We found Assisting Hands when a California based family member conducted an extensive and thorough search of options to provide care for my wife's father. As my father in law is now approaching 102 (next month), the level of care is now essential and "round the clock". Trying to find reliable and kind in home health care support for aging parents is so difficult. Assisting Hands was the third company we worked with when my mother could no longer be at home alone. They weren't the cheapest company we used but they were by far the best and well worth the few extra dollars an hour for peace of mind. Though they do not guarantee coverage if a caregiver gets sick, they don't push someone who is sick to bring their germs in to your home (Yaye!) and they do their best to send a qualified replacement. One of our caregivers found that they had a flat tire before work and the company paid to Uber her to our house (no small distance). Who does that?! We had a critical health intervention issue for (2) aging parents and Assisting Hands stepped up to the plate immediately and effectively to mitigate the amount of time we were spending handling the health issues. There is a cost and benefit in working with the best in the caregiving business. However, we were fortunate to be arranged with the most effective and kind caregiver - probably in the 99% percentile for quality and support in San Diego County. Thanks to this particular caregiver we were introduced to, along with the attentive and responsive office and billing support - recovery from the health challenges were realized much more quickly than going with some of the caregivers one might find on-line. We had other support services which were and are helpful but we know if there are major surgical milestones to accomplish in the near future, we are confident that the care team at AH both in the office and in the field will be the first we call to support our extended family. The staff of Assisting Hands has been a blessing to me and my family. When my oldest daughter suggested companion care services, I was unsure of what to expect. I was 45 years old, a mom of a tween as well as teenager, a full time teacher, and recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of vasculitis. Despite my diagnosis, I wanted to maintain my independence and continue to work while taking care of my family and my medical needs. Karen, Kay, Linda, Lynette, and Georgette were just the blessing I needed for me and my children. They keep my house organized, clean, and a warm meal on the table. Karen is whiz at cleaning a house from top to bottom in no time flat and she's great at organizing. Kay is a steady calm spirit who provides me with support when my home feels chaotic or disorganized and I feel anxious. Linda is a wonderful cook, great companion, and she makes laugh until my sides hurt. Lynette is a jack of all trades and can even run over rattle snakes with her car while finding hot water leaks. Georgette will give your family meal and cleaning your home the same love and attention as your loved one might if you were under the weather. Their services and support have enabled me to rest when needed and know that there will be a warm meal for my children as well as a home environment that nurtures their mental health and well being despite my illness. Last, but not least, Jane, Tonya, and Helen are like the Tar Heels dream team when Jordan was on the team. From scheduling to billing and dropping off bundt cakes at my door for Christmas, these ladies keep my services consistent and at a high level quality while also maintaining rates below or competitive with those of the other service providers my family considered. I have continually asked , Jane and Nina to please stop switching my Dad's caregivers around. They continue to do so. When I first hired them he knew what was going on. But now, he hardly knows, my Dad is 101. So therefore, they continually switch the care givers schedule to suite their needs. He finally had a good fit; I wrote and said please do not switch it again. And here it is two weeks later and it is all switched around again. I understand he cannot verbally say who he wants, but I am there, stopping in often, and I can see how happy he is with certain caregivers. They read to him, have him color, talk with him and sit and eat meals with my Dad; this is so important, as well as keeping him safe and clean. I would not hire Assisting Hands for a client who verbally can not speak for themselves. read more

In response to Nina's reply to me - No misunderstanding at all. Clearly, the confusion is on your end. The last time I spoke with Barbara I told her the days/ times were not set in stone; we were flexible. She said great and she would have scheduling call me back. Instead of scheduling calling me back, I received an email from Barbara stating and I quote, 'your father needs caregivers with dementia background and knowledge, and we just don't have anyone that meets that criteria'. I'd be happy to provide you a copy of the email dated Monday, April 16, 2018 for you to review with personnel. I've attached copy of that email from your representative Barbara to me on 4/16/2018: No Michelle, I am so sorry but staffing just can't make this happen. Your dad really needs to have a caregiver with dementia background and knowledge, and we just don't have anyone that fits the criteria. I have a friend that owns an agency in Santee. Before I came into homecare, I referred to him a lot, and I called him and he has plenty of caregivers in your dad's area. At no point did she indicate this situation was beyond their scope. Several days later I was informed by representative that they DID NOT HAVE DEMENTIA CARE PERSONNEL and could not accommodate our needs. Our family is already under stress dealing with him as he wants to remain in home, and this service knowing what we are dealing with wasted our time. Shameful! read more

