I've been involved with this school about five years now, and it's great! Caring staff and wonderful children.

To be clear - I don't believe there are any perfect schools. As with any community of this size, there are many differing opinions, backgrounds, and goals. Constant conversation and compromise are needed. It is for this reason that I give St. Felicitas five stars. We have had many changes and challenges over the past ten years, and in our experience the staff here is wonderfully open to feedback and conversation, which have ultimately resulted in decisions that best benefit the school community as a whole. As with all families, we have experienced a few personal tragedies over the years, including loss of family members. I truly believe that the environment at this school helped my children to face these difficult times feeling supported and safe, and helped them to heal with a trusted community. Members of our staff have also experienced very difficult family losses recently. It was incredible to see how the school came together to support these teachers, through prayer, meal planning, and bringing their families together with our community to help them heal together. St. Felicitas provides a good balance of religion and academics. Students regular attend masses and prayer services, and perform community service, such as helping to host "Young at Heart" for the older members of our parish. In middle school, students are required to perform a minimum amount of community service as part of the curriculum. Parents are also expected to volunteer a certain amount of hours during the school year, which I believe is a benefit. Through this we have formed some amazing friendships with other parents as well as the staff, and as a result truly feel that our voice is heard. As with anything in life, you get back what you put in. This is a community that believes strongly in giving back. My older child is now a freshman at St. Joseph Notre Dame in Alameda. In her first week, she was moved up from Freshman to Sophomore math as she had already mastered algebra while at St. Felicitas. SJND is an academically rigorous school. Thanks to the education she received at St. Felicitas, my child is finishing up her freshman year with a 4.2 GPA. Four of her fellow graduates also moved on to SJND. In the first semester of their freshman year, all five were recognized with "high honors", which requires a GPA greater than 3.5. St. Felicitas is not a 'fancy private school'. It is a tight-knit Catholic community of very hard-working families. If you are looking for a school where your child will learn academically, develop spiritually, learn the value of hard work, and be well prepared to move on to high school, this is the choice for you.

The way in which they test (multiple corrections opportunities) and teach (use of calculators) is the opposite of what they do in university. O'Dowd is focused on the appearance of grades but the grades aren't real. They worry about what they can say about college acceptance rates and types of institutions students are accepted to but they don't actually prepare them for how to study for or take exams properly. It's not worth the cost for the outcome. Maybe if your child is interested in the liberal arts or some general finance degree it's fine. If their focus is to just play sports this might also be your spot. If your child is not a minority likely also fine. If you want them to go to one of the top schools in the nation and survive - this is not for your child. Counseling staff have outdated ideas and a relic leading them all. The school does not offer anything that supports essay writing at school or as part of an assignment as many other high schools of a similar position do. They do nothing that provides value. They provide a place for students to submit their college options (for their tracking nothing more) and provide zero coaching on applying. They do not offer support to those that are paying their wages and keeping the lights on. Look elsewhere. This is not worth the financial investment given the lack of genuine college preparation experienced here. Huge disappointment.

You have a variety of teachers and unfortunately at arroyo they are either great, outstanding professors or horrible new ones. Advise to all incoming freshmen and concerned families don't let the academies get to you. They are useless in college and yes they are a great help, but all you can gain are connections to great people. Academies are a great way to specify a career goal, but come on at 14? Do they know what they want probably not. Save that big decision for college and to be quite honest the academies are just a lazy system to keep students clustered and assigned to certain teachers to make it easier for scheduling purposes. Tad bit. Now to the teachers. As a recent graduate I recommended these teachers. As I have said you only get the outstanding or the complete newbies. Get these teachers before they retire! MR. IRONSIDE : One of the most genuine mathematicians on campus. He cares so much for you as a student and was one hell of a geometry teacher. MS. OSTRANDER : Take her class. Her teaching is outstanding and she is an amazing English teacher. You will fall in love with her class and her appreciated for the English subject. MR. VINCI AND MR. GUARINO : These two seriously are twins (not looks wise, but they are pretty much always together) Very different teaching style, but their love for the English language is great. Can I say these two will have you crackin. Now these are some of the great, sophisticated teachers on campus. There are plenty let me reassure you, but I haven't had the pleasure to experience all the great talents on campus due to academies. I'm academies you are pretty much assigned to a certain group of teachers. So I can only speak for the H&M academy! So to say. These classes I do not recommend. Sadly to say but these courses are just not worth your time. AP PSYCHOLOGY: This is a brand new course. And so to speak the teacher wasn't great and yes, it may be the first year teaching it. But you can't change teachers skills in a classroom. Don't blame the subject, blame the teacher for teaching the subject in a non passionate or effective way. With my experience with teachers and classes you can just tell. AP CALCULUS : My god was this a hard course! Ms. Mountain is a great teacher and don't let her size fool you this is a tough course. If you are not that strong in math do not take this course if you don't have too!! If you guys think I hate this course cos of my bad grade I did not I received a B. ANY ACADEMY CLASS : Save yourself some time they're not worth it at all on college and you don't need them. Haha they are seriously useless. Enjoy your time in high school. Make the best of it and be opened minded. As a recent graduate this is my take and what I received at Arroyo. Classes (cleanliness/student ratio) : 3/5 Teachers : Varies Spirit : 2/5 Athletics : 2/5 [Check your sports team ranking, but overall Arroyo isn't known for their outstanding sports program] Experience : 3/5

Now good thing I did on my part register my daughter for her school she is assigned to. Came the first week in August since school starts on August 16 to be informed "ooh we will be processing the applications next Monday. No call or email, then I had to personally once again go to this school district to inquire to now to told "Oh yea she was not accepted since we are packed". Well why get my hopes up or go through the process of all the paperwork and documents to be denied. This request was due to hardship and our business belongs to this school. Shirley called me a week later not to apologize but to repatriate that McKinley was full and to see what other school I would like. I returned her call within 15 minutes and to this day have not had a returned call back and this was last Wednesday. First they don't allow students to choose their science courses in 9 th grade , instead they require them to take in sequence ( physics, chemistry biology). Then the main science course teachers especially AP Physics and Chemistry honor don't know how to teach. Those teachers don't know how to help students to apply their knowledge and concepts to solve problems, and assign homework on regular basis to help students to reinforce what they learn. My kid and the entire class struggle and stress on these subjects. The administration staff don't care. Students have to watch YouTube to learn it themselves. What is the point of paying high tuition for the teachers can't teach and kids have to look for resources from YouTube themselves!! My kid also mentioned that most of the students in the class cheat but the teachers don't know because too busy in texting or they just don't care. After visiting other private schools, there are attributes that set this school apart. For example, the school provides electives that will get your child ahead of the current industry such as coding, 3D printing, etc. The school staff is very friendly and will answer any and all questions you may have. I would send several emails a day before registering my son with questions and received a response in most cases immediately or within an hour after sending. My son shadowed for two days and immediately wanted to enroll. The teachers are very attentive and partners with parents to ensure your child is successful. Every student is issued their own Chromebook and many of the lessons taught in the classroom is taught using the laptop. The school has a focus on technology and uses apps that shows grades and upcoming calendars to help students and parents manage assignments and exams. This is a school that I would consider thinking ahead of the curve and innovative which is needed as there is a lot of competition for jobs in the Bay Area. I believe this school will provide my child a foundation for success. The school provides college planning counselors that will meet with your child individually. The campus is a newer building which also made my decision to enroll my child even easier. If you are looking for a school for your child 6th-12th grade, you should consider Crosspoint Academy. The school has an Open House this Saturday, 2/4/17 from 10am to 2pm. It will be worth your time to visit.
