Save that big decision for college and to be quite honest the academies are just a lazy system to keep students clustered and assigned to certain teachers to make it easier for scheduling purposes. Tad bit. Now to the teachers. As a recent graduate I recommended these teachers. As I have said you only get the outstanding or the complete newbies. Get these teachers before they retire! MR. IRONSIDE : One of the most genuine mathematicians on campus. He cares so much for you as a student and was one hell of a geometry teacher. MS. OSTRANDER : Take her class. Her teaching is outstanding and she is an amazing English teacher. You will fall in love with her class and her appreciated for the English subject. MR. VINCI AND MR. GUARINO : These two seriously are twins (not looks wise, but they are pretty much always together) Very different teaching style, but their love for the English language is great. Can I say these two will have you crackin. Now these are some of the great, sophisticated teachers on campus. There are plenty let me reassure you, but I haven't had the pleasure to experience all the great talents on campus due to academies. I'm academies you are pretty much assigned to a certain group of teachers. So I can only speak for the H&M academy! So to say. These classes I do not recommend. Sadly to say but these courses are just not worth your time. AP PSYCHOLOGY: This is a brand new course. And so to speak the teacher wasn't great and yes, it may be the first year teaching it. But you can't change teachers skills in a classroom. Don't blame the subject, blame the teacher for teaching the subject in a non passionate or effective way. With my experience with teachers and classes you can just tell. AP CALCULUS : My god was this a hard course! Ms. Mountain is a great teacher and don't let her size fool you this is a tough course. If you are not that strong in math do not take this course if you don't have too!! If you guys think I hate this course cos of my bad grade I did not I received a B. ANY ACADEMY CLASS : Save yourself some time they're not worth it at all on college and you don't need them. Haha they are seriously useless. Enjoy your time in high school. Make the best of it and be opened minded. As a recent graduate this is my take and what I received at Arroyo. Classes (cleanliness/student ratio) : 3/5 Teachers : Varies Spirit : 2/5 Athletics : 2/5 [Check your sports team ranking, but overall Arroyo isn't known for their outstanding sports program] Experience : 3/5

Well why get my hopes up or go through the process of all the paperwork and documents to be denied. This request was due to hardship and our business belongs to this school. Shirley called me a week later not to apologize but to repatriate that McKinley was full and to see what other school I would like. I returned her call within 15 minutes and to this day have not had a returned call back and this was last Wednesday. Within our first few weeks after transferring, my older high school brother was called the N-word by a fellow student. As middle schoolers, my other brother and I had to witness that, while constantly feeling a heavy, quiet hostility from parents who didn't want us to be friends with their kids just because we were among the few Black faces in the room. The students were mostly passive, but the constant microaggressions about my hair and the casual, stereotype-driven biases made it exhausting to just exist there. After George Floyd's murder, the school put on a performance of having conversations about American racism, but it felt empty--they did absolutely nothing to actually protect or support the few Black students they already had. I wouldn't wish the loneliness and anxiety of my time there on anyone. I am profoundly grateful to the few staff members who genuinely cared and tried to protect us after my brother was called a slur. But I fear nothing has truly changed, and I refuse to stay silent while another Black or minority student risks going through the same pain we did. I expect a response to this review, and I am entirely open to a direct dialogue with the superintendent to discuss how the school actually plans to fix this culture.