My mom moved in with my family about three months ago. When I first started looking for a home care agency I really only needed someone a few hours a week. My mom was so social with her friends and this was a huge adjustment to her. She went from playing cards with her friends several times a week to living with us. I needed a little bit of respite care and she needed a friend. In calling different agencies I quickly found that many agencies were high pressure and would only send out a caregiver for a minimum of 12 hours. They also made me feel guilty about how they needed to provide someone with a job and I would not find a quality person to fulfill the need of just a few hours a week. When I called Assisting Hands and spoke with Jennifer, I got a completely different feeling. She was warm and said "of course we can do that!" I definitely made the right decision in choosing Assisting Hands. This company is amazing. What I didn't know when I first called assisting hands was that in a few short weeks my mom would decline so rapidly that I needed care overnight and during the day. One of the very best things about this company is their interactive approach with the client. Every single time they send someone new they check with me in advance, give me their background, and call me afterwards to make sure it went ok. Sometimes within minutes of the caregiver leaving. They really want to match you up with a good fit and it is very important to them. Nina, the owner, even delivered my mom flowers and pastries for mother's day. The personal attention that they give is just amazing. Jane does all the scheduling and is very flexible about changes to our schedule and Jennifer still calls just to check on us. I really cannot say enough good things about Assisting Hands. It has been huge change for our family to go from a household with three kids and my husband to having my mom live with us and caregivers here almost round the clock and Assisting Hands has made that process very smooth. We found out on Thursday afternoon that my grandmother was approved for hospice and she would be discharged on Friday. I called a few agencies that say they would have to call me back to find out if they could start on Friday. I called Assisting Hands and they were able to start work Friday night. I was very pleased with everyone I worked with there including the staff and the caregivers. I was especially pleased with Mercy. She was absolutely wonderful and a godsend in our situation. My 88 year old grandma needed someone to help clean and straighten the house, occasionally drive her to the store, and occasionally cook some meals. Basic stuff, nothing crazy. I made this very clear when I talked to Assisting Hands initially, and they seemed nice and interested on the phone. However, with the person they sent out to her, there turned out to be a lot of red flags. The big one is that the company essentially refused to come out if they had to spend "more than 30% of our time on housekeeping" (exact words, per an email that was sent to me). During the first visit/interview, my grandma did talk mainly about things that needed to get done around the house, since that was foremost on her mind, but to refuse business if sometimes this type of work takes more than 30% of their time is more than a bit ridiculous to me. You'd think that a company called "Assisting Hands" would be exactly that -- people who are willing to lend a hand and help out in any way they can. On the contrary: there was LOTS of documentation and stipulations specifying what they would and would not do. Considering that the chores that needed to be done were ordinary ones, this surprised us. Another thing that bothered us is that the person who visited kept pushing my grandma to sign up for an 8 hour block, when we made it clear all along that we only were looking for someone to come out occasionally for 3 hours at a time (their minimum). This goes with another complaint that my grandma had: she didn't feel that she was being listened to; it was like the person from Assisting Hands arrived with their own agenda and objective. Another complaint is when they said they would call her back "within an hour" and then never did. Basically, our first impression wasn't good: their focus seemed to be on charging as much as they could by scheduling long blocks of time (whether we wanted it or not) and apparently do as little physical work as possible. It wasn't a good fit for us. read more

Beware! Hired this service for my ill mother in law. They showed up fine the first couple times. The next week the caregiver left early without our knowledge (we had returned from a doctor appt to find her gone). I called the company to ask for an explanation and to add another day to our twice a week schedule. The company said they would look into it and give me a call back. I didn't get any call back. Today the caregiver didn't show up at all. When my mother in law called, the company said "someone" had cancelled today's service. My mother in law is very ill with cancer and emphasized how important the visit was, that she would never have cancelled. Again the company said they would look into it, and get someone else there, and would call her back. Again, no one called. I had to cancel meetings to race over there and get her something to eat, since she couldn't get up. And while I was there, the regular caregiver showed up, 2 1/2 hours late, saying she had told the company she had her certification test that day and couldn't come. Apparently the company decided not to let us know, and then pretend the visit had been cancelled. We need somebody trustworthy and caring to help my mother while she goes through this horrific fight against cancer. Clearly this is not such a company. read more

I want to thank Sue of Assisting Hands Home Care for being there for me when I got out of the hospital after hip surgery. I needed help getting in and out of bed, dressing, getting meals, etc. for the first week and she was there for me which allowed my husband to go to work without worrying about my safety being at home by myself. Everyone I had contact with at Assisting Hands was so helpful and friendly from the intake coordinator to the billing person and the cost was very reasonable. My sister and her husband can now go to the store, go to the doctor's office, go for a walk or a drive, have their lunches made, sit down and talk to someone who cares, play scrabble, have their home cleaned, get their prescriptions refilled on time, and more. The most important recommendation I can make is to say that my sister and her husband are treated with dignity and respect and are cared for like "family."
